I get these at night, inner thighs, feet & ankles, worst pain I have ever felt. I do have spine issues, didn't think it was related but sounds like it is. Been to my primary several times for this as well as neurologist , neither seem to know what's causing it. Was prescribed gabapentin, but who wants to take another pill just to sleep at night, not to mention this makes me groggy and is normally used to treat restless leg syndrome .
At night I'm afraid to move at all and forget trying to stretch at all the springs them on . I recently tried doing Pilates can't do that either that also brings them on . It's got so bad over the past week, every night what seems like every hour I woken up with the start of one, I have to jump up out of bed to walk around to make it go away . I also now have to avoid certain activities for the fear of one coming on, which they do during this activity which is quite embarrassing.
I work out pretty much everyday, I started to think it was by sweating daily with my workout routine did seem to increase the frequency of them, but I don't want to stop working out. My primary did put me on a daily dose of potassium as well as magnesium, the magnesium helped for a short time but no longer does . I'm at a loss like you

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that this happens to you so often, now & then is horrible enough. I doubt if its the exercise, I am overweight & somewhat sendentary.Just doing everyday task feels like a workout for me, although it does seem to happen more when I've had to stand for prolonged periods but not always, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to what causes them. One thing we all agree on is they are the most excruciating pain. I hope we get some answers to what actually causes them so we can try to prevent them.

Been dealing with thia for last 3 yrs. Doctors have no clue & say it will pass. SO frustrating!! My thigh, back of leg down to my toes is numb & painful. Have degenerative disks & sciatic problems. These thigh cramps are debiltating. I've heard you can have nerve burned which isn't a permanent solution since nerves grow back but lasts 2-3yrs. Talked with someone who has it done & said its totally worth it. No pain for couple years - worth looking into for me. I can't sleep on my side due to back & leg pain. Have to sleep on my back, so sleeping in fetial position isn't the issue. In such pain I can't even straighten my leg to ease thigh pain! I need to find a solution & don't want pain meds just to "bandaid" it. Can't understand why doctors don't have a solution or know a cause.

It doesn't make any sense to me either considering how many people are having the issue. I was up at 2 o'clock this morning myself with the severe I cramping, it is so painful!! I am still continuing to have back issues as well just had another injection two weeks ago, they are talking about burning the nerves with me as well, but I am doubtful that would help with the cramping

Hey to ya'll ... After reading most of the messages that have been posted, I'm surprise to see that no one have brought up the diagnosase of "Stiff-mans Syndrome" ... Yes, this is a real Disease, and while it's a " One in a Million" type problem, that is what I have ... Please, check into this, and you'll find that about the only thing that works to stem the onset of this is Valium. It started to me when I was about 45, and while trying to explain the extrem PAIN that occures to Drs., they mostly just went "Hum" and did nothing. Thank the good Lord for the Internet ... After reading-up on this, I took copies of what I found to my Dr., and now he's a believer. So check into this, and let me know what you think. I'm also a EMT, and have been searching for info. on this for a LONG time ... They do have 'site' that address this issue, so as you are awear, you are not alone. Valiume DOES work for me, most of the time ... Trust me, I know the pain, and the tears ya'll are going through ... God Bless, OHB

Hello Everyone, I have just joined the forum.
I have been speaking with my various doctors for years about leg cramps, including inner thigh cramping, which is the worst pain of all.
A physiotherapist identified it as out-of whack electrolytes a few years ago, and I began using various preparations on the marker to replace electrolytes. I have indeed found that when i sweat more, or don't drink enough water/liquids during the day, the cramping is worse at nights.
A few years ago, however, I came across a home-remedy which has worked like a charm for me-
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup water (cold or room temperature)
I keep a bottle with this mix in the fridge, and whenever I get a severe cramp, I reach for my "magic mix". It works for me every time! I gulp down about 1/4 cup. (it's not very pleasant-tasting). If it does not work immediately (which it does most times), I take another 1/8 cup. You can adjust the amount of water to make it strongr or weaker. I stopped buying the other stuff when I found this solution.
I also drink a lot of coconut water (young nuts), which contains electrolytes, and just generally keep myself hydrated with water and other non-sweet, non-gassy drinks. (I live on an a tropical island, so cocunuts are readily available!
I am currently doing blood tests to pin down the exact nature of the deficiency, so that the endocrinologist can try to treat it definitively. In the meantime, he has recommended quinine, (which I am very reluctant to take) in the hope of providing me with a more permanent solution. (The 'magic mix' is not a permanent solution. It's episodic)
I hope this helps.

How long before this homemade remedy works? I've thought all along that not drinking enough water & overworking my muscles was my problem.Someone said to stretch your legs straight out before getting out of bed & that helps sometimes.Thank You for your suggestion,I will try it( probably at room temperature.)
P.S.
When Walmart used to sell leg cramp pills with quinine, they almost always helped.

Works almost immediately for me 90-95% of the times- 30seconds to 1 minute. If it's taking longer, I use half the amount again. Very few times that it has not worked, and I have to 'walk out' the cramp, or stretch the leg in various directions until the muscles relax.
I just bought Quinine tablets. Took one last night. Bad reactions today. Won't be using it again. Waiting to see what the blood tests reveal.
Let me know if the home remedy helps at all.
Best wishes for 2017!

I would think I could make this & put it in a water bottle in my night stand drawer so it's right there if I need it.I wouldn't think it would go bad.I would love to say I can't wait to try it but it would be nice if I never had to try it.I doubt if I will be that lucky.Thank you for the input. If I have to try it I'll let you know how it works for me.Thanks again.

Pat, when I get my cramps I can't move. How do you get to your refrigerator for your homemade drink?

I have always associated my inner tigh cramps with dehydration. When I know I'm working harder than usual I try to up my water and electrolyte intake. I need to force myself to up my water uptake or the cramps will start. I also take extra magnesium.
Your homemade remedy is a good one. We give it to our children when they get sick and are getting dehydrated.
