Severe burning in foot 14 days after ankle surgery

Qin had ankle ligament repair surgery after severe sprain. Had surgery 14 days ago today. Yesterday the cast was removed and got put in the attractive black ankle boot and told I could be weight baring. Seemed things were going well and I walked with the aid of a crutch a little around house. Well, I went to sleep around 11:30 pm. I have tried in vain to sleep on my back and just can't so I prompt pillows up and layer on my side and elevated foot as best I could. Got woken up at 4:00 am with excruciat BURNING all over foot. I tell you I've never felt pain like this before and that includes giving birth. It is now 5:45 am and I found this forum. Has anyone experienced this severe burning after surgery? I had a block during surgery Nd foot was numb for 48 hours and then it wore off I had some tingling and burning in my heel but that went away. Now this burning started. I tell you Imwas in tears and I'm a person that usually can handle pain. Please respond if anyone can enlighten me.

I have the burning pain in my heel. It's terrible. It just started yesterday out of nowhere. Sometimes it's not just burning pain, but I've also described it as someone hammering at a nail on top of my heel bone. It hurts worse than the other things that normally hurt, such as my broken bones! I will be asking the doctor about this. I am glad to know that it may not be something serious, and it may go away on its own. I will think positive. Love this website. Thanks guys!

Keep your head up it goes away. It's part of the process. Keep icing and elevating if you can! Elevating above your heart. You can buy a wedge on Amazon also crutch pads I've got them for the hands and top and a pouch to carry my stuff that attaches to the the crutch handle.

Hey rockin, I was told to put pressure on my foot in the boot at 7 weeks post op. I had weird pins and needles too and terrible pain, but my dr. had me fully weight bear. Anyway, those feelings go away in time, especially when you can fully weight bear in the boot and try to walk around everyday a bit. The more I walked around the better those feelings got but it took a while, probably a week for me. I'm about 5 weeks out from when I was told to weight bear in the boot and those feelings are gone when I walk so hang in there. Also, massage really helps.

Thank you beyond words for sharing your experience. It gives me encouragement. I really panicked with how bad it was and not knowing if it would be a permanent obstical. It caught me so off guard as that was the last place I expected to have pain and it was so intense. I am so happy for you that yours resolved and I am going to keep pushing thru until mine stops hurting. I am walking more and more each day and seeing progress which is the goal every day. Thank you again for taking the time to spread some hope.

Hey no problem I was scared a lot too through this whole ordeal so I understand completely. It takes a long time to heal from the bad injuries we suffered, I just did what I could and let my body and pain guide me.

Welcome to our crazy club!!! Make sure you are icing. Amazon has machines and also get a wedge it helps. But the burning is your nerves healing you can talk with the doc about lyrics or gabepentin. The other thing is take different textures of fabric and rub all over. It's not going to feel good at first, what it does is confuse the nerves. It will desensitize and help calm the burning. It's not immediate relief. It takes patience. Make sure you are taking your pain meds. Hope this helps.

Read your post, and it felt good knowing my post-surgical nerve woes are not unique. Some background: gracefully ;-) slipped on ice going to my car after work. Broken tibia, fibula, dislocated ankle, and blew out both sides of my ankle joint. 2 plates & 10 screws later, I left the hospital to recover at home. I had the pain blocker done for the surgery, but now I am beginning to wonder if the burning pain you describe is a side effect the of the pain blocker, or whether it is just part of the recovery?
