Severe groin pain pre-op

Hi all. For a few months I've had severe groin pain right n left but much worse in the left. I had probs on standing and had to lock my hip back into place before I could walk. Then I'd get a short sharp pain on turning and walking all of a sudden out of the blue so had hip steroid inj but pain in groin still there 9 days later. Thing is my consultant wants me to have THR right hip. I've severe arthritis. I'm worried if I have it then how will I cope with the left groin pain as the inj doesn't seem to have worked it may be the pain is coming from elsewhere. I also have bulging discs back L4/L5 and SI joint sacroilitis. I'm very restricted as to what I can do and am almost housebound. Ive had inj in the back and they have worked for a couple of months bit thats it. Due to see Consultant in 5 weeks. Any advice please?

my brother had severe groin pain prior to his THR and came out after with none.  I had no groin pain, my pain was joint and outside of the hip. Had my THRmon Sept. 9th and still healing. Hope this info helps ❤️

That's very helpful info. I'm discovering that groin pain is a classic hip prob symptom more and more. Wishing you all the very best and a speedy recovery. X

All my hip pain was in the groin and very little in the actual hip. Apparently this is where hip pain often appears. I had an injection in May and it improved but returned. I had my hip replaced 11 days ago no so far absolutely no groin pain. It used to catch if I twisted or moved the wrong wayway. People were beginning to comment because I couldn't hide the pain on my face. It is so good to be without that pain. Although the replacement is painful in its own way at least the pain is decreasing instead of increasing.

I would encourage you to have the surgery. Life sounds pretty miserable.

Wow your pre op groin pain is exactly as mine is now catches you unawares and I actually make a noise when it happens and stop in my tracks, so uncomfortable. Yes I think it's the best solution and great you had yours done. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Thanks Louise. I hope my experience can be helpful. Day 11 and I would say I actually have less pain now than pre op. It's a different pain and more achy but I have meds that cover it. So glad I took the plunge.

I think it's not just the pain, or the limited mobility but also the anxiety about surgery that all contribute to loss of lifestyle. The sooner we do it the less anxiety we have to endure.

Hip sufferers quite often have referred pain which can be in a number of places including the groin. I had so much pain in my knee that was convinced  I needed a knee replacement. Luckily my GP was aware of such things and ensured I had X-rays of both knee and hip, which showed bone on bone in hip. Post op not a twinge in the knee

    Dear Louise -

I am so sorry to hear that you are in so much pain ... I can relate to what you're experiencing ...

as said here, pain in groin is usually an indication that there is a problem with hips ... (I thought I had just pulled a muscle) -

I had pain on both sides and eventhough right hip showed bone-on-bone and left hip mild OA, my left hip felt nore painful and weak - so, like you, I was worried how it will be after I had Right Hip THR ....

first right hip THR was on March 16, 2015 ... felt great for weeks and then, sorry to say, my left side started to get painful again.

x-ray then showed bone on bone of left hip joint and had 2nd surgery September 10, 2015 -

I know, it doesn't sound so optimistic, but honestly, what a difference .. it will absolutely not get better -

it is a tough decision and nobody can really advise you except your consultant ...

good luck - I know you will make the right decision when the time is right.

    take care

    warm big hug

    Hi Louise,

I know what you mean - I have added so much weight due to declining energy and increasing pain ....it is emberassing .... I am a sensible eater, always have been ..

taking pain medication is not helping losing weight either , in my case ...

so, now both hips are done and I already can feel my energy coming back ... I want to enjoy these new hips for a long time and less weight would surely help...

not sure how I am gonna do it ... rolleyes

do what you can and don't use it to delay surgery (just saying)

    love

You are such an inspiration. Me too weight has defo increased due to meds, inactivity due to discomfort and feeling down. I must and will get rid of a stone at least prior to the op. it's bad enough I can see my flabby belly without anyone else having the displeasure. I'll defo go for it. X
