These severe inner thigh muscle spasms are so excruciating I can hardly stand

    Thank you for tht advice. I will try that the net time. What do you mean "lie a frog", and which direction do you push the thigh muscle...out, in, irfurther apart? Thank you!

    its hard to do because of the muscle cramp. but you sort of slightly squat ( from standing up.. pushing both knees and thighs outwards ( like frogs legs). The thigh that is actually cramping needs to be pushed or pulled further outwards with your hand ...as far as you can...to stop the cramp from further tightening. I managed to hold it for a couple of endless minutes then the cramp just melted. Good Luck

      I am going to try that but of course only when the spasm is on one leg. It is not uncommon that the spasms come in twos in which case I am immobile practically!

      What really terrifies me is what will happen if I get a spasm while driving! I always jump to a standing position as soon as I feel a spasm starting. Can't easily do that while on a high speed road or regular busy street especially at night or with inclement weather. this can easily become disastrous. Seriously need to focus on finding a consistent preventative solution.

      I have had that happen many times while I was driving and all there is to do is grab your inner thigh firmly and then squeeze. that will give you at least 50 percent relief.

    Hi ehunter,

    Thank you for both of your posts. I have not gotten those cramps for a few months, They originally started when I stretched out my leg on the bed, kind of kicking my right leg, with the weight of my sneaker on it. That day, they immediateIy started. I was then getting them a few times a day, and felt like I was dying, they were so painful and lasted, each time for an hour or longer. They were so painful I felt like I would pass out, and did not know what to do. I also noticed I got them when I was wearing really tight pants, and also, I was overheated and my body was hot. However, I still think it was from kicking my leg out like that, on the bed, and thought I had strained my groin, I am still not sure, though. I could not even find the location of the cramp, but it was my right upper leg...could even have been the abductor. I just don't know, but I am so grateful they are gone that I am too afraid to do any exercise, stretching them. However, if they start again I will definitely do those froggy exercises you mentioned. Thank you so much. I pray I never get another one. They were horrible, and that is an understatement.

      You are very welcome. As long as you start off slow and easy, doing the exercises should not cause any cramps. The worst I have had happen is a few mild spasms on days I have tried to push too hard. Nothing to the painful point of spasm though, more like twitching. After 2 months, I still get them on rare occasions, but they are so slight now, that I can just ignore them. I've only had one true cramp since starting these exercises, and that was during the first week. I was able to stretch it out within 30 seconds or so. Had never been able to stretch one out before that. I went from 1-2 cramps a day, to 1 cramp in 2 months now. Put away all the potassium, magnesium, muscle relaxers, vinegar, everything. I still work 50 hour weeks with alot of being bent over doing repair work, kneeling down for long periods, etc. It's pretty much given me my old life back.

    for immediate relief try ice i know it helps me. i had one so severe last night it was affecting my groin i thought i was gonna have to call an ambulance thats how painful and severe it felt. an ice pack or ice cube should help fairly quickly within a couple minutes or so. this is the first time that my inner thigh still feels sore the next day and feels like it might happen again at any minute.

    A friend of mine gave me his inversion table. I have been using it every single day at least twice a day for just a couple of minutes each time. Besides relieving the tightness in my lower back the spasms have stopped. Someone told me that I might have a back disc problem. A therapist told me it sounded like a central disc issue because the spasms often hit both inner thighs simultaneously. So it makes sense that treating my back is relieving pressure on my my discs which appears to be relieving the spasms. I stopped with all the creams and lotions. I still take Cramp Defence because of foot cramps. I also took a break from working out to give my body a break. So far so good. I do think the inversion table is a big solution. Oh, I also started doing DDP Yoga that is helping to stretch my hip muscles. This appears to be helping also.

    I am 53 almost 54. I have been suffering from multiple leg, feet cramps for years. By far the upper inner thigh is the worst. I get up and walk them out. Cramps affect my toes. arch of my feet. the side of my ankle and the back of my upper legs. I'm not sure if it is 1 of my medicines causing it. I keep hydrated so that isn't it. can someone help me figure this out.? Thank you. p.s. I am type 2 diabetic also.

      Hi Christine,

      First of all I totally feel your pain. For decades I've struggled with cramps similar to yours. Attacking cramps with nutrition is paramount. Hydration and Electrolytes have to be replenished EVERY SINGLE DAY. Stretching impacted areas daily is also key. And for me, tending to my back helped tremendously. I also just read about stretching the hip muscles helps with groin and upper thigh pain. I started doing that just recently. Two years of agonizing upper inner thigh episodes have stopped! But I am also working out less aggressively. And of course asking your MD for more guidance should be helpful. I take Cramp Defence and started doing DDP Yoga.

    My inner thigh leg cramps only came at night for years but now it's also in the evening hours.

    Let me describe the pain... Call 911, put a bullet in my head, amputate my legs... just kill me. That's the pain level, no exaggerating.

    I had DS weight loss surgery in '04 and all of my fast-soluble vitamin levels are LOW. A, D, E, K, iron, and a few others.

    I tried drinking Tonic Water, no use other than actually I now enjoy it as a soft drink and test positive for THC, heroine and methadone. Haven't tried magnesium. I am hesitant to take more pills when it is an irregular occurrence.

    Anyone else want to die when the inner thigh cramps hit?

      Hi David. Sorry that you get those brutal leg cramps, but your not alone. I've had them for over 25 years. They used to be much more frequent, but then they almost stopped, that is until last weekend. Out of nowhere I got bad ones three days in a row. I thought those days were over.

      So just know your not alone.

      I feel your pain! I tried a whole bunch of remedies but nothing worked very well. I know the pain and the fear of the pain coming back. It basically takes over your life doesn't it? I think I figured out what was causing my inner thigh spasms and cramps and I think I have short term solution. I hope this helps. It wasn't nutrition as much as it was something going on with my lower back. A friend gave me his inversion table and since I started using it combined with working out less the spasms have stopped. And since the spasms often happened in both legs someone noted that it may be a lower back central disc that impacts both legs. It makes sense. I think I still need some kind of help because sometimes the spasms seem to threaten to come back but thankfully it has been almost three months now that I have been pain free. So I completely stopped all of the gels and pills and hot baths. That should be good for my liver. But I will have to deal with the disc issue one of these days if I have some kind of damage. So look into non-nutrition causes. Wish you well. By the way, I lived in the Bronx in NYC and went to high school there.

      Your so right about a lower back problem triggering the thigh cramps. Like its a reaction to a pinched nerve or something like that. My brother is a chiropractor and he totally agrees. I used to get them years ago after crushing all the muscles in both thighs in a car wreck. I was partially ejected out of my truck as it rolled end over end at 75 miles per hour. I ended up underneath of my truck which was up side down on top of me. And I had rolled down into a Gulley to where no one could see me, so I layer there with my legs inside the truck and the roof of the truck smashed down on them. Needless to say, I've been suffering from leg problems ever since. that was 25 years ago.
