Shoulder injury

Hi all ,

Around 4 years ago i hurt my shoulder in work and eventually it evolved into frozen shoulder so after many trips to the doctor and an x ray just to confirm i had no bone spurs causing problems i was booked in to have a cortizone injection.

The 1st injection was put into the front of my shoulder roughly an inch in from my pec muscle , fair play it worked fantastically well i had no pain from around 2 days later and it lasted around 8 months beforeit gradually started to wear off and i could feel the niggling pain returning.

I returned to the doctor and he re-booked another injection , had injection in the same place and again magic no pain and relief for around 7 months , pain gradually started to return again.

Off to the doctors i go again and he says ok good for another one i went to the same doctor and he said he would put the injection into a different position on the side of my shoulder this time . i argued and literally pleaded that it might not work as i have quite large muscle from weights etc and why not put it into the front where we know it works. He wouldn't listen to me sad and put it into the side of my shoulder.....it didn't work and left me in pain which increased weekly for around 4 months .

I asked for a referral from my GP at this stage for a specialist as i was in agony sleeping i could not get comfy unless shoulder was above my head supported by pillows , after a month i had my appointment with the Nhs specialist.

She performed various tests and movement tests and said i had a problem with my joint next to the collar bone and this time the cortizone would be put in using ultrasound in the royal glamorgan ( hospital )

This was 5 days ago....it hasn;t worked i am in utter agony ...nerve pain down arm ..up neck can't move my arm across my body or vertically straight up higher then my shoulder or anything with my elbow facing out and lifting sheer agony..and feeling preety damn depressed atm to be honest .

Have been taking co -codamols and ibuprofen and am havinf coeine withdrawel headaches as im trying not to take too many but im stuck ina catch 22 ....pain or headaches ughhh.

I rang my consultant today and spoke to her secetary she is on holiday for 2 weeks so i can have an appointment when she returns.....WHAT !!

Why have i paid in over £35000 since i started wrking on national ins for all this rubbish treatment.

I rand Bupa in cardiff , spoke to specialist he said consultancy is £199 and mri is £249 probably same day.....serosuly thinking this is my only answer as im off wrk currently looking like its going to be long term and i have a family mortgage etc...

God it's so damn depressing ...all i want is an Mri and to find out what's wrong...overall this has been ongoing for 4 years.

Thats my rant over time for tablets again as pain is bck and life is looking preety grey again...

good luck all who suffer from shoulder problems on the nhs will update when i get my Mri.

Regards Gavin

Update on my last post , am 8 weeks into chiro ( paid myself not cheap either ) and it gas helped immensely . Have been going twice a week he has re-aligned my bck shoulder and neck and fr play they fell good . Shoulder is still very sore in joint when i rause it vertically str8 up in air and is still achy ( the toothache i call it ) nerve pains have eases a huge ammount altho still get them occasionally . Am taking the odd ibuprofen and will stick with chiro fir fireseeable future . Chiropractor thinks joint is ok when he realigned it and broke the inflamation when it was frozen wow that hurt but felt great the day after and the movement came bck quickly . He thinks cos the injury is 4 years old the nerves will take a good 6 months to settle diwn and i am lifting a 1kilo weight to sliwly gsin strength in shoulder . I am bck with NHS on 6th jan for physio still no MRI , i am thinking if i still have resudual pain in the summer i will pay myself and if the results are that there was an injury i will be seeing a claims solicitor about negligence . 4 years being fobbed off why am i paying NI . On the whole tho gradually recovering long way to go yet tho ... GL all

    Hello.

I’ve had shoulder surgery on both shoulders, with the left shoulder also requiring biceps surgery too.

    A bit of history.

Around 6 years ago i had a motorbike accident, hurting both shoulders.

I tried rest first, didn’t help.

I than started having physio, for a few month, didn’t really help.

