Qin had ankle ligament repair surgery after severe sprain.  Had surgery 14 days ago today.  Yesterday the cast was removed and got put in the attractive black ankle boot and told I could be weight baring.  Seemed things were going well and I walked with the aid of a crutch a little around house.  Well, I went to sleep around 11:30 pm.  I have tried in vain to sleep on my back and just can't so I prompt pillows up and layer on my side and elevated foot as best I could. Got woken up at 4:00 am with excruciat BURNING all over foot.  I tell you I've never felt pain like this before and that includes giving birth. It is now 5:45 am and I found this forum.  Has anyone experienced this severe burning after surgery?  I had a block during surgery Nd foot was numb for 48 hours and then it wore off I had some tingling and burning in my heel but that went away.  Now this burning started. I tell you Imwas in tears and I'm a person that usually can handle pain.  Please respond if anyone can enlighten me.

Hi Jane , sorry for your pain, but I had surgery February 2016 my ligaments were torn off. I was told not to have weight for 7 weeks , thereafter I went to the physio but according to the doctors I should have had more sessions with the physio. After 12 weeks it only started to feel a very tiny bit better. I also had that burning and also seek answers on the net, that is why I am still today 11 months later still seeking for relieve. Keep your foot in the air and drink painkillers as prescribed, do not skip one.Go to the physio . Because of the pain I started to walk not correct and that had another effect on my foot. I did stretch exercises for my achilles to stretch. I also did water exercises, such as paddle with my feet.( i got the best result with that) . I have to wear soft shoes and if I were sandals or bare foot I sometimes just feel if I stepped on a needle as a sharp needle pain is coming from the bottom through my third toe. Its so sudden I sometimes yell . I am also constantly aware of my small toe and the one next to it. It does get better with time as days will pass withou anything and then just suddenly , something is sore again. If the burning continues please contact your doctor. They should have given you pills to keep you blood thin, please drink a lot of water fr this. This is more painful than giving birth. Good luck.

      Hi Suzy

I had surgery December 12 for ligament tendon cartilage micro fracture surgery. Last few nights my ankle is on fire! I can not handle anything touching it not even my ice machine which has been a god send. I'm going to dr for follow up so I will be getting more pain meds tomorrow.

Lynette...when did you have your surgery and how long did you have the nerve pain before it was diagnosed as central regional pain?  I have been in physio for almost five weeks but the burning, prickly, stinging pain is not really improving.  Right now I am taking Percocet at night just so I can sleep.

Hello i had this surgery on Nov 11, 2016 and I drat feeling pain 2 weeks after surgery which sucks. I went too see a neurologist and I went too pain management. I think pain management help me the most. He put me on lyrica. I am now starting physical therapy and was told it will eventually go away. But I'm up this early cuz my leg is sore from physical therapy. I still feel the hypersensitivity which drives me crazy. So I know exactly what u r going thru. I also use icy hot lidocaine or aspere cream too rub on my foot it does help some.

I'm up too. I have my ice machine going. I have my night splint on instead of the cam boot. I've been using coconut oil and lemon and pan away it's helping with the bruising

I found you at 3:18 in Alabama USA due to agonizing foot burning exactly two weeks post opp. I will request something for the nerve pain. I am happy I'm not alone.

Unfortunately my doc didn't give me anything for the nerve pain. I'm starting therapy tomorrow Friday. I'm in the states too in chicago. Be careful with those creams. With the sensitivity of the nerves you can actually burn your skin. Try soaking your ankle in a bath with Epsom salts if incision is closed and stitches sre out. And use coconut oil you can buy it at the supermarket it has vitamin e in it and will help diminish the scar.

I had surgery January 11, 2017 (2 days ago) to repair a fractured tibia and fibula. I had a nerve block done. Half of the feeling has come back but the rest has not. It feels like half of my leg and the top of my foot is asleep while also being numb. I CANNOT get comfortable. It hurts if it's down due to the rush of blood, but if I prop it up, it literally feels like my foot is on fire. There is no way I will be able to sleep with this pain 😫 I am only two days post op, so I'm still splinted and cannot remove anything. Does anyone have any advice?! I am going crazy. I don't know if I'm just being an anxious, nervous Nelly or what?!?

Are you icing through the splint? I suggest getting an ice machine. Stay ahead of the pain with the meds do not slack. I had a nerve block too. Stay off of it stay in bed my doc had me on two weeks bed rest and medicated and ice. They didn't put a compression sleeve on me after surgery my leg swelled really bad, I'm lucky I slipped on the ice and cracked the splint. Bed rest get a wedge stay off of it elevate ice and stay ahead of the pain with the meds.

keep the leg elevated at all times, only put it down when you absolutely have to and stay on top of the pain killers, take them when you're supposed to and don't skip any, you want to keep the pain under control by taking the medicine because once you miss medicine and it gets out of control then you're in trouble, that was the advice I was given by the nurse, the pain should start to get better in a few days, mine was better by the 4th day and I was able to stop the oxycodone and just do Tylenol but everyone is different.. I also had a nerve block and it took 2 days for numbness to go away so don't worry the numbness won't last forever.. also I would recommend taking a stool softener everyday because the painkillers bind you up badly

My doc had me on the stool softener I'm still on aspirin. also calcium plus vitamin d combo 3times a day. My heel is still numb but it will come back. Stay hydrated lots of water.

yeah I still have some weird numb spots on the top of my foot and I had bad nerve pain for awhile but it's a lot better now I didn't walk for six weeks after surgery so I was bedridden the whole time I kept my leg up 24/7 which sucked because it's hard for me to sleep on my back but I got used to it.. after maybe three weeks or so I was able to lay on my good side with pillows between my legs and it kept my leg propped up and I could sleep more comfortably for at least part of the night

The thing my therapist told me to do with the sensitivity is take different materials and rub gently on the spots and it's suppose to confuse the nerves.

Yes! that is so true Shari, I read that a PT said it will desensitize the nerves, they're firing up in all kinda crazy ways. I've been doing that, rubbing the areas on the bed and with my hand etc. and it has helped SO much even though it hurts. I also have someone massage the area once a day since its hard to reach and that helps a ton too.
