These severe inner thigh muscle spasms are so excruciating I can hardly stand

Well each time I had someone to help when they were severe. I have not tried Unisom. Others tout Aleve but that did NOTHING at all. I have 500mg Naproxen (industrial Ibuprofen) . Doesn't touch it. I also had Baclofen for back spasms also not effective at all. Hot pads did not help. For me, the ONLY assured effective method is direct pressure in the extreme.

Have you seen my post on magnesium glycinate? It has completely stopped them for me. Many Americans are low on it. I order mine online. This is what my NP said to do and she was right. Your Calcium may be low too.

Don't know why I bother responding to this question as the last time I did was a lot of GRIEF, but......  My primary care referred me to a physical therapist for my pelvic floor. I found that though parts were strong several muscles were not and I used the strong ones to compensate for the week ones. It accounted for other spasms as well. I will try to unfollow thread before the insults are hurled

Why on Earth would anyone insult you?  The only thing I see (and CERTAINLY not worthy of ANY negative comment) is that perhaps the spasms and cramps you were having are not quite the same as some of the rest of us. I do hope you have been able to get relief from the spasms. I apologize if someone was out of line in responding to you.

Usually everyone on here is just stating their problems with spasms. I haven't seen any harassing, but could have missed it. Sorry for anyone doing that to you. My core muscles are weak too, per the physical therapist, but these cramps are from nutritional deficiency in magnesium.

Please just try 1/2 unisom or a Benadryl at night. Nothing helped me except high heat which I keep near me all night long. Then I took a unisom and do every night. Stopped them cold -- no more inner thigh spasms.

If it keeps you spasm free for one year, it might be proof, otherwise still could be coincidence of timing in your case.

Has worked for months!  I got them several times a night. When I go off unisom, within 5-8 days they start again. Mayo Clinic has one research article discussing how sleep meds can stop severe spasms.

Like to see the Mayo Clinic reference please if you don't mind. Unisom seems safe enough to use regularly from what I can see.

Being an MD who also gets excruciating inner thigh cramps, I would like to comment on this.

    (a) I have had them intermittently for years--they are brutal, I leap out of bed, cannot walk and desperately try to ease it off. If my wife can get a hot pad heated in the microwave, she rushes off to do that, this does help but in the meantime I am sweating and nauseated and exhausted after 3 minutes

    (b) No the medical profession has no real idea what causes it--post exercise contraction, electrolyte issues Mg etc, all unproven ideas. Drinking something from the fridge to stop it sounds more like you don't have the same thing--I could not move to the fridge and also the absorption time would not give instant results (likely).

    (c) Overheating and dehydration do seem to contribute in my case.

    (d) Bear in mind you can go months in between attacks and if some magic potion has been taken before a quiet spell it does not mean that the potion (vitamin or whatever) was the cure. They may still return, I hope not, but I have not seen a consistent reproducible cure.

    (e) Being in the middle of 3 days of an inner thigh on and off one right now I am going to start some stretching exercises again--I had been working in the yard during the day this attack started. I am also going for a massage later today.

Condolences to all fellow sufferers that we do not understand this condition and yes it is really painful, I have had chest tubes in and out that were nothing compared to this.

I'm 62 years old and my excruciating leg cramps began about 3 years ago. Most of the time both of my thighs seize-up at the same time when I'm sleeping on my right side and after I raise my knees up to roll over. The cramps hit so fast, so hard, that I'm immediately awake and screaming. I'm an American, living in India for the past 6 years. Having said that, the difference is that I sweat now...a lot. I used to comment that 'I don't sweat'...that was in America where everywhere was air conditioned. I'm fairly positive that my excessive sweating is related to the leg cramps.

Some information: My diet is very well balanced here with plenty of a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, legumes, beans, little protein (no red meat, mainly eggs, chicken and fish), lots of yogurt and no prepackaged / processed foods. I'm fairly busy for a good 6 - 7 hours per day with much of my activity being outside and on my feet. So I get plenty of sun exposure and fresh air. I'm not on any prescribed medications, but do need to take Imitrex occasionally for migraines. I had a complete hysterectomy in 2001 (calcium deficiency attributing to the cramping?)  I do suffer from RSD, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, since 2003, but don't feel that it has anything to do with the spasms.

I noticed that some commented that the cramping / muscle spasms are not only in the legs. Same here. Whereas I experience the 'death-wish' leg and thigh cramps (oftentimes behind my knees) only at night, I have daytime cramps at my rib cage and lower abdomen.

When we moved to a very humid, hot area..with no Air Conditioning..in 2014, that is when I had my first horrifying episode of both thighs cramping at the same time. I was alone...my husband had gone out of town. Once the cramping and pain passed, I got up and began to question what was different. I thought of the extreme sweating and got my Electrolyte drink, that I keep on hand for when severe diarrhea may hit, and mixed a small amount in about 4 ounces of water and eventually laid back down and went to sleep. The next night, the cramps hit again. My husband is a Deep Sea Diver and he'll jump up and come over to maneuver my feet and legs to try to relieve the cramps...sometimes it helps, other times I can't tolerate the manipulation at all.

I continue to sweat excessively and I continue to have the leg cramps occasionally (as many here have mentioned, there is no pain compared to this type of pain, and I've had my share of severe pain).

I'm going to begin keeping a diary of what I eat and drink every day. Perhaps I will notice a pattern of what may trigger these debilitating cramps.

Every body is different and what helps one may not work at all for others. But by sharing the symptoms and the methods of relief found, it may help one person avoid the nightmare of these types of cramps, and eventually we may find a common denominator that will help all of us sufferers! So keep sharing...I look forward to reading more posts.

The Benadryl does nothing for/to me except make me really drowsy. I am already on Baclofen for spasms, Porphine, Dilaudid and Naproxen. Nothing has ever helped except the pressure treatment with the Ace bandages.

Sounds crazy but Ryan to swallow a tablespoon of yellow mustard when you feel the twinge begin. In minutes the pain is gone. Let me know if it works for you. I carry mustard packs in my purse just in case of an attack

omg you've describe this so perfectly! Yes this pain is from the pits of hell worst than childbirth!!! I've learned heat does help. I keep muscle cream n heating pad at bedside. My episode tonight was minimal. I worked yesterday 12yrs a lot of walking (in the hospital) and I have back issues. Think I'm starting to piece the puzzle.... And yes ur right I've gone months thank God!! But it still comes back time to time. I just really pray this never happens in public or while driving!!
