Severe stomach pain after eating 7 weeks.. Please help!!

It started 7 weeks ago after returning from a trip to New Zealand to visit my family. All of a sudden I felt pain all through my abdomen on evening and then very bloated and it got worst from there. It got to the point where I couldn't eat any food at all without my stomach feeling like it was about to explode, so painful! I'm a 37 year old female, 5ft 4, and now under 100lb. I've lost about 18lb in 7 weeks. I have never been sick like this before. I don't drink, I don't smoke, and I exercise at least 3 days a week. The doctor said its most likely inflammation pr ulcer and gave me a PPI. My blood tests came back normal and I tested negative for H.Pylori. After a while the acid reduced and I was able to eat small snack sized soft foods throughout the day without the exploding feeling. Last night I tried to add ground chicken to plain rice and my stomach flared up again.. nightmare! I hope it settles back down soon. All I can safely eat is yogurt, eggs, apple sauce, and thats about it.  I finally have an ultrasound booked for Thursday, I'm hoping it can eliminate a few things, or figure out the problem. I don't find mornings the worst, which it seems is more common for ulcers/inflammation, so I wonder if that's even what I have. Anyone have any ideas on what I should be doing? this is unbearable!! Will it ever go away?

There must have been some trigger for your condition.... did you eat anything unusual? Any medication you used?

Thanks for the reply. I didn't take any medication or get sick leading up to it starting. I went to new zealand because my sister had an emergency brain surgery - they found a 5 inch tumor and had to remove it. It was an incredibly stressful time. The doctor thinks maybe the extreme stress triggered it? Not sure if thats even possible?

stress its well known trigger for stomach issues....

But it could be plenty of factors....

Simple novo virus aka food poisoning...can last from 1 day up to few weeks or more...you didnt mentioned diarrhea or issues with stool...

Stomach lining iritation aka stomach gastritis...that can cause bloating..pain...etc when food being digested...

And unfortunately what you have to do here for now its eat only strictly the foods that are not irritating your stomach...it can take anywhere from weeks to months to fully recover...

Try to avoid painkilllers ...they will destroy your guts.... try probiotic yougurts.... and aloe vera juice. And do not stres!!! Its not end of the world.....

Thanks so much for the reply! This is great info. I haven't had diarrhea or stool issues, not going as often but I assume thats because I'm not eating as much. I will keep eating what I know I can tolerate, I think maybe I've been trying to add things when I should just stick to the few things that work. Thanks again, you're right, stress doesn't help!

Sometimes it can be a result of too little stomach acid, which causes a lot of problems.  If you don't have enough hydrochloric acid in your stomach, the sphinctre into your small intestine will not open , causing your stomach to bulge and the burning to go all the way up your esophagus to your throat.  I have had that and my dr. wanted to treat it with a PPI.  Instead, I took Betaine which helps your body to produce HCL.  Your dr. will likely not offer that alternative but its worth a try.  You would buy it at a health food store.

Hi Beverley, this is a really interesting reply. I never knew that happens with low stomach acid. Because I don't take medication often, when I do, it usually works overly well. The PPI may be causing what you are saying. It definitely feels like something isn't letting the food out of my stomach.. I will take a look at betaine and see what it is. Tanks again, this is really soooo helpful to know. It gives me some hope.

Ask for an endoscopy to look for gastritis and try a food diary to uncover food triggers.

Thanks Pippa, I will definitely ask. The doctor said its at least a 12 month wait for an endoscopy here in british columbia.. so crazy!

Stress can trigger gut problems such as gastritis.

I wonder if it was stress that triggered it then.. i wondered if it could have been something like that but had never heard of it before.

The 12 month wait does seem a long ttime but you could always ask for it to be put forward if there is a cancellation should your pain get worse.

Great idea, I called today to see if there were any cancellations.. I'm now on the "cancellation list". Lets hope they call soon!

I had an ultrasound today and waiting on the result of that from my doctor. The  technician said "I can't see your stomach or intestines with an ultrasound but the rest looks healthy".  It really does feel like its limited to my stomach. The struggle is not being able to eat! blah!

Get the endoscopy done. It might be an ulcer. Try cold milk when the pain flares up and maybe an antacid. What are your eating habits like? Do you skip meals? Were you on any painkillers for a long period or do you drink excessive alcohol? These are some causes of ulcers. PPIs will reduce stomach acid so the ulcer can heal. It will be ok, not to worry. Keep us posted.

I was told by the radiologist that she couldn’t scan my stomach, my bowel was in the way and bowel gas was obscuring everything.  My pancreas couldn’t be seen either! It was very inconclusive.  No conculsions were drawn from my gassy bowel, but looking back I wonder if it was a sign of my IBS which was my eventual diagnosis.  Good kuck with getting a cancellation!

If this totally started after a specific time - like your N.Z. trip then I would get a parasite removal supplement.  Parasites create tons of gut problems -- I know because I did.  Also eat fermented foods -- that's why applesauce is ok for you to eat.  Did they give you antibiotics?  If so your gut flora is shot.  Chat me up if you want to talk more.  Good luck..

Great idea I'll try that. I have seen multiple doctors and now a specialist. The specialist gave me a different PPI which gave me the worst side effects.. blah! Still in agony waiting for someone to help give me answers sad I am now below 100lb which is getting scary.
