Should I up my preds

hello everyone,

this afternoon at 2pm I had a fall, I was climbing up our rear garden bank when I placed my right foot on an uneven piece of land and my ankle went way over on its right side. The result I have broken my calcaneus bone where it meets the cuboid bone. Obviously at the time I was in dreadful pain and I thought I was going to be sick but as time went on the pain has subsided and I feel ok. I have a pot up to my knee but I need some advise.

iam at the 2 days old 1 day new stage of the dead slow and almost stop reduction reducing from 7.5 to 7mgs.

do you think I should continue with the reduction, stay on 7.5 or up my dose considerably and of course along with all if the options his long should I stay on/at any of these options.

thanks for any advice. Regards, tina

David, my situation is worse than any monty Python sketch. My darling husband is totally un house trained. God knows what this place will look like by the end of the weekend, met alone 6-8 weeks!

However, as a former engineer he has created a pully system whereby I can attach my hessian tesco bag and pull it up and down the stairs so that if I want to carry anything up or down the stairs I simply put in whatever at whichever end I'm at and pull it up or down for easy transportation, how great is that!!

i've sort of tided up all of downstairs and probably won't bother going back down stairs till this afternoon, now I'm going to sort of tidy up stairs then have a sort of stand up sit down wash. And, here's the monty Python bit, Bob says I Definately shouldn't do that without him in attendance because anything could happen. Regards, tina

Morning tina. not my intention to make light of your situation, But  your attitude to getting on with things just made me smile, plus the pully system, and your partners? take on washing  afraid bought another smile. Best wishes to you both. Dave.

Tina, what a brilliant hub you have!!!  That 'pully system' is damn brilliant -and especially the thought and concern that was behind it. ( It's a typical male pragmatic solution though!)  MY hub would be the type that would be muttering - " I'm always telling you that you walk too fast/slow, lurch too much to the left/right, wear the wrong shoes/clothes" and on and on . . HIS way of showing worry is to get cross.  . . Lucky you. enjoy your visitors and being pampered a bit.   T

I had a few incidents that I hurt myself during the dose reduction period. But I never increase the dose due to that. Because I believe that the extra pain is came from exterenal and not from my immune system. So I took care of the my injured area with whatever is appropriate. Don't panic the pain should be different from the PMR, unless you really feel the flare. If I were you I will hold on to the 7.5 for a few more days and if the PMR is not being affected by this injury then I will contiue the reduce schedule.

    Take good care,

    Lucy

That is fine, but it is not the extra pain due to the injury.  Quite often it is the stress and fatigue which comes with it.

Normally, when something happens, your adrenals glands kick in and give you extra cortisone to carry you through;   'think flight or fight', think how people have done extraordinary things, ie lifting a car from a child etc.

When on pred, we get a dose that will get us through 24 hours, till the next dose, when something happens untoward, we run out there is no extra supply handy as the adrenals glands are asleep.

As Tina has a 'pot' on that puts extra stress on other muscles and as the pmr is already making the blood supply to muscles more difficult,   it is wise to wait and see.

Good morning everyone, thank you so much for replying. This morning I am feeling a little less out of sorts and I had a great nights sleep. I woke up twice during the night and the pain was almost gone as I had taken 2 paracetamol.

I never realised just how unfit I was, I have pain at the sides of my neck, my upper arms, chest and back all from using these bloods crutches!! (Definately not pmr pain) Plus my left hip as its weight bearing the rest of my 3 stone overweight and totally unfit body!!!!

i have taken the normal 7.5 dose and will stick on that dose and ditch the reduction for at least 2 weeks as you have all suggested.

i'm just waiting on fracture clinic to call and I guess my recovery depends on their plan. But for the moment I feel well but the inconvenience is soul destroying but it could be worse!

      thanks everyone, regards, tina

The Red Cross lend you wheelchairs  don't hesitate to borrow one.

I was in plaster for six months  (long story).

If you lived nearer to me I would have lent you the one that is in the garage.   If goes on 'holiday' to others. lol

Ask the fracture clinic about the leg coverings you can buy which cover the plaster and let you shower.   I put a garden chair in the shower and sat down.

Buy Sketcher shoes, best thing ever.   And throw slippers and flip flops away.

I could have done with a 'Bob' for a pulley system.

Hi lodger, yes Bob is very practical when it comes to things I don't need! However the pully system I think is great.

yes flipperty flopperty type shoes are deadly - no support. But when I went to hospital all the staff are wearing them but Bob has chucked all mine out now.

i will contact Red Cross, I am a supporter yet had no idea.

      thanks, lodger.

Age UK and Hospitals have figures which shew more fractures of hips, legs and arms are caused by slippers etc.

After I snapped a tendon and was out of action for nearly a year. I  removed all rugs on top of carpets, threw out slippers and my lovely un sensible shoes.

I wear sketchers all the time unless I am going somewhere special that calls for something more dressy.   They come in all sorts of colours and you can throw them in the washing machine.  Great.

Lodger, I have 2 pairs of sketchers, oh bliss, and yes I found out that they can be easily washed in the machine after I got stuck in a bog in the woods opposite my house. I was walking home from church with my husband and dog, Katie, when I turned round and they were both gone! I panicked and scoured the woods and then accidentally fell in the big which I didn't know was there. When I eventually got out of the bog I then had to lie at the side and put my hands into it to retrieve my shoes which had remained there when my feet come out. I eventually got both of them out but never did find my socks. When I got home Bob was sitting down watching telly, but he had made me a cup of tea which by then was stone cold. Regards, tina

Sorry to read of your fall, tina. I hope your husband manages to cope with your list. Glad you can maintain a sense of humour. I was passing the undertaker's garage one day when I was feeling exhausted. One of the undertakers was standing outside and I asked him if he would open up the garage and let me have a wee snooze in one of the coffins but with the lid off! Said I'd let him know when I was awake! His face was a picture.😳😳

The only thing about Sketchers is - they are so big!  What do you wear about the house?

Well Definately not crocs anymore. Probably bare feet from now on although I think for the winter I'll have to invest in something, not sure what though. Regards, tina

You are advised to buy one size down.

In the house, outside the house - Sketchers.

Yes, maybe. It will be a shock to my system following my recent footwear habits. Regards tina
