Sex after hip replacement...

Posted , 11 users are following.

Hello

A little embarrassed to be asking, I have done some research but figure if I really want to know then this is probably the best place to ask with regards to sexual positions that are ok and safe without risking a new joint....

I have read that there are some positions especially for women that are more of a no no is that just being over cautious...?

Also eeeekkkk I am going to ask this here because quite frankly i have no idea where else to ask without feeling mortified but is anal sex also safe after a hip replacement.....there whew said it!  Any information will be appreciated.  Thanks xxx

There is a lot of information on line about best and safe positions for both men and women. Lots of diagrams and information about who has had which joints replaced. Sex after the op was also covered in the preop “school”, so you could also discuss it there. Anal sex is not one of my things but I should think position wise it would be OK, or are you thinking microbiologically?

      Hey Maggie

I have looked at diagrams....I am thinking position wise....the anxiety being doing something to cause dislocation potentially....some of the positions they say especially for women to stay away from I was wanting to know if that was people's experience or if actually you can pretty much do anything....I asked about anal due to concerns around infection.............if any.......eeeekkkk hey thanks for your reply.  I am weighing up whether the THR is worth it across all areas....information is key.

Are you thinking re possible infection of the closed joint in the same way as it used to be thought that dental work could cause such infections. Yes the anus contains millions of bacteria as does the mouth. I would think that as long as your immune system is OK, so that your body deals with any transient bacteraemia,  It would be fine.

    Hello Lilylou,

    Greetings from Exeter...

Well, how long is a piece of string?

For me 4 weeks, yes carefully, but riding a bicycle is pretty easy as a skill. For others longer, esp if complications or elderly.

    Enjoy....

      Hi again Lilylou!

Oh you'll certainly get honest replies here , giggle...

AlI was adding was yes of course read the advice, check your PT or medics if you are normalish, and girl on top after hip op seems usually best, but as long as you go careful let nature and organism happen and you and partner get orgasms and healing serotins.

It's a bit like a 5K run six months later, or riding bike to shops.

Lilylou deserves to be a happy bunny, so yes dont be stupid and do it on the table, yet, but enjoy your new hip lots.

Lol thank you!  To be honest I haven't found the various websites I have looked at useful, I am wanting more information.  So anything is useful information!

The fear of dislocation or infection is foremost on my mind.....I must admit I have been wondering if I would be better not having the operation.............

Yes I did read not to do it on the table, or the kitchen bench (uneven surfaces) etc.....no worries comfort comes first! x  : )

Please have your surgery. I do not know how much pain you are experiencing but I waited until.mine was excruciating and I could not enjoy sex. I have had both of mine done and the second will be 4 weeks tomorrow. I am 62 and very sexual active and just last night my fiancee came over which he does often. He decides he wanted to have sex and I said I was not ready because a body will let you know. I am just a little nevorous to get that hoing again. I love making love but I want to enjoy it as well. I just think living life to the fullest and without that horrible pain is worth more getting the surgery done than an orgasm that will be enjoyed at that time. Wishing you the best.

Hey there all good here haven't had the op yet.....feeling incredibly anxious and looking at all the ways that it will potentially impact.

What worked for us pre op now works well postop there are lots of good images of safe positions online. You’ve got guts that’s for sure 😘but if 60 year old ladies can talk about sex online we’re happy to help lol. It’s not like we say “well that was great but let’s never do that again” It will be a sad day when that stage of our marriage ends ??

      Hello Bridget

I must admit I was hesitant posting about this topic but thought what the hang.....knowledge is power so to speak lol.  Some websites say no to doggy position (sorry to sound so crass, cringe), but I am not sure where else to get information other than from people who have been there and done that.....I will have a chat with my Doctor (sure to blush a bright red)....

Some websites appear to contradict each other.....x

My surgeon made a point of telling me he was giving me “sexy hips” that can practically rotate (I nearly died laughing)

😂  not sure how true this will be, but I’m having the first one done in 4 weeks so I’ll let you know lol ...
