These severe inner thigh muscle spasms are so excruciating I can hardly stand

I forgot to say that I get a twinge when the spasm is about to come on, if I'm awake, that is. I stand up and start pressing down on my thigh. I also use a rolling pin, down the front of my thigh. Not up and not a lot of pressure. After the spasm, I have what I call a "shadow" of the pain until all this goes away. The pain is beyond the pain of a cramp. Like labor pains are pains, not cramps. I resented my doctor calling the pain cramping. She just never experienced this. Oops, she's a Nurse Practioner, not the doctor, but still! She's otherwise been very good for me with all other issues.

Yes, I agree, anyone who has never had these god awful muscle spasms could not even in their wildest dreams imagine the kind of pain they bring.I just wish I could pass out when they happen, & it wouldn't do any good to go to an emergency room, they wouldn't know what they are, what causes them or even what to do about them.I have found out since entering into this public chat that tons of people have these, we just need the right person to figure out what exactly causes them & what exactly can quickly get rid of them, or better yet keep them from happening at all.Thank you for your comments, I pray that all of us can find relief of these nightmare spasms. Take care.

I went into my search engine and put unexplained spasms because I was certain I wasn't the only one. I have been in so much pain for 3 years. Have been near death many times. The doctors knew I was dying but couldn't figure it out. While I can't really explain how I figured it out, I think I CAN tell you what is causing it and how to get better. You even eluded to it in your statement. Btw I am in the USA and they cannot figure any of this out either. My spasms are not however limited to my inner thigh. They are in my calves and feet, shoulder, arms and hands. I have literally passed out from them. They have stuck needles in the spasm to try to get them to release to no avail. I tell you this so you understand these aren't just charley horse kind of spasms. This week is the first time I have gotten out of pain in over 3 years. Now I'm not completely out but it's obvious I have turned the corner.

It is your KIDNEYS!!!! I have had this on and off since I was 5 years old and I am 54 now. It is stolen my life more times than I can count and I always give myself up to die, after 6 months of being in bed I would slowly crawl out and start over. I was determined this time to figure it out.

What to do....I have an appointment with a nephrologist but I suspect they won't find anything. I have done everything holistic since they don't Help. Look on the internet for a KIDNEY DIET. My massage therapist looked in her book and it said to juice beets and sip all day (teaspoon every 5 minutes). Too much makes you ill. I tried that and just couldn't do it. Desperate I tried again the next week but added a quart of water and the juice of a lemon and a tad of sugar (still nasty) but I drank it like medicine and managed to get it down in an hour. Her book showed to also eat pears. I am on my second day of pears. However I started the kidney diet 2 weeks ago. It calls for seafood, watermelon and other things. I have eaten 1 1/2 cups of watermelon per day since I started. Today I was able to stretch out a vertebra that has been out for several years from spasms. I'm adjusting but today I am better by 80%. I had kidney stones 20 years ago. Currently I have none, but when I had them check the function, test came back showing my kidneys were not filtering adequately. They don't understand how much pain so I looked up the holistic route. I had other symptoms too but all of them are so much better after 2 weeks.

Obviously I can't say this is definitely your issue but since you said you had stones, you know something's not right there. I'm jumping out of my skin and have cried all day because I thought I would never get to the bottom of it. Please understand doctors will tell you you are crazy. Just try the diet for a month, see if you get better

I don't have and never have had kidney stones, but I believe it has something to do with not getting enough water intake.Thank you for commenting & I wish you all the luck in finding your cure

All is well. I just thot that upon finally getting answers someone would appreciate finding. Water intake has a lot to do with kidneys too. By all means it can be vitamin deficiency. I never imagined kidney. I don't have stones but my creatinine was high which confirmed kidney. The kidney diet is simple and doesn't eliminate much. Just some things that feed the kidneys. Good luck to you find your answers

I also get severe leg cramps, and lately they have been accompanied by

Dizziness. I have tried leg cramp pills as well as magnesium. The leg

Pills seem to help the most. I usually buy them on Amazon or at

Walmart. My MD just tells me to drink more water....

