Severe left groin pain (female- 6+ months)

I am a 19 year old female and have had severe groin pain for six months now. The pain is indescribable and takes my breath away, it is so sharp almost like someone is viciously ripping my leg from my pelvis bone. It happens all day everyday consistently no matter if I'm resting or walking. Nothing stops the pain except for naproxen which I have been taking everyday as I have no choice, I can't live with the pain. Usually naproxen works but for some reason recently the pain won't go away even with naproxen. When I first got this pain I was constantly in a & e and the doctors office in hysterics and the only tests they did no matter how much I cried and protested were a urine test and one blood test which came back clear. Everyone kept sending me away saying nothing was wrong. Eventually one doctor just felt around the top of my thighs a bit and then told me i had a strained a muscle in my leg and then when I went back a few weeks later she changed her opinion to a bad groin strain. However i think she's wrong as it's been six months, the pain is unbearable and constant, leaving me no quality of life without strong pain killers everyday and now they don't even help. I kept going back and last month I finally got an x ray which came out clear. I'm at a loss of what to do, the doctors refuse to listen to me and send me away no matter how much I plead. I've become seriously ill with anxiety and have bad health anxiety because of this I constantly thinking I'm dying or have a serious illness, I commonly have panic attacks because of the pain and wondering what it could be. I'm afraid of having this pain for the rest of my life and I'm afraid that I will never find out what's wrong. If anyone could point me in a good direction or give me some reassurance I would be so grateful

I can't offer you any solution to your pain I'm afraid, but I can caution you on the use of naproxen - when I was first prescribed naproxen 1 x 250mg per day (I'm still on it) by my previous GP, I wasn't prescribed the gastric combatant to the very nasty effects this drug can have on your stomach. If you haven't also been prescribed Omeprazole 20mg, please go back to your GP and DEMAND this drug which is purely used to counter the effects that naproxen has on your stomach. It was only when I moved area and changed my GP that I was prescribed Omeprazole. I would probably also ask/demand a second opinion at the very least by referral to a specialist, and maybe an MRI or CT scan (rather than the X-ray that you've already had, which I think was a waste of time as I believe that X-Ray's are for skeletal problems, as opposed to MRI and CT scans which I think relate to tissue problems)

I hope that you may find a solution to this pain as quickly as possible - model us posted

I don't know what happened with those last three words - they should have read "keep us posted" but this damned predictive text is a pain in the bum sometimes

Thankyou so much for your reply! I will definitely ask for omeprazole, crazy how the doctors haven't put me on it already. You've been very helpful smile

What happens when you bend over?

    What happens when you lift?

Do you have a bulge in your groin area?

    Is your groin hot?

    What makes it worse?

When I bend down and get back up my knee makes a bad cracking sound but I don't know if its related to the groin pain.

There's no obvious bulge in the groin area and I don't think it feels any hotter either but it just constantly feels off/ not normal.

Sometimes I'll get fast beating almost like a pulse in the area/ the surronding areas.

It's hard for me to tell what makes it worse as I'm on naproxen which usually numbs the pain but I would like to say sitting in certain positions/ a lot of walking. But honestly I don't think that's much to do with it as I could sit or lie down and do nothing obvious to irritate it and the pain would still be just as bad. Thanks for your reply!

Have you found out a cause?

I'm sorry that you're in pain. I know exactly how you feel!

      Hi Laurie

For a number of years I'd been suffering severe cramps in both my calves after walking no more than 20-30 yards, when I'd have to stop for a few minutes before repeating the whole process

Last month I was admitted to hospital on two occasions, the first at the beginning of the month, the second at the end, for angioplasty on one leg at a time; the results have been phenomenal, I actually had a complete blockage in my main artery of my left leg of a couple of inches, and whilst my body found a way to supply blood to my lower leg, it wasn't as powerful as would have been the case if my artery hadn't been blocked - I can now dance! and last Saturday night I managed just short of 30000 steps (pretty good for a young at heart male pensioner) - maybe you might have the same problem but just showing different symptoms?

      Just a thought

    Hello,

I've had the same thing for 2 different reasons. It sounds like you need a MRI to rule out your spine. I've had relief from L4-5, L5-S1 injections. Maybe you've got a pinched nerve. A chiropractor would help that.

The other issue was a pelvic organ prolapse. You'll need to see a urogynecologist to diagnose that. A pessary helped.

    Take care,

      Thanks so much!

I've already pushed my doctor to give me an ultra sound on my groin.

But when i go back to my doctor next im going to bring up these two things up.

I've never heard of a pelvic organ prolapse until you mentioned it.

I remember I lifted a chair up the stairs before the pain started so im wondering if that has anything to do with it?

Though I didnt think a 20 year old carrying a chair up the stairs would cause so much trouble!

I know this was posted about a year ago but, wondered if you found out the issue. I was having the same issues when I was younger and it took them 6 months to figure out that it was the muscle around my hip basically detached itself creating a hurt groin because the muscle was practically floating.

Hey I know this was posted almost a year ago but I’m wondering if you were able to get diagnosed? I’ve been having the same symptoms as you for the last 6+ months now and it’s mostly a constant burning ache deep in my left groin. I haven’t been able to walk/ exercise as much as I used to and I get this super tight feeling in my inner thigh to the back of my knee of the same left side if I over exert myself. I’ve done multiple MRIs of the hip and spine, a vaginal ultrasound, an x-ray, I had an EMG nerve testing and aside from a small labral tear in the hip nothing else shows. I’m waiting for a referral to get a cortisone injection in the hip to determine if the pain is truly originating from the hip but I feel like it might be something else like a torn tendon or ligament? I remember back in April I was running heavily and I felt stabbing pains deep in the left groin which could be related but it frustrates me that the pain persists despite medication (I’m also taking Naproxen) and various forms of physiotherapy and massage therapy. It’s driving me crazy that my doctor and several therapists haven’t been able to determine what is wrong! I hope you were able to find resolution.

      Hi Justine

I can't help with a diagnosis, but I noticed that you're taking Naproxen- are you taking anything like Omeprazole to counter the effect that Naproxen might be having on your stomach? If you aren't, get your doctor to prescribe Omeprazole because Naproxen can damage your stomach, it's really nasty stuff

Yes I am! Thanks for your concern. My doctor made sure to include that with the version he prescribed me to reduce any gastrointestinal side effects. So far I haven’t had any issues with it and it won’t be something I take forever—it’s  just for the time being to hold off the inflammation until I am able to receive the steroid injection.

Hi Justine, wondering if you found anything out? I’m going through the same thing. I had the injections, didn’t work!! 3 doctors said I need a hip replacement, when I go to the surgeon, he’s telling me he don’t think that’s where the pain is coming from. Please let me know, I can’t take the pain anymore!! Thanks Sherry
