Shoulder pain....anyone heal?

Posted , 5 users are following.

I have a type 2 slap tear. Doctors said they cannot do surgery because it's not big.

I feel on the shoulder in July, had a frozen shoulder unfroze in August, I have been doing PT for 5 weeks. I have pain almost constantly, plus my other arm is starting to hurt because I have to use it more.

I'm feel hopeless and depressed. It's been 1 year since slap tear, 2 month since fall, 5 weeks since unfroze.

I have tendinitis and bursitis in my shoulder.

I just want some hope. Has anyone had relief from PT?

My PT said he has seen patients make full recovery.

Have you gone in for a second opinion?   I'm thinking of course PT will say that to keep you coming.   If it hasn't helped yet, you might want to try other options.

Hi! I've seen an orthopedic surgeon who said they can't do anything for me because my tear isn't big and my pain is from impingement syndrome tendinitis and bursitis and not the tear.

Exactly, and that includes a new PT!!  PT's have different areas of specialty.  Different styles.  One size does not fit all!!!   Nicole, remember, posture posture posture is critical too!! and pack that shoulder in ice!!!

    Hi

My situation is a little different but still similar. My scapula is broken in half and its right in between needing and not needing surgery. My left arm has been pretty much useless. Anytime I want to use it I have to pick it up with my other arm and put it where I want it, like putting it to my keyboard to type. The pain is consistent all day long BUT...

I have been doing my own PT three times (at least) a day. For my PT, I attempt to move my arm without the help of my other arm until it hurts, then I push it a little more. I strongly believe that in order to grow/progress I have to push through the pain. I have to make my body do something it doesnt want to do so I can do things I currently cant do. It is very painful but I have made a lot of progress in a short period of time. The hardest part of all of this has been the psychological fight. The challenge to keep my mind focused on recovery not on the worst possible outcome.

You probably dont follow motorcycle racing but I would recommend watching this short video (3mins) about Ian Hutchinson. Very very inspiring. He was told he would lose his leg, and if that didnt happen of course never walk, or never ever ride a motorcycle, and of course never ever ever race again. He did the impossible and recovered and keeps winning the most difficult race in the world.

    Stay focused, stay focused.

    Hi Nicole,

I can imagine what your going through.Have you been referred to a orthopaedic team?, ideally one who specializes in shoulders.I imagine you have had a x ray if your Gp is saying you have a large tear. What did he mean surgery would not help ?.Is he saying it is irreparable. How much ROM have you got.?. My advise to you is not to leave it ask for a referral to the appropriate team,so as to gain a definate diagnosis.

Good luck to you,let us know how you get on.

      Hi Susy

I have had 2 MRIs done and it is a stage II slap tear so not a terrible tear. My pain is from the impingement syndrome. I've seen a orthopedic surgeon who said there is nothing he can do for me.

My PT said it will take 6 months to heal. He is a great PT. it's just so hard to see this ever ending.

I feel like I'd have more hope if I knew someone who got better

ME!!!  I HAVE HAD THE WORSE CRAP WITH MY LEFT SHOULDER look at my posts/discussions and I HAVE RECOVERED from it all in nine months...still strengthening on my own at the moment.  I needed a break from PT after two surgeries, firing one PT-who ripped one of my repairs off its anchor 5/11/17 requiring another surgery 6/2/17  AHHHHHHH and I found the best PT around for my second recovery/rehab...AWESOME and pain-free!!!  Fast healing!!! YOU CAN DO IT TOO!!!!

Unfortunately for my situation no matter what i do will not improve my particular problem. After nearly 3 years 2 Surgeries including the first which was a Hemi-Arthroplasty months of physio.i have not improved. In fact since the last surgery my pain and disability is worse.I have no Rom.I need assistance with daily tasks etc etc.I am in constant pain.Unfortunately the first orthopaedic team i was under decided to treat my # Humerus conservately meaning physiotherapy only. I also had tears to my rotater cuffs. After weeks and weeks of pain the physiotherapist had to cease with the appointments. The consultant decided to refer me to another specialist for another opinion. It was decided i should have a Hemiarthroplasty. This was carried out 9 months after the accident which i now no was to late as the damage had been done. After 1st surgery physio started again but after 2 months i was having no improvement of Rom. X. Rays showed That the greater tuberorosity had migrated posteriorly and united to the posterior part of the humeral head. This resulted in more damage to what was left of my Supraspinatus. I have no Supraspinatus at all.  I am now left with no rom, constant pain. I am unable to reach up to my forehead, wash my hair.My life has completely changed .i cannot swim, wash my own hair etc etc.My husband helps me constantly. The last resort for me is a Reverse shoulder replacement, which will not give me any more ROM but will alleviate a lot of  the pain or to attend the pain clinic. This operation i have been told is bigger than the last two surgeries put together.I have seen another Surgeon for a second opinion on that operation and he does not recommend it for me. I have looked into grafting but you need something to graft onto.So that is my scenario. I am an ex trained nurse which has given me a lot of confidence to question things and all i am saying to anybody reading this is yes stay positive but question if you are worried about your situation.Always ask for a 2nd opinion if you are getting nowhere, and look for and enquire about somebody who specializes shoulders All i have heard over the past 3 yrs is how complex shoulders are.Good luck to everybody.Stay positive.

UGH!!!  Miserable outcome on the moment for you.  Lots of frustration and disappointment.  Lots of pain and suffering.  DO NOT LET IT SUCK YOU INTO DARKNESS.  Okay, how about a tendon graft, e.g., bridge technique? Extracelluar matrix? Human dermal allograft? Patch augmentation?  What can you do legally?  Have you spoken with anyone for personal injury, malpractice?  The more I read your post, the angrier I get... someone needs to be held accountable for your care and these outcomes, i.e., diminished quality of life, lost wages, pain, and suffering, minimal if any recovery...do not let them off the hook.  If in the end, nothing can be done...find a doctor and pt who specializes in your situation.  They are out there.  I am sorry for your suffering and frustration. Do what you can to manage the pain.  ICE and use heat.  Supraspinatus is a lynchpin tendon if indeed you cannot move forward...rehab pt or just go to OT.  YOU WILL HEAL and YOU WILL FEEL BETTER AT SOME POINT.  DO NOT GET SUCKED INTO THE DARKNESS...  GOD BLESS YOU!!!!

OKay.  First, no matter what is currently happening, remember this is temporary and yes, you will heal.  Secondly, ask around your neighborhood for recommendations for a different PT!!  Sometimes a change in the PT makes a WHOLE lot of difference!!  (3)  ARE YOU ICING? IF NOT WHY??  PACK YOUR SHOULDER IN ICE as often as you can.  (4) Dig deep, really deep you are going to have to in order to climb out of this hole.  Take control and get it done.  YOU CAN DO IT!!!  Keep asking us for questions.  We will offer what we can...take control.  Fix your posture too...you must drop the shoulder and pull the shoulder blades back more often than you think!!!  KEEP YOU CHIN UP AND PACK THAT SHOULDER IN ICE!!!  YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!

YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!  it is the queen of mind f##king!!!!!  High/low, high/low...cry when you must then grab the reigns and take control.  YOU CAN DO IT!!!  We can all manage our recoveries with or without positive outcomes.  Wallow in the ditch or find what will work and get it done.  KEEP YOUR CHIN UP  YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!
