Sigmoid removal

Posted , 4 users are following.

Hello I am new to this site and have just been diagnosed with cancer of the sigmoid and due to have it removed on the 16th of this month, it has not spread but the lymph nodes are swelled but not burst, the surgeon tells me he will be removing them along with the sigmoid. Over the last couple of days I am getting bright red blood when I go to the loo, is the tumour bleeding and is it ok to wait until I have my operation

Hi there, please realise that any comments are based on personal experience, not any medical training. Having said that, It was a huge loss of bright red blood that sent me to my GP, from then, via scans/chemoradiotherapy/more chemo till finally surgery was  15 months, so I think a week or so is not going to be a problem. I would make sure you mention it to them though. Do you have a contact number for your surgeons Specialist nurse? If so I would phone & tell her, she can pass it to the surgeon. Hope all goes well.

Hi, my blood loss isn't on a big scale and it's not all the time, do you think I should still go?

      Hi Laura

Yes if only to put your mind at ease then you will not be worrying , do it for your children. X X

Hi Laura, yes definitely. It will put your mind at rest, and there has to be a cause for it, which needs sorting. Good luck.

I have an appointment on Monday but I will monitor the blood etc between now and then, how long do you normally need to wait for a colonoscopy? With Xmas coming up I'd prefer if I didn't have to wait until after Xmas

      Hi Laura.

You have seen blood in your stools, Laura you only need to see it once that's enough, you need to have your colonoscopy ASAP that's providing your GP sends you for one I know it's worrying but you owe it to yourself and your children to sort it now. I have had my pre op today and my surgery is next Friday and it can't come quick enough xx

How long from seeing your GP did you have your colonoscopy? And how long did you have to wait for results?

I'm certain they will just do a stool sample test first before a colonoscopy, but having bowel cancer in my family I would think would mean I have a higher percentage so they wouldn't refuse a colonoscopy??,

Yes they may do a stool sample first, but you don't have to wait long for a colonoscopy it depends on your GP, Laura bite the bullet and go for it believe me you will feel a whole lot better xc

I'm taking your advice David, I'm doing the absolute right thing , if it's nothing then that's great but if it is serious then hopefully like you they will catch it early so it can by surgically removed.

My dad had a good few cm of his colon removed and while it took a few weeks to recover he was in the best hands and is now in remission - will you be home for Xmas?
