My doctor told me the inner thigh cramps are due to an electrolyte imbalance. I googled this and everything I read matched my situations. I began paying attention to when I was getting them and deduced it was when I didn't follow my fluid intake regimen. Water is not the solution as it does not replenish sodium or electrolytes. Since I have an issue releasing fluids, I take a diuretic. Without a proper balance with what I am loosing with the fluids....cramps. I started drinking Gatorade as well as water and the cramps have tremendously reduced in occurrence! Since it does contain sugar, I drink the reduced sugar ones. As soon as I'm off my regimen, the cramps return. I usually apply the heating pad, but recently used a bag of ice (along with eating salt on a sour pickle-not healthy, but it works for me to replace the sodium). This worked quicker than the heating pad. I also carry a roll on container of icy hot in my purse everywhere I go, just in case. It also works great when rubbed directly on the cramp!!!! I haven't tried the Theraworks, but definitely going to research the product! Please talk to your doctor about the electrolyte imbalance component. I would like to know their take in it.

Magneseum tablets and Theraworx are what works for me!

Hi, I like your idea about carrying a roll-on container of Icy Hot.

Did your physician order blood tests for you?

Yes, she ran bloodwork but I was there for another reason as well and I don't remember if she ran the bloodwork for the cramps or not. Also, a couple other people mentioned using a heating pad at bedtime. I do that as well and it seems to help relax the muscles. I can actually feel them twitching and relaxing. However, overall, the Gatorade has worked miracles!

I'm glad to hear when someone had found something that works for them. By you having an electrolyte &sodium imbalance it makes sense that the Gatorade would work, but for me the increase in daily water intake helped (for a while). Time to boost up my intake again, sigh.

You can drink tonic water. On the bottle it says with quinine. That's what older people do. They drink lots of tonic water for the quinine

I will definitely try this. I usually use my fist and push into the muscle but I am so afaid to move when it happens. Do you know what causes this to happen? I cannot pinpoint what I am doing

If you are in the United States I use theraworx. It's fabulous and has saved my life.

I've suffered from the same excruciating pain for a couple years also. The only thing that has worked for me for immediate relief has been salt. I'll eat a pinch or a few pinches, immeditely when I feel the twinge and normally within seconds to a minute or so, the pain and spasm will cease. However, the soreness from having the spasm does linger on for days after. In addition, I've started taking eloctrolyte pills about six months ago. This has been a life saver. Since then, I've only experienced the spasms 3 of 4 times where before it was a few times a month depending on my activity.

Iagree with your explanation of the excruciating pain...mine are so severe that I literally scream like a wounded seal, and my wife immediately goes into "panic ops"...but I must say, the two things that get me through within a few minutes is warm salt water and my cyclobenzaprine muscle relaxer for my chronic back pain athritis and muscle spasm... but only my inner thigh spasm occur at night in bed.

I have been having severe night leg cramps for as long as I can remember in my teens I'm now 51 and I can honestly say Ito one of the most excruciating pain I have felt. it always occurs when I'm sound asleep and lasts anything from 5 minutes upward though it's always seems longer. it has me in tears everything I can bearly move or walk and as the pain is so bad don't have the energy to get hot or cold compresses or stretching like I have read. no matter whether my legs are stretched out or bent makes no difference at all.

it has been a good year that I can recall that it has happened but took an early nap tonight as wasnt feeling 100% and BAM out of the blue I was woken out of my sleep with severe pain.

this forum is the first that I have actual seen solutions that have helped and I'm hoping that trying them will finally help softer all these years of pain.

I started taking "Solgar" brand 1000 mg Calcium with 400 mg Magnesium per day and a large dose of Magnesium "Calm" at night before bed. I haven't had any inner thigh cramps since I started this a few months ago. If I skip a day my muscles will start twitching and when that happens it's just a matter of time before I get the IT cramps.

Hi, I have cramping in both feet at night. When I start to fall asleep and my feet relax they curl and cramp. I sleep badly anyway so this makes it worse. Each time I turn over (which is a lot) my feet both cramp up and I have to sit up and stretch my toes out. Tried soap under mattress lol and putting corks under - which did nothing. I have not yet tried quinnine in tonic water although I believe the docs can give quinnine for this.

What I found was as above post and a supplement. I now take liquid calcium with added magnesium and Vit D all in one twice a day and it seems to have stopped it. If I forget one day it comes back. Worth a go.

I totally understand! I take a magneseum suppliment and that helps alot. If you live in the United States, you might want to try a product called Theraworx. You rub it on before the cramp even starts. Works like a charm for me. Hoping you get some relief. It's a horrible pain, we all understand!

Theraworx is wonderful. It does the job. You can get it now at some drug stores, but I got mine from Amazon. I also went to my doctor and got tested for low magnesium and other tests. All came back just fine. Just recently, I got diagnosed with Restless Leg Syndrome which has been bothering me for a few years. The medication she put me on helps that but also the muscle spasms so I am thinking that all along the muscle spasms were directly related to the Restless Leg Syndrome.

I was also tested and everything came back just fine. A friend of mine had the restless leg syndrome and started taking magnesium and it went away. I take the Solgar calcium and magnesium daily and as long as I do that I'm fine.
