I know this post is older but I am so scared and frustrated. Here is a current list of my crazy symptoms below. I have shared them, when these "events" happen, with both my endocrinologist and my GP. I see a thereputic massage practitioner twice a month which has helped with the anxiety and breathing. My GP has twice suggested I begin anti depressants but so many side effects are associated, no suicidal thoughts and I am honestly not depressed. I'm just scared. No reason why these happen and yet when they do I can't function.

I was on synthroid for years. A doctor changed me to Tirosint (same drug, a gel capsule) and I did better. My insurance stopped paying for it so two months ago she switched me back to synthroid 100mg with only 1/2 tablet on Sundays.

My endocrinologist says these are not thyroid symptoms yet I read so many similar stories on thyroid forums. I am at a loss. Here they are. No wonder the docs look at me like I am crazy.

Last two days-Symptoms the whole combo

Heartburn now includes into stomach into chest wakes me up after a couple of hours sleep feel burn in my throat

    Sweating

    when I wake up

Feel numb on side where I was sleeping like foot and hand feel asleep goes away as soon as I move it.

Feel the blood flow and hear heart pounding in my ears

Some wheezing and coughing last few days

    Panic when it awakens me

Scared to take antacid as it says "when accompanied by lightheadedness or wheezing "

    Can't stay asleep

When really bad the coldness goes to shoulders and back

Harder time getting deep breath when it first happens

    Occasionally ache in lower back

Never pain more like a coldness then hands sweat.

    Coldness goes down arms

Super cold but not quite chills but a bit shaky nose and face cold.

    Tired (from waking up)

    Get overheated

Then cold icy hands but sweaty feet and palms.

Then hear heart pounding in my ears.

Slight wheeze is last almost like a respiratory cold feels cold to lungs.

Notice also a pain and stiffness in neck on right side. Could something be amiss with past neck surgery? Sometimes feel a tiny rush when I move my neck feel it into sinuses.

Another weird symptom is the "fear"- symptoms escalate if I see something on tv that is scary like high places etc. If I'm in the middle of a "spell".

Then tea rest and warmth and the "spell" passes. I will have a period of these then can go several months without any. Last time was Christmas when I had stomach virus. This time was after a bout of diarrhoea after eating a bad salad or pizza. When the spell hits I panic.

    Thoughts- hormonal?

    Blood sugar?

    Food related?

    Thyroid meds too high?

Too much or too little vitamin D?

    Neck or spine?

Hi Karen, I could not tolerate the Eutroxic thryoid medication any longer, so I stopped taking it six weeks ago.   This was the second time I had tried to stay on the medication, and I lasted a few weeks, but the seriously negative impacts the side effects had on my life made it just not worth continuing with it.  I don't think I have ever felt so out of control, depressed, over-anxious, and just like being a stranger in my own body and mind.    I have decided to live with whatever the consequences are of an under-active thryoid (Hashimoto's) and just try to stay healthy my own way.  My husband and I eat good healthy meals, I exercise, and try and keep a positive attitude (not always easy in this crazy world!).   Hopefully medical research may reveal new ways of treating thyroid conditions.    In the meantime, I can only emphasise with what you are going through, and hope that  you will be able to find your way through this.  As mentioned, I couldn't take the awfulness any longer, so I am now medication-free.   It took several weeks for me to feel the effects were leaving my system, but I feel 100% happier and calmer since stopping the pills.   Take care, and please feel free to contact me again any time.  Warmest regards,  Helen

Hi Helen, if you are hypothyroid and not just borderline, the result of not taking a thyroid replacement is serious illness and death. It's like a diabetic needs insulin. The side effects you describe sound like those of hypothyroidism. It is best to start on a low dose and build up slowly so your body has time to adapt and absorb the medication. Unfortunately doctors don't usually prescribe this way.

Sorry I meant the side effects sound like hyperthyroidism (not hypothyroidism) - autocorrect and I didn't notice.

