Shortness of breath with Costochondritis?
Posted , 83 users are following.
I was diagnosed with Costochondritis and I have been noticing shortness of breath along with pain. I have had EKG's and chest xrays as well as blood tests. My doctor firmly believes this is not a heart issue.
Has anyone else noticed shortness of breath with this? My pain is mainly in my sternum but radiates through out my whole chest wall.

Heey IpsyDaisy, i just came across this forum and i wanted to say thank you for your post as the comments have been interesting and comforting to read as i have never come across anyone else with costo.
I hope you are doing well.
I am 29years old just now and was diagnosed with this condition atleast 5years ago. So i would be happy to share my experience of having this for many years and can hopefully provide and gain some help.
I was pretty much diagnosed with this condition from the begining and my doctor seemed to know that it was costo pretty much straight away. Like others i had a chest xray and ECG and all were normal and i was told that it was costochondritis. My doctor was female and told me she actually suffered from it herself and was very helpful. She explained that it is a common condition found in young women and that it can last for 6months, to years, to never really going away. So she did say that i may suffer from it for a long time or it may just go away.
My symptoms in the begining were worse than they are now and i had been to the doctors a couple times about it and all had confirmed it was costo. The worst part for me would be the racing heart, palputations and feeling dizzy and out of breath. I remember shopping one day and just feeling like i had to sit down because i thought i was going to pass out. It happens randomly and i can do a hard workout at the gym and be totally fine then i could walk up the stairs and feel like im going to have a heart attack. The heart palpatations did go away after a while and the breathelessness seemed to improve (however it has come back recently which brought me to this forum). The part which has never really went away for me is the sorness around my chest area. My breast bone and ribs pretty much feel constantly sore to the touch, tender as if they are bruised. I wondered if anyone else has experienced this?
Things that have helped:
Naproxen prescribed helps with chest pain and i only take it on days where i feel so sore and uncomfortable but it works almost instantly.
BRAS!! I stopped wearing bras years ago and it has made my daily life so much better. This obviously depends on the individual but i stopped wearing padded and underwired bras and most days no bras at all. I now only buy a 'bralette' and still there are days where i have to take it off after an hour because i feel like i cant breathe. But having a restricted piece of clothing around that area all day can certainly make the condition worse and my GP also advised this as well.
I am thinking about trying CBD oil to help with pain and this condition and i just wondered has anyone tried this?
Sorry for the long post but i hope it offers some info and help to someone. Thank you everyone x

I was diagnosed with Costochondroitis some years back. It was irritating more than anything. These last couple of times have been horrible! The pain radiates to my upper back. When I woke up this morning, I felt like I was having trouble breathing after going up or down my stairs. My old Dr. said to just take ibuprofen and rest. That surely doesn't help now let me tell you. I have to lay with a pillow under my breastbone just to get some type of sleep. Any activity where I breathe a little harder feel like shortness of breath. I'm guessing due to all of the inflammation. I've had ekg's, chest xrays etc and I'm fine there. I need this pain to go away. I'm also icing and using a heating pad. Idc what docs say, IT CAUSES SHORTNESS OF BREATH!

Hi,
(Not a native English speaker, so sorry for any language mistakes)
Does anyone with costo has shortness of breath without feeling worsening pain in the ribs/chest when breathing deep, sneezing or coughing?
I was diagnosed with costo, has mild throbbing pain that comes and goes under my left breast, the ribs in that area are also tender and painful to touch (but they are also pretty painful to touch on the other side (right side) as well, not as much painful as in the left side, though), but It doesn't hurt at all when breathing deep, coughing or sneezing. I don't have any pain in armpit or arm, neck or jaw. Maybe very little pain in my upper left side of my back.
My main disturbing symptom is the shortness of breath, even within an easy or short activity, and general weakness and lack of energy.
I had chest x-ray, EKG, heart tests, ribs x - ray , mammography, breasts ultrasound and blood tests, and the conclusion was costo.
Any reply will help for reassuring. I'm very stressed. Thank you very much in advance for answering.
