Sigmoid Colon Removed for Diverticulitis

Posted , 43 users are following.

I had elective surgery in March 2011 to remove my sigmoid colon which contained a mass of problematic diverticulae. I was told by medical staff that at the age of 46 it was unusual to see so much! However, because I have always enjoyed a healthy diet, it was agreed that my condition was very likely due to excessive stress. Has anyone else been advised of the same?

    Hello, Maddi,

?I have  been researching lower left side pain

?I have many diverticulae, but not "it is."  just a lot of pouches. My gastro in Lake Success , LI, NY just does many colonoscopies but does NOT address my nagging lower left side pain that is impacting my joy of life and get up and go.  Pinch pain lower left side, I presume sigmoid colon.  I dream of some doc finding the spot hurting me and getting it "gone.."     Has your spouse or yourself gotten good listening and good care from a Long I. doc that you might recommend to me?  I have NO bleeding, no diahr, no real constipation...

?This has been going on since I went into ER at LIJ for left side pain and they INSTEAD removed my right side appendix!  Even going into operation, I told them, PLEASE NOTE the pain is NOT on my right side,no, but my LEFT.  alack and alas...here we are 4 years later.  If my left side could just feel like my right side, all would be fine, I THINK.  Any advice greatly appreciated.  I think I read enuf of yoru notes that both YOUR HUSB AND YOU GOT  help from a long is. doc?   God bless, Margaret Mary

?I have to resume my school job in two weeks and have fear of the left side pain.  I have addressed this all summer with another colonscopy, exrays of hips, visits to ob,gyn, etc. etc.     not progressed after so many talks wtih varied docs.   I do not know how to show up at a surgeon and not be considered a nut.  ONLY one time was I told some people have SUBclinical, NONacute diverticular disease that causes them pain and symptoms wihouth fever, without real infeciton, but WITH PAIN. that is me.    thanks for helping others

I am a mom of 2 big kids who need me, ages 15 and 22 and I am 57 and or Irish descent. I live near JFK Airport in Queens, NY

I had that done last year because my colon had attached itself to my bladder giving me a 24/7 UTI. I have always avoided processed foods, ate little meat, I am convinced it is hereditary. Eating at McDonalds every day != diverticulitis if it were 1/2 of America would have it.

Yes, I too had a colovesical fistula with constant pain and discomfort from a UTI and constant antibiotics such as nitrofurantoin that only slightly ameliorated the symptoms.

I always avoided processed food and ate plenty of dietary fibre and never suffered from constipation. The cause of diverticular disease is still a mystery.

Also it did upset my bowel movements, I never even though about them before, now I find myself constipated a lot. I had never been constipated in my life before the surgery. I will take whatever I have over a 24/7 UTI though.

Sorry to hear that your sigmoid colon removal has caused you to be constipated. It hasn't affected me in that way. I continue to eat plenty of dietary fibre and I don't think I have had any constipation. But I have to pass bowel movements more frequently than before.
