Severe burning in foot 14 days after ankle surgery

Qin had ankle ligament repair surgery after severe sprain.  Had surgery 14 days ago today.  Yesterday the cast was removed and got put in the attractive black ankle boot and told I could be weight baring.  Seemed things were going well and I walked with the aid of a crutch a little around house.  Well, I went to sleep around 11:30 pm.  I have tried in vain to sleep on my back and just can't so I prompt pillows up and layer on my side and elevated foot as best I could. Got woken up at 4:00 am with excruciat BURNING all over foot.  I tell you I've never felt pain like this before and that includes giving birth. It is now 5:45 am and I found this forum.  Has anyone experienced this severe burning after surgery?  I had a block during surgery Nd foot was numb for 48 hours and then it wore off I had some tingling and burning in my heel but that went away.  Now this burning started. I tell you Imwas in tears and I'm a person that usually can handle pain.  Please respond if anyone can enlighten me.

    Hi!

I broke my fibula january the 13, 2021 after a running accident, and had the op the day after. The doctor said that the op wen't fine, I got a metal plate with 6 screws. Everything seemed to be ok the first week, however, I felt there was some strange feeling in my toes, as if they were very sensitive to touches, but I thought that it was normal after the op.

However, 2 week post op, the hell broke loose, it started with that they removed the stitches. When they removed it, it felt like one stitch was actully hitting the nerve, because it was instantly firing a nerve pain down to my toes during the removal. The following days, the nerve pain just got worse, It started to feel like my toes was on fire. I had hard time to fall asleep and I tried to take my meds, but that didn't help. I woke up in the middle of the night and felt that my foot was litterly on fire.. (One thing that helped was to bend my toes backward, so I had a small rope attached to one of my toes so I could drag it once the pain started)

The 3 week post op, my mentality started to decline and I started to get depressed as I thought this was going to last the rest of my life.

I searched through the internet but couldn't find anyone else having these symptoms and burning pain like I had. Until I started searching for the symptoms in English (I live in Sweden), then I found this site, and that really gave me the strength and hope back!

I kept fighting the pain, and the pain finally started to declined 4 week post op. One toe after another, the pain went away. I also got Gabapentin from my doctor, but since I felt that things got better I never started to taking them.

Now I'm 10 weeks post op and the nerve pain has almost vanished. Like many other, to you who read this, keep on fighting and the pain will eventually go away!! It take time (yes I can confirm).

When I called my doctor and told him about my symptoms he only said that "yes this can happen but will eventually go away", but what really eased my mind and got my hope back was reading all of the stories here. So I hope my storie will help you who read this as well.

My plan is to get back to running next year! What doesen't kill you makes you stronger!

First, I'm sorry for your pain.

I'm also 2 weeks out from my foot surgery and experiencing a lot of buring pain that wasn't there before. I did have buring and tingling from day one (once the block wore off) but this has been much worse. My doctor put me on Gabapentin for nerve pain but it doesn't seem to help with this new burning. The only thing I've found that helps, though not for long is ice. I have an ice pack with a strap that wraps around my foot/cast. Using it gives me relief for a short time.

In know this is a very old thread.. But I see some recent posts, I am about three weeks out of surgery and am now in a proper cast, thought that dreadful burning was a thing of recent past when I had a splint that was quite loose. Now in proper cast and the burning is raging again. What really upsets me is not the burning although it is horrendous. Is that none of the professionals can tell me what it is... They said what it isn't which is nerve problems as I can feel where they touch. I'm curious to know if any of you poor guys dealing with this have actually been given a definitive answer to what is causing it. As for me it take the edge off if I know what is happening and why.

    Hello Jane!

I hope you see this message and can give me some guidances. I felt and broke my ankle 3 places, trimeollar fracture. My surgery was 2 week, came out with 1 plate and 8 screws. I had nerve block and barely have any kind of pain for the 1st week. However, things started to change after first week. I begin to feel constant burning, pinching and top of my foot. It feel like an electric shot start on of my foot and spreading upward my legs. It give chill and goose bump all over my body. The more I iced from the back of my knee the more burning it get.

It is painful and uncomfortable like 80% of the day. I went to see Dr for 2 week post op yesterday and he told me that the nerves were damage from is during surgery and it is normal. It could take between 6 month to year to feel better. He prescribed me Ganapetin for nerve pain. The med hasn't done anything for me yet.

I am totally in a melt down right now as worrying about my healing and dealing with this constant nerve pain. Can you please tell me my nerve will regenerate and I can to to help with this. He took off my splint and put me in a hard cash for 2 week.

I know I am still a early on my healing but this nerve pain came out of nowhere and it is killing me.

hello, I had surgery about 4 weeks ago on my ankle. I had ligament reconstruction. i haven't been in a lot of pain with my foot but last night i had my boot on and i got this rush of burning/numbness. It has been absolute agony. I have no idea why it is doing this. When i take my foot out of the boot though everything is fine and it stops hurting.

I need help or advice on what the cause is!!
