My solution is to take 2 6" Ace bandages and apply extreme pressure onto the muscle. Take one tightly rolled Ace bandage ( still in the factory wrapping is ideal) press it lengthwise along the cramping muscle and hold it there. Have someone wrap the second Ace bandage around the thigh TIGHTLY , pulling the bandage extremely snug to push the rolled bandage firmly into the cramping muscle. When I saw TIGHT, I do mean tight. It should begin to immediately release. Once the major cramp has released, loosen the outer wrap a LITTLE, maintaining a very firm pressure on the rolled up bandage against the muscle.
Leave this in place until the twinges of the cramp are completely gone. It should take about twenty minutes. This will NOT cut off circulation to the leg. This has worked for me quite well over the last ten years.

I'm just now stumbling onto this thread about muscle cramps because I am laying in bed trying to prevent them from happening in both legs in the groin area. I'm drinking Gatorade and eating mustard but it's not making it ease up. I have read several comments and I can say that for me cortisone in any form causes severe muscle cramps in any part of my body for three or four months after I have had it. I thought it was just injections but it is also oral cortisone. I don't know if the cramps I am having now was caused from the oral cortisone I was given two months ago or if this is caused from something else that I'm unaware of. I cannot imagine having to live with this and not be able to do anything about it. Just shoot me!

Mustard won't help these spasms. Please try half of a unisom at bedtime. I tried every single suggestion and then stumbled on unisom thru a Mayo Clinic article. Stops them completely.

Thanks, I'll have to check and see if I can take that with the pain medications that I'm already on.

I had two nurses do this for me in my last hospital stay. It worked beautifully.
I wish you all the best. I KNOW what kind of pain this causes and it is NOT fun or easy to ignore.

I would have to come up with something different because I am home alone. Maybe something very heavy to set in the groin area? Mine has eased up but I am being very careful how I move throughout the day, plus I stay very well hydrated now. I don't know what brought this on, I hope it's only temporary.

Statins cause these horrible cramps, I'm almost positive. My neurologist took me off lisinopril for a month . I'ts been three weeks now and I haven't had a cramp yet. I'm praying this is the solution. I've been suffering from these cramps for years and they come on so fast and I can't move . I can only scream. My kids would run and get the ice pak, heating pad, massager and the mustard. The cramps would go away in about 8 to 10 minutes. I hope the problem is the lisinopril. It's so nice to lay on the couch and not worry if I'm putting my legs in the wrong position.

I have been researching these cramps for months and talking to several doctors. To date, there is NO definitive proof as to the cause. Most information is anecdotal at best. Most of us have presumed causes or triggers but they are all different, so a definitive trigger so far, is still eluding both us as sufferers and clinicians.
I have tried many of the so called 'cures' all to no avail.
So far the only measurable success I have had is in getting the cramps to stop AFTER the initial 'attack'. As I mentioned in a previous response, my method is major compression of the thigh using two large Ace bandages- one still rolled tightly,and the second used to wrap around the thigh very tightly, holding the still rolled bandage length-wise against the offending muscle forcing it deep into the various muscles. The wrapping must be very tight- MUCH tighter than a traditional "support" style of wrapping. Tight enough to be uncomfortable.
The pressure on the muscle will shortly cause the muscle to relax. Once the cramp pain is gone, DO NOT REMOVE THE BANDAGE for at least 5 more minutes to avoid a possible retrigger. Once the bandage itself begins to be very uncomfortable AND the cramps are gone, remove the bandages.

I wonder if you could try it in something else such as benydryl? Maybe check with your doctor . It's the part of the med that helps you get dozy that also can prevent spasms . I hope this works out for you soon. I was so desperate as I was having them constantly thru night; I get how awful it is.

I'll ask my Dr. what I can take. I took 1/2 of a benadryl once and it knocked me out for hours, could not wake up. Im the same with muscle relaxers. I have to be very careful with medications because if there's a side effect of one in a million I'm going to be that one. I tell Dr's this and they ignore it and then I'm the one that has to suffer the consequences. Thank you for the information though. I wonder what the connection is that makes it work for the spasms. As soon as I get a chance I'm going to get on here and post my information to see if anybody has anything in common to me. I do know that sitting too long will trigger it.

Numerous times I've tried mustard (straight from the bottle), dill pickle juice, Ivory soap at the foot of the bed, Irish Spring soap at the foot of the bed and none of it does anything to help. I'm taking Cal/Mag, B complex, Magnesium citrate, D3 and something is helping. I'm no longer afraid to move a muscle. I am very cautious with every move I make and I can tell when my muscles are twitching a lot that I have to be even more careful. The cal/mag I think is what is helping the most because I skipped it for 2 days and the twitching started coming back. I also take the powdered Magnesium at night, a very heavy dose and that alone was not helping as much. It sounds like the cause might be different for each one of us. I'm glad you found something that works for you. My cramps started when I received cortisone shots. They would last a few months and then almost completely go away until I got another Cortisone shot. I stopped getting the shots and the doctor convinced me to try the oral cortisone so I did. The fourth pill I took I had a groin/thigh cramp, I stopped taking the cortisone immediately but the cramps have never gone away this time, that's been since July. Two doctors that prescribed cortisone shots said they've never heard of cortisone causing cramps.