I used to buy the leg cramp pills at Walmart but they changed them & took the quinine out of them.Someone said to make sure you stretch your legs out straight before getting out of bed, I found that helps somewhat.I seriously believe the main culprit is not enough water.I really didn't drink much water for a couple days & I've had the bad spasms off & on for 2 days. All I know is the spasms are excruciating! Anyone who has never had them could not even imagine the pain. Thanks for your input, I wish you all the best.

I found something that stopped my nighttime thigh spasms!  I started taking half a unisom for a sleep issue.... and my spasms stopped!!  This is after ages of trying so many suggestions. I was having spasms start up all night long. Three nights in a row... I HAVE SLEPT!

Firstly, all fellow thigh cramp sufferers have my absolute sympathy.  Only someone who has experience of this knows how excruciating the pain is.  I thought I was having a heart attack the first time it happened to me, both thighs in the middle of the night.  However, I find Osteocare Liquid Original containing calcium, magnesium, vitamin D and zinc provides me with instant relief.  Also worth a mention if you attend spin classes, I'd suggest giving the 'legs only, keeping upper body still' a miss.  I learned the hard way that this causes me to have an episode.  Good luck to you all and I hope this bit of info is helpful to someone.

I had the first episode of these cramps about 14 years ago. The latest one was while I was in the hospital last week dealing with a major reaction to Sucralose after drinking too many bottles of flavored water. I was laying in bed sleeping when it hit. As with everyone else, the pain is excruciating. I found a fairly fast solution.

By putting a lot of pressure directly on the cramped muscle and holding it there, the cramp will quickly dissipate. My solution is this. Take two wide Ace bandages and leave on rolled up tight. place it lengthwise directly over the cramping muscle. Take the second Ace bandage and wrap it as tightly as you can ( or have someone help you) over the rolled up bandage to force it into the cramped muscle. I definitely mean TIGHT. It won't take too long for the cramp to be released. Once the cramp is gone, LOOSEN the outer Ace bandage a LITTLE but still keep it snug. Leave it in place for a 1/2 hour to make sure the muscles are relaxed. This has worked every time I had a repeat of these cramps.

In this case I hit the nurse call button and stood until they FINALLY answered. They did as I said and she wrapped the leg. Even the nurse learned something that day. This relief is MUCH faster that any oral med or tonic water.I know keep a set of Ace bandages close at hand all the time.

Thank you for this information I will try it. I wonder what could be the common denominator in all our cramps. I only get the cramps in the evening after I get home from work and have been sitting a while, or during the night. It is always when my legs are elevated. There has to be something that we all are doing, (or not doing,) that is causing this. It should be researched since so many people are suffering from this. I wish there were some way to do a questionnaire on here to see if we can figure this painful situation out. Any ideas?

No doctor I have asked has any definitive clue as to why. These are much more painful than a typical charlie horse IMO.  in my case they happen when I am laying down and usually stat slowly and then get VERY painful very fast. I have noticed they occur if I stretch my legs and feet fully or if I have my legs bent but relaxed in a fetal position on my side. They are not related to any recent exercise or strain.

One "solution" I have heard about seems too silly to work. Some folks claim that putting a bar of Irish Spring soap between the sheets close you feet or legs somehow prevents the cramps. I have no idea why it is supposed only that brand. I am still researching the supposed causes and if I find anything of clinical importance, I will DEFINITELY post it.

Let me know if the Ace bandage trick works for you.

My NP told me its a magnesium deficiency. I order magnesium glycinate online and take it regularly. It cannot be seen in blood test, so it's often missed. If I forget for several days, I take some the first time I feel that little twinge, and I never have the cramp. It's a lifesaver!! I'm thinking Unison is magnesium because it also helps with sleep. My sleep is better to!!
