Severe burning in foot 14 days after ankle surgery

Qin had ankle ligament repair surgery after severe sprain.  Had surgery 14 days ago today.  Yesterday the cast was removed and got put in the attractive black ankle boot and told I could be weight baring.  Seemed things were going well and I walked with the aid of a crutch a little around house.  Well, I went to sleep around 11:30 pm.  I have tried in vain to sleep on my back and just can't so I prompt pillows up and layer on my side and elevated foot as best I could. Got woken up at 4:00 am with excruciat BURNING all over foot.  I tell you I've never felt pain like this before and that includes giving birth. It is now 5:45 am and I found this forum.  Has anyone experienced this severe burning after surgery?  I had a block during surgery Nd foot was numb for 48 hours and then it wore off I had some tingling and burning in my heel but that went away.  Now this burning started. I tell you Imwas in tears and I'm a person that usually can handle pain.  Please respond if anyone can enlighten me.

Hi its 11.30pm and I can't sleep. I am just over two weeks post ankle fracture op. I had 4 screws fitted in my ankle. My ankle is in a black support boot for 4 more weeks. Sometimes I get a pain in the front of my ankle and it feels fragile and around my ankle feels tight but when I feel the boot it's not pressing on my ankle it happens mainly at night or if I put it down off the pillows when I need to go to the bathroom. I feel sharp short pains too.I am non weight bearing on my left ankle. I am due a visit from a district nurse soon to change the dressing for the first time and to show me some exercises to do. I Just want someone to check it and say its doing OK. Never had a fracture before but the anxiety and worry I feel every time I feel a new pain or the tightness is terrible. I am early in my recovery and need to be positive but am scared honestly. My partner is at the side of me sound asleep but I am struggling to sleep. Some days I feel strong and I am handling it all well and others just crying and panicky. Not sure if this is normal but just trying to get through one day at a time and work my way to recovery I hope. I hope everyone is doing well with there recovery. Julie from the UK. ❤️

Hi there, im sorry you are going through this rough time. I HAD a huge surgery 3 months ago and everything u said u are experiencing is normal. THE nerve pain is what your feeling and it will get better. I HAD to take gabapentin and it has helped. i still have some but its getting better. I JUST started PT and its helping tremendously. I WAS in a cast 6 weeks and boot 4 weeks and still am in my boot. BUt im making strides. I had a hard time sleeping too but it all gets better. It takes a lot of time to heal from these surgeries. I WOULD see my husband sleep so good and i was in agony wide awake. But hold on it gets better. Praying for your speedy recovery. GOD bless you!

Thank you for your reassuring words they really helped me to know it was normal and not something going wrong with my ankle. I am so happy you are getting through this and that it gets better with time. Julie 🦋

I broke my tib/fib and have 3 plates and 20 screws. my after surgery is now one month. I was playing with my dog and he ran into me throwing me off balance. Broke ankle in 3 places. my biggest problem is my little toe is numb and also becomes painful. Three of my toes are closely together with one trying to overlap. My big toe and second toe have a gap and it feels like a thick string is between them. My foot has a lot of stiffness and of course nerve pain shooting randomly. i sm also having venous congestion. When i stand my foot turns blue and becomes numb. Elevating it immediately fixes It. is anyone else having this problem? It's supposed to correct itself and is normal.

You have no idea how happy I am to find your post. I am 9 days post op for ankle repair plates/screws etc for a dislocated Fibula, broken tibia, broken malleolus and torn tendons. What a mess.

Last night the top of said foot starting BURNING with a vengeance but if I touch it, its almost like a numb skin feeling and swollen. Oh man it hurts and like you I could not sleep. I am not one for meds and only took the Percocet for the first 6 days post op as it was bearable at that point; until now. Im glad to know its normal. How long did it last for you? Hoping you are feeling better now. 😃

sorry to hear you are in such pain. I hope you are feeling better and your pain is lessening. it is quite the journey isn't. I am now 10 weeks since ankle surgery and doctor told me to stop wearing my boot and start weight bearing. My ankle is still very swollen and stiff. I don't have the burning pain any more. But a constant ache now. And it is painful to walk. My doctor is going to refer me to physio therapy. I'm hopping it will help. Has anyone out there reading this gone through the same thing? I would love to know if this is normal after 10 weeks. 😔

what you described is exactly what i am feeling now, 2 weeks post ankle surgery. are you feeling normal now? how did you manage to get out of pain?

So sorry to read you are in so much pain. I finally looked up on google today and asked why I get a burning pain in my foot since an ankle replacement nearly 5 months ago. It is now and again, not all the time thank goodness but quite painful when it happens but not unbearable. I hope yours improves as time goes on x

    hi,

how did your pain go away finally, if it has?

Hi! First of all- you people are my people. The ones who get me when I say that this pain is like

no other. No one has understood - including myself- what the heck is this I'm going through post surgery . I am 15 days post op from a Lisfranc fracture (mid foot injury) surgery that required fusion with plates and wire to repair. Reading all of your comments has given me so much validation and piece of mind that this special ring of- you know where -is a place where I'm

not alone. I did pretty well the first 13 days- nerve blocks are my friend. Burning yes some- but manageable. Then, day 14 and my tune is a more dark tone with less hope. You all know the drill-

the burning, the sharp shooting pain like nails being driven through your foot. I'm here with you.

You are not burning alone. Thank you to those that shared there is hope and it will stop

and get better. This is something we need to hear ... because you become terrified that this is your new normal. Take heart fellow injured friends! We will

heal, we will make it, we will walk upright again.

Hey.. I'm a late comer here but I'm in agony. Had my trimalleolar surgery 4 days ago, and to my surprise doctor advised immediate weight bearing. i had a block as well, numb waist down. Took 3 days to get all my sensation back. My foot is on fire. I feel like I'm stepping on hot coal, even when I'm asleep. Anyone else advised to weight bear immediately? May I add that the pain when I try to walk is unexplainable. Even childbirth is a walk in the park! The meds dont seem to help much.

I'm so grateful to have found this discussion. I had a Broxom ligament repair nine days ago and last night started to experience the terrible burning pain you all speak of. I am only on Tynenol with codeine as most pain killers make me incredibly ill. Today has been unbearable, but I am finding ice seems to help. I ice for 15-20 min and it makes the pain bearable for up to an hour. If anyone has any other suggestions for how to relieve this pain I am eager to hear!

    Hello Jane,

I am sorry to hear of your post/op burning pain

I am going through the same thing now. i had a re-tear of my right peroneal tendon ( first surgery was 2017), re-do on 2/23 of this year. The burning pain always is at night when I am trying to sleep. during the day, no burning pain. I am alternating Motrin and Tylenol for discomfort. What do you take or what helps with that burning pain at night?
