Severe tingling/itching whenever body heats up. Cannot sweat
Posted , 47 users are following.
I have this strange new problem that just started happening to me recently. I don't sweat anymore (except under my arms) whenever I get hot. Instead my body becomes severely itchy and I get a full body tingling/pins & needles sensation. It is extremely painful and spreads through my body in a lightning type of pattern. It happens every time I get hot, nervous or physically exert myself. It evens happens if I laugh too much. It seems that in every situation where my body would normally sweat I don't anymore. I also notice when this happens my whole body becomes red and small bumps appear all over my arms and chest area. What I'm assuming is that this is some severe case of clogged sweat pores but all over my body instead of one specific place. Are there any doctors out there that know what this is and/or know of any medications that can open up sweat pores? Cold showers do not work. I am a 20 year old male.

I have been having this problem for two months now. I used to do some hard work that I used to sweat a lot. I switched jobs and now am more of an office person. Whenever I am with my gf, be it a week or weekend, I don't experience the sensations but as soon as she leaves, after close to 15hours, the needles starts again. I will support your advice on hard exercise. I bet that's what helps. I was almost going to the doctor but after reading that not most people have been helped by a doctor, I think I will get back to hard tasks or extreme exercises. I have been embarrassed to talk about it with anyone. This platform has helped me.

hey guys. thought id gives you all my experience. so, my itchy sensation started like 4 months ago, while driving, my feet kept itching and it came to a point where i literally had to take my shoes off and itch it! then it started getting worse because while eating some spicy food, my head started to itch really bad. I realised that it started to get worse, the itchy spread down to my upper body. it wasnt just any itch. it was more like a "prickly itch sensation". i thought to myself, what is it thats triggering this. after a month of living with it, i had narrowed it down. It only occured when my body started to get/feel Hot. I also realised that i couldnt sweat, well i probably can sweat but i havent pushed myself that far (because its as if instead of sweating, the itchy sensation takes over) and if i was to push myself to sweat, id probably go crazy lol. i then thought id leave it and see if it goes away, but it didnt . since lockdown has ended, i started going back to the gym. and honestly, havent been after a couple of days(i used to be a hardcore fitness person pre lockdown) i think the fact that i havent worked out for over 7 months played a part. so, the reason i stopped was because as soon as i finished a set, id start feeling warm and the itchy sensation took over (i was literally like a crackhead in the gym, itching my whole body). i thought to myself, f**** this , its time to visit the doctors because its really starting to effect my lifestyle and health. so, i went to doc, they sent me for a blood test. got the results back and basically, the results shows that i have VITAMIN D3 deficiency and an ELEVATED LIVER ENZYME (never drank alcohol in my life, so its the nonalcoholic version lol). so they have prescribed to be 25,000 IU Vitamin D3 for 6 weeks and after that i have to go in for another blood test to see if levels have gone back up to normal. regarding the elevated liver enzyme issue, they havent prescribed anything because my condition is mild. so im guessing a change of diet and cutting off energy/fizzy drinks should help with that.
still got to speak to a doctor about my blood results, hopefully will do that sometime next week. however, i do have a couple of friends that are doctors who said i shouldnt worry too much abiut the elevated liver enzyme (its common). I will look more into it if my problems still persist after 6 weeks.
HERES MY PLAN FOR THE NEXT 6 WEEKS:
hopefully, if my plan works and i still remember.... I will update everyone on here.
ps. i think my issue started because I used to hit the gym 5 days a week before the pandemic but since lockdown, i have been eating junk and drinking energy/acidic drinks and just not exercising to make up for it resulting in gaining more unhealthy weight.
i guess for most people, it will be the same issue (not disciplining ourself over lockdown and eating anything and everything, forgetting that we didnt have the gym to make up for the treats).
I guess now that we are all in this s**t together. whoever has recently managed to get rid of this issue, it would be great to see a " step by step guide" or something to help us aswell. i mean, if my method works. i will create a PDF for everyone on here to view or download so that they can follow the same process as i did to get rid of it.

Hi Luthy. I’m sorry to hear that you are experiencing this problem. However, most of us with similar conditions have redness and bumps on the skin so your condition might be a little different. I would suggest talking to a doctor first to see if they know what it could be. I hope you are able to get better,

Hey, there's a decent chance you are a covid long hauler. Any chance you had it? I had a mild case in February 2020 and this is one of my many lingering symptoms. Also curious if you have post exertional malaise. Basically, somewhere around 12-48 hours after a hard workout, I get flu-like symptoms for 1-6 days.
The only way I avoid these things are:

Hi Tracy. Thank you for your concerns but I developed this condition around 4 years ago, before COVID existed so I do not think this is related. I also do not suffer from post exertional malaise, as exercise actually helps my condition. I do hope you get better though.

newbie...I'm only on day 3 of pins and needs when I get hot.. I dont want this for years dang it. currently they are only on my lower back. I do not get red bumps or blotches.
so. I'll try to cliff note my life.
I'm 41 and never been a big sweater. I can sweat I just don't sweat heavily.
I've not been super active over the years except some gym time. its been awhile though and like others I've added some covid weight..
I worked a desk job from 20-38.
my current job sometimes requires me to do some physical work. not much but sometimes I get hot. maybe not sweat hot but definitely hot.
I live in ohio. it just got cold. when I have to do physical work it's in the warehouse which rarely hits 60.
but 3 days ago I got hot at work doing something. and that's when the intense pain hit. it was quick..1-2 minutes. just in my lower back.
and now ever since that point. it's the same everytime I get warm.
what I've also noticed the last 3 days..
I get warm laying in bed..my furnaceis set to ridiculous.... anyways I go through the pain...fall asleep...middle of the night I wake up and I'm sweating... like major sweat. sometimes pins and needs sometimes not.
now to add in... I do think there's a chance of a pinch nerve. actually about a week ago I bought one of those cool newish massage things. with a ball on the end that punches you. I've been using it in the same spot that's getting needles.
soooo I'm gonna work that route. maybe go for a chiro visit and a massage.
and add some vitamin b12 and d..
hows everyone else doing?
any other updates?

