Shortness of breath

Posted , 10 users are following.

I was first diagnosed with anxiety and then also depression. I have been going through this about six months but they have not found anything. I still refuse medicine but I did try CBT. CBT feels like it wasnt working. My question is now Im having shortness of breath off and on and I have been to the emergency room twice and nothing. I have had lung blood work, to CtScans and a million chest xrays. Is there anyone who experiences shortness of breath as a symptom of depression or anxiety?

What kind of med? because when they first diagnosed me with anxiety the doctor prescribe for me Zoloft and it was horrible. After three weeks I stopped them because I get worse with my symptoms. I have been scared every sense to try any other anti depressant. My doctor one time gave me ativan only 0.5mg and it worked for about a week and after that know good. Once when I had an attack I had to take two of them for it to work. I am just so confussed about this.

Hello im on citalopram 40mg now. Its saved my life honeslty it was really hard for at least 2 weeks as they make all your syptoms worse for a while but i stuck to it and im so glad i did. Most meds to make you feel worse before u get better. U just got to think to yourself u will get better amd its just the meds that are making you feel like this . Thats what i did and i couldnt thank my doctor enough after the meds kicked in i felt like a completly different person no panic attacks no over thinking everything and i mean everything and anything. i was so happy could relax and do whatever i wanted without having a panic attack or standing at my front door for hours meaning to go out but in end never did go out. it is really hard to start with but it is so worth the wait and you will think why didnt i get help sooner. I suffered for 5 years and i wish i got help sooner xxxx

Thank you so much because I mean I was to the point to where I wanted to just quit my job. Then I got to the point because of the arm, neck, feet, and hands pain and numbness, I don't want to go to work because Im afraid something will happen. My mind keeps telling me I need to be at home or with a family member just in case something happens. It has really affected my life. I live everyday almost as if I am going to have a stroke or heart attack. Is that how you were doing those five years?

Yep i was just like you and i put up with it for 5 years never went out on my own allways in my mums car never used to get out the car just sat in there waiting for her to come bk from whatever she doing. The doctor told me bow its got to the point were it was effecting my life everyday i need to take citalopram and i did i just thought to myself it really cant get any worse then what i was already like. It was hell for the first few weeks i stayed in bed for the whole 2 weeks could eat couldnt sleep my heart was going really fast everyday and night got numbness everywere tingly everywere felt very hot and sweaty blurred vision head was tight couldnt breath allways yawning to get a better breath whole body shaking feeling very very low.never ever thought id be normal again. But honeslty after 4-5 weeks on citalopram then i was on 20mg to start with. I felt a massive releif that i could enjoy life again and relax and watch tv films go out shopping and just feel happy. I was so desperate to feel better i was willing to try anything xxxxx

Yes definitely a symptom. There's a thing on the internet that shows you how to breath during an anxiety attack. It helped me a lot.

    Hi tamantha,

Yes unfortunatley it is one of the physical symptoms that can come from anxiety, The list  of symptoms are endless and they can come and go.

Breathing through your nose can help. And rest assured that no matter how hard it feels to breath and you feel you cant breath... you wont stop breathing it is anxiety.. anxiety cannot harm you, it makes you uncomfortable and feel scared and shaky etc.

Mindfulness meditation is very good at retraining your mind on how to react to the feelings of panic/anxiety and how to accept the feelings instead of fighting them.

Sounds weird i know.. but try reading up on it ... info available on the net.

I do it daily and its helped me.

You have to keep it up every day as physical symptoms can linger for sometime after the anxiety goes.

But a healthier mind is a healthier happier you xx

    Good luck lovely

    Give it a whirlnx

I too have been going through similar symptoms. Daily feeling of being short of breath. Its not like I'm gasping for air, its the feeling of being tough to breath almost, and I feel it in my throat. My levels and tests all pan out, but yet, I still feel the same way. Doctor did say its anxiety and my therapist is doing EMDR, another type of therapy and instead of putting me on the pharmacetuicals right way, put me on GABA and 5-HTP, just natural varients of the same stuff. Been a few weeks and I feel mellow and calm, but its still there. I have a Pulmonary function test on Tuesday but after that, they really don't wan't to go any further. Its always hard to accept that its something in our heads causing the symptoms, although real and legitimate, but man, I hate it. I run daily and I can feel it while running but can run a 5K and not drop dead so Its got to be psychosomatic right!!!

Hey there and I'm sorry that you too are battling this anxiety. It is really tough indeed, and what's worse are the symptoms that come along. Search 100 symptoms of anxiety and you'll see just how much our body goes through with anxiety. It is weird and very hard to believe but it's true. I have experienced shortness of breath lots of times thinking i have lung cancer, heart problems and stuff..it goes away, comes  back..it's always like that, The only thing you can do to break the cycle,is to manage your anxiety. Have you considered starting psychotherapy? no CBT but actual psychotherapy with a psychiatrist. Also, did you give CBT enough time so you can see if it actually works? Best of luck!

I have my referral for the psychiatrist, I just have not called to make an appt. yet. I am so bad. I keep dealing with medical stuff and refusing mental health. However, I will call on Monday to make an appt.

Yeah, we give so much time to medical stuff that don't actually exist, instead of taking care of our mind..Best of luck and keep us updated!
