Hi all, not sure if this discussion is still going on as the last post was a few months ago. I just discovered the forum though, have read all the comments on the discussion and just wanted to briefly add my experiences.
I am 61 and a bit over 2 years ago I was diagnosed with multi-nodular goitre, as a result of which the endocrinologist I was seeing (apparently one of the best) said the thyroid had to come out. Consequently I had a thyroidectomy and have been on thyroxine since then - at the moment Eutroxsig 75mcg though I started on 100mcg. After a while, as a result of a blood test, 100mcg was found to be too much, so about a year ago this was reduced to the present 75mcg.
I was so interested to read everybody's symptoms and have realised that I have been experiencing some of them over the past several months - well, probably more like a year. Most notably, weight gain (bloating and particularly expansion of my stomach area), almost unbearable increase in sweating in hot weather and as noted on one of the posts, a kind of tightness or lump in the throat area. The weight gain and sweating bother me more than anything.
Anyway, I just recently had another blood test and my doctor (the GP) has said I need to increase the dosage to 100mcg on alternate days, i.e. one day 75 and the next 100. I'm just interested to know if anyone else takes thyroxine like this and whether, with the dosage increase, any symptoms you were experiencing improved. Also, how is everyone on this discussion going now - a year or several months later?

I am 47. I was put on levo last Feb, trying to find the right dosage until August when I decided to reduce dosage in order to stop meds as it created so many bad effects without helping symptoms, one of which was bloated tummy and weight gain.
I'm currently on vits and thyrosine. However I must state my hypothyroid is minimal, or so it seems, hard to judge with hashimotos. Only time will tell but I've no more bloated tummy, no weight gain, no feeling hungry all the time, no palpitations, I could continue
Each person is different and reacts different to each drug. Well worth it to seek a second or even third opinion. I went to at least 5 dr's before I found one who could actually hear me.
It shouldn't be this hard. But well worth it to persevere. X

It does seem hard to get it right. I guess I just expected the dosage to be right now after 2 years which is obviously not the case. I'm a bit relieved that the dosage will be increased though because with a bit of luck, that might help to right some of the negative symptoms I've been experiencing, so I'll definitely persevere!

Hi I'm currently on 125mcg of levothyroxine but recently I haven't been taking the correct amount at the correct time and I've got cold feeling even though it's warm in the house, sweating when hardly doing anything, lack of appetite and not feeling full after eating, not sleeping at night and was wandering if I started to take the correct dose at the right time would my symptoms improve.
Many thanks

Yes, all these are symptoms of hypothyroidism which is a very serious medical condition if not treated. If you can, you need to take the dose of thyrixine you've been prescribed.
I was wondering why you haven't been taking it properly? Is it a problem of money? Getting hold of the medication? Or poor memory meaning you forget to take it? Or something else. If you read up on hypothyroidism you will find that it affects metabolism and your ability to get nutrients from the food you eat. It is essential you take the medication if at all possible.

Hi Barbara
I just have a bad memory when it comes to taking my medication but I'm trying my hardest to take it at the right time.
I recently switched to trying to take it before I go to bed but I don't feel it's having any effect so I may go back to taking it in the morning.

Guess what? Poor memory is a symptom of hypothyroidism too! To remember I leave myself messages on, say, the fridge door, and I use the calendar and I set reminders on mey phone, and I sometimes write it on my hand as well! I also have a 7 day pill container (it has compartments for every day of the week) as I found I often couldn't remember whether I had taken it or not. Thus way I could check. Hope these ideas are of use.

Hi I'm Margaret I'm a 62 yr lady in a wheelchair with many physical disabilities and I was born with congenital hypothyroid and hip displasure, I've got a problem with chemical allergies to thyroid hormone, I was unable to take thyroxine , and had itching red skin mouth ulceration, spasms and like. Electric shock in my brain, my heart rate went quite fast, bp 190/89.
And voice was not there it felt my throat on fire, and swelling of lips.
My specialist ( un named to protect him, also I cannot disclose my gps name. Had a new very low dose of natural thyroid hormone in capsule with cellulose but same reactions. My GP took me off capsule for almost a month, but restarted me we are trying me on half the dose of 12.8 but spasms in my body once again and pain in my head.

Hi, Two options spring to mind. One is ThyroGold which is a bovine natural desiccated thyroid. I am currently taking this. One can take it by pulling the capsule apart and tipping straight into one's mouth. This avoids the problem of being allergic to anything the capsule is made from. It is classed as a nutritional supplememt so one can buy it off the internet without a prescription. Your GP cannot prescribe it on the NHS.
The second option is liquid thyroxine. I tried one type but swelled up. I then did a 'challenge test' on the NHS and found I am ok with the brand TEVA. This is my back up if I ever have problems with ThyroGold. Good luck, I hope one of these works for you.