Yes.. I agree, medication is a must.  I know the side effects are a bit difficult at first, but they will go away.  With the side effects you describe, when taking your thyroid medication, it sounded like me, even starting at the standadrd 25mcg and very slowly working my up, I felt so jittery and anxious that I couldn't even drink my morning coffee anymore.  Well, I continued to take my meds as perscribed and I would say, after about 6 months of my dose being continually raised, it was like a flip switched and I actually started to feel good!  My dose was raises so slowly that it took a year to work up to 100 mcg.  As yourself, I had the same exact thoughs on how can I live like this, I cannot take this medication forever, with it making me feel this bad...ect.  But I pushed through, because eventually, you're body is slowly going to change, sometimes fast too, and you are going to realize that you now, feel worse without medication, then with the mediction side effects.  I would also say, that sometimes, the meds don't work for everyone.  There are natural alternatives, just google.  But, just please don't give up.  Your body will just continue to eat away at your thyroid, till there's nothing left.  You will then regret it.

I am on 125 microgram of thyroxin and I sweat terribly. It drips off my face in my eyes and I go extremely hot all over especially my face annd chest,. I also have an enormous appetite im hungry almost all the time, I hate the this way I feel, what can be done about thisit.

Sounds like your dose of thyroxinr is too high. See your doctor & get a blood test. Rule of thumb is 1.7mcg thyroxine per kg of bodyweight - this though is if your thyroid is completely defunct, you'll need less if you still have a partially working thyroid.

Hello!  First of all, I’m sorry about the difficulty you are having with this process.  So many drs are poorly trained when it comes to the thyroid and how to treat it.

I’ve gone through a similar reaction and the stomachache led to nausea than vomiting.

Turns out (although the dr that was prescribing then told me it was impossible, he’d never heard of such a thing!) that this was my reaction to all synthetic thyroid meds.  I’d been on Armor thyroid for years successfully- no

problems at all - and using the naturally created l-thyroxine occasionally when my balance needs a little tweaking.  I know (REALLY!) what a pain it is to try and find a competent dr who will actually listen to you but it’s your one and only life and NO ONE ELSE IS GOING TO DO IT FOR YOU!

All the best to you & Merry Christmas!

It sounds as though you had an intolerance to one or more of the fillers in the synthetic medication..

I agree with Sweet Melissa it dies sound that you might be allergic/intolerant to one or more of the fillers. One candidate might be corn (aka maize) as its in all the synthetic thyroxine tablets, but not the liquid thyroxine I know because I became intolerant to corn. In my case it made me itch.

I spent many years keeping my UAT under control with Vitamins and Minerals. I struggle to take medication of any kind and was worried about the possible side effects regarding bones through taking Thyroxine. I had none of the usual main symptoms connected with UAT.

My GP who only really had my best interests at heart was worried when I strayed over borderline about 18 months ago, with my blood test results. She agreed to send me to an Endocronologist and after waiting many months for an appointment I got to see him a year ago. He looked at all my blood test results and said I am sub-clinical with no need for medication at all. Just have regular blood tests and carry on as I am. I was delighted with this as he was a very well respected doctor. He said up to 25% of people can’t tolerate any form of Thyroxine and it can make symptoms worse . I could have been put on a drug for life and who knows how it would have affected me.

Hi Chitra, I am sorry to hear about the difficulties you are experiencing.   I know a lot of the conversation thread have previously not agreed with my actions regarding my own experiences with the thyroid medication I was put onto 18 months ago, but ceasing the medication entirely was my only option to end the total hideousness of the side effects.  I tried twice to stay on the medication, but the effects were intolerable.  I made the decision to tackle the situation myself by re-jigging my diet, physical activity, and general lifestyle, without it becoming a spartan regime.  18 months later I am fit, healthy, having so far already lost, by gentle and gradual weight loss program, 6 and a half kilos.  I have regular maintainence exercise, without beating myself to death on the treadmill like I used to.   My husband and I eat well and healthily, and can even enjoy our glass or two of red wine.   I believe my thyroid spike, which necessitated my seeking medical advice, was partly due to my age (mid sixties) and also contributed to by a on-going period of personal stress due to deaths in the family, my husband requiring surgery, and other issues that life throws at all of us from time to time.   I have resolved to try to stay positive and healthy, and believe this  is doing me more good than the medication which totally desconstructed my life.   I am not a health professional so I would not tell anyone to cease their medication.  That is up to them.  All I know is, I feel 100% improved and happier than I did 18 months ago.  Best wishes for the future.