So I had this issue like a month back and I scoured the internet to look for solutions and never found anything so, even though I've never posted in a medical forum before, I decided to answer this.
A month ago I got a horrible itch all over my legs and thighs, like ants were biting me and refusing to let go. And I couldn't sweat. Every time I was close to breaking out in a sweat the awful itch would return. It was so bad I couldn't sleep.
About two days after this started, I started lathering myself with moisturizing lotions (the specific one I used was Vaseline damage repair) at night, especially after baths. I did this for about five days. I also stopped lathering myself more than once with soap and avoided using air heaters.
It cured my issue. So far the problem hasn't returned. I don't know if it'll work for anyone else but give it a go I guess. Because that itch was absolute torture and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Hi James, are you still around? how are you doing now? Recovered completely?

Hi All.
My name's Brad, I'm 36 and live in southern England. I first had this non-sweating / prickly condition in October 2008 when I was 23. It had the symptoms that others have described; an apparent lack of sweating and being triggered by situations that would usually result in sweating, such as physical exertion, exposure to heat (doing the washing up was difficult) or sudden adrenaline spikes like when you accidentally drop a cup on the floor. In January 2009 I went to the doctor and she said it was due to puberty and I'd grow out of it! I reminded her that I was 23, nearly 24, but she just shrugged. It was my nan's funeral in late June 2009. I still had the condition and was deeply concerned about how I was going to cope with wearing a suit in very hot weather. On that day, however, I sweated as normal with no prickly sensations at all. I was "cured".
Until October 2021. It's now February 2022 and it hasn't relented. I have a healthy diet. I'm not overweight and never have been. I already take vitamin supplements which include B12 and D3 so I wouldn't think I'm deficient in those. I'm going to try the exercise method. I do workout casually but I'll try to up it, seek out the prickly sensation and see if I can drive through it.
I've always preferred cold weather over hot weather; I wonder if other people on here prefer cooler weather too, even before they first experienced this condition? I've also noticed in my case and from reading other people's that it seems to start as the weather cools, in the autumn/fall. It's almost as though our bodies forget how to handle hot situations.

I would like to add that when my body's working normally, I sweat easily and more than my friends and relatives. A simple hot day without any exertion was enough to have a damp back and arms and have it trickling down my face. I used to wish I didn't sweat so much but I'd gladly go back there now!

Hey Brad! I am a 21M over in the US. Similar to you, I have always preferred the cold weather and always sweated easily. The itching has always 'been around' since 2016, but in October of 2020 is when it truly made a comeback, one that still is powerful to this very moment. In my case, I have unfortunately not been able to exercise and have the effects wear off as the itch can easily return in minutes. While I can sweat after those exercising sessions, it is not enough to ward off the itch. Furthermore, I have gotten a blood sample that yielded nothing out of the ordinary. Similar to you, I am of average weight and have a balanced diet. Have the effects of the itch been present daily for you?

Hi Everyone, I have been suffering from the exact same condition described by many in this thread for the past 3 months. I have never had a condition like this in my life or issues with sweating ( i don't even wear antiperspirant routinely). I do not develop a rash, but I can see tiny white bumps if I look very closely at my skin when heating up and developing the tingling/itching/burning. Like others, if I scratch myself or press on my skin it becomes red but otherwise there is no rash or hives. I not only get this in my upper torso but also my neck and scalp (the latter of which are the most uncomfortable). Sometimes it is so bad that it feels as though my skin is on fire. I have not had a hot shower in 3 months. I do not think the condition is cholinergic urticaria as this condition involves hives and usually takes 10-30 minutes to resolve. My condition resolves as soon as I cool down (almost instant if I jump into a cold shower). I have seen a dermatologist and been prescribed 1% hydrocortisone cream and high doses of anti-histamines both of which have not helped. I do regularly exercise, even though the sessions are like torture but after I actually start to sweat more profusely, the condition largely resolves. However, I have noticed when doing cardio that I sweat considerably less than I used to before 3 months ago. Therefore, I think this condition is a form of hypohidrosis or anhidrosis, whereby for some reason we cannot sweat properly. I drink a lot of coffee and this may be causing some level of dehydration. I am going to reduce or eliminate coffee and drink lots of water. I am tempted to go a sauna daily to promote sweating, but honestly worried I would pass out from the discomfort. If someone finds a cause or consistent solution, please post in this forum as it seems most physicians are unaware of this condition. I will follow up with this information with my dermatologist and see if he has any further ideas. I would not wish this awful condition on my worst enemy. It also seems there is a male preponderance for this condition. I wonder why less women seem to get this problem?

I had the same issue a few years ago in the late winter early spring. I went to the doctor he sent me for some "electrical" tests of some sort in my body and found nothing. He thought it was dryness in the house.
A few months ago it came back. Started mild in November then progressed to now virtually everyday. It seems to subside quickly if I move to a cold place - even moving feet in the bed or if I pour water. No physical signs. I went back to the doctor and he said it was not unusual...like he was blowing me off. I think I will try the B12 thing and maybe see if I can get a referral to a dermatologist. Not to say misery loves company but I do appreciate this thread. Thank you.

Hello everyone, i am also experiencing the same symptoms. I agree with Robert, I noticed that whenever i sweat, i seem to get a little relief.. I started to experience this recently. I am searching everywhere looking for answers. I am trying to understand what cause these symptoms. Is there a name for it? is there a cure? what caused it? Are there some other underlying health issues? is it nerve-related?