I than started getting steroid injection, now this was fantastic at first. The first few injection lasted months and month. Than the next few injection didn’t last as long, until the injection didn’t really work anymore. This all went on for a year or two with injection on both shoulder, but the right shoulder was a lot worst pain than the left

My local told me he wouldn’t give me anymore injection as I had too many. He told me to see a surgeon. Now after getting pestered by my misses I finally went and booked to a surgeon.

Make sure you do your research for surgeon.

The first thing the surgeon asked me to was was a few basic test, lifting arm up with thumb up and also lifting arm up with thumb down, arm to side up, arm behind. This was to see what hurt me and what motions I was weak in.

Surgeon told me he believed I had a rotator cuff tear & he told me I had to get both X-ray and MIR to confirm.

Test came back showing I had a small tear in my right shoulder rotator cuff.

Surgeon said I needed surgery to repair, So i booked in for surgery on my right shoulder and had it done.

After surgery the surgeon told me he removed a large bone spur on my shoulder. This bone spur was rubbing on my rotator cuff, casing it to tear slightly. Both issues repaired.

After a few weeks (3-4) in a sling and many months (4-6) having physio my right shoulder was back to normal. But it did take around a year or a bit less to really get all the strength back again.

    Fantastic!!

But during the time of recovering on my right shoulder, with lifting everything on my left side. My left shoulder started getting worst. This time I also had pain in my left bicep too.

I started getting a fair few injection on my left shoulder again, but like what happen on my right, these injection started great but over time they didn’t last as long.

I think around a year or a year and a half later, i had to see the Surgeon again to find out what was wrong with my left shoulder. X-ray and MIR didn’t show too much. But MIR did show a slight tear in my left bicep.

Surgery was booked in my left shoulder.

After surgery the surgeon told me i had slightly torn my left bicep and also had a bone spur on my left shoulder too.

    Both issues repair.

Once again, after a few week in a sling and many month having physio my left shoulder is back to normal (well this did take 3/4 of a year)

If i may recommend to anyone with shoulder issues.

    1. Rest first off to see if this helps.

    2. If you decide to get injection and this help but then the pain come back, DONT waste your time with getting more and more injection. In the long run the injections won’t repair the problem, but I CAN make the problem worst.

    3. GO and see a surgeon (Honestly, I would recommend this option FIRST) instead of wasting your time and money on physio and injections.

***Please be aware, X-ray and MIR are good at seeing some problems, but they don’t show everything wrong inside your shoulder.

Don’t be scared with having surgery.

If you get the surgery sooner rather than later, the surgery won’t be as bad. (If you have a rotator cuff tear, overtime the tear becomes larger and the surgery to repair the tear is greater with the recovery longer.

Who knows, you main shoulder problem could just be a bone spur. (This surgery isn’t that had to repair. It isn’t that long to recover.)

If you get the bone spur removed before it starts subbing on the rotor cuff, it will cause a lot less issues down the track.

Latest update Feb 7th , 3 months into chiro treatment ( practically skinted me lol ! ) but i am truly happy at the way i feel. I took 2 400mg inbuprofens this week and thats it ...No more sharp nerve pains am lifting very light weights vertically ( 2 kg ) to strengthen ligaments and muscles as i have lost a lot of muscle on my right arm.

Overall tho chiro has been fantastic , from being a complete skeptic i am now a convert and will go once a month for maintenance now. I have received fantastic advice and obviously still ongoing advice from my chiro practicioner . Treat it early and get icing when u get an injury dont leave it and think it will heal on its own , know your body you know when you've injured something badly get good medical treatment and ice your injuries.

My shoulder will never be back to 100% he has admitted that but it twill make 90% of movement without pain ...that i can live with ( after leaving that injury for 4 years it had degenerated so much i can understand he cannot fully repair it ) .

I asked him about an Mri last week he says i dont need one but he can get me one done privately at a good rate but he is 100% sure i dont need an operation . he would actually now tell me not to have one as i would be at step 1 again ...to me that sounds depressing..

On the whole tho i am happy with my treatment and where i am movement wize , it's still ongoing next visit in 2 weeks more ice and light light weights to re-strengthen those muscles..

Best of luck to all Galvanized
