Silly question but what did you sit in after you came home?

My hubby has been loaned a high backed chair by community equipment. Its very unforgiving and tried to make it more comfy with a memory foam pillow. He still says its uncomfortable and wants to go back to his own seat which is a sofa with electric button that reclines back and raises the feet. It only has one arm but he says he can use his stick. I am a bit concerned as it's a bit low. He is 12 days post op. What do others think based on your own experience. Thank you.

Well its up to him I suppose but I too have a horrible hard loan chair that I have to sit in and look at my lovely comfy sofa but I figure for the sake of a few weeks if it means I heal quicker then I'll have to put up with it. I'm 4 wks post op and see consultant in a week and a half and I'm hoping hell say I can sit in sofa then.

    Hi Pauline

I have a chair with electric reclining for feet and also to lay back.  I brought a 4 inch raised cushion, and a V cushion, this is now the correct height. It does have two arms so can get up quite easy.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi Pauline

I have been using the armchair that matches our 2 sofas but have added an extra seat cushion from one of the sofas to ensure the seat height is right.

Not sure exactly what the sofa is like but if your husband prefers to use it why not add an extra cushion under the seat cushion ( the memory foam one?) to ensure a good seat height and then if there is room add a few cushions next to him for more stability eg making the seat width more like an armchair. If that makes sense!

I bought what I call an old persons chair and have put a memory foam cushion on it . It is the right height comfortable but not relaxing . Unfortunately it is something we all have to put up with for a few weeks .

    Pauline,

I agree with the other posters. Just put an extra cushion or pillow on your husbands chair to adjust the height and so he doesn't sink too low.

    Hi Pauline

    I had the loan of achair from the hospital for 6 weeks {I only had 2 settees}

No chair......it's straight backed, 2 arms, looks dreadful but I thought its only for 6 weeks and they have it at the correct height so I'll go by their rules for 6 weeks

    Hi Pauline,

I was in the same quandry, so I bought a leather riser recliner that perfectly matches my sofa, it's very comfortable, and for the first few weeks I used a memory foam pillow that was thick at the bum end lol and narrow towards the front of the chair, sort of like a wedge effect, it worked great, plus the riser part was so convenient for getting up, I'm now 3 months post opp and waiting for my 2nd thr next month, so I will definitely be useing the same method again,

hope this helps, wishing your hubby a speedy recovery,

    regards,

    Lynne.

I'm almost 3 months out since my THR and I still sit on a cushion that I took from another couch.  It gives me the ability to sit on the end of my couch, next to the arm allowing me to rise easily, and stretch out straight other times on the couch.  I found a recliner too unforgiving for me.  Also still using raised toilet seats...One of these weeks I'll wean myself off these, but not in any rush.

Hi Nancy that's a good idea about the sofa I think I will give it a try. Interesting about the raised toilet seat too as I was wondering when you can stop using them (I'm 1month post op). Although I think everything is going to seem very low to begin with when seating (chairs and loos) can go back to normal!

Good luck to you, Linnet.  I've very leggy (6 ft tall), so getting up and down can be problemmatic at times these days.  Some low chairs and toilets look like they are on the floor now to me. My doctor says to just base it all on my comfort level, in terms of eliminating these raised seats, some take many, many months to do so. I have to talk with him about the fact that I do still also have some pain, which I understand can take many months for some people to stop having.  I'm hopeful!

My doctor sent me home with a book concerning various procedures that one must follow post op.  It says you are to use chairs with firm straight seats and arms...no recliners or rocking chairs.  You knees must not be higher than your hip. It says when you stand in front of a chair, the seat should be at least 1-2 Inches higher than knee height. It also says if you need to raise the height of the chair, you can place a firm cushion on the seat.  The chair must have arms in order for one to lower and raise yourself from the chair.

i was thinking of buying a firm square of foam to place on my chair as it is not high enough.

      Hi there

I'm 3 weeks today post op for a r/h THR.

My consultant and nurse say the same; no recliners and hips always well above knees when sitting down. I have a similar hi backed chair which we loaned from our local Red Criss centre in Surrey, UK. Ugly but does the trick!

      Really enjoy the posts!

Hello Pauline. I am two weeks post op. I use a cushion riser on my leather armchair and move it onto settee when I feel like change! My surgeon is very relaxed about things apart from twisting and bending down and I have to say my progress is good. He even said it was not necessary to raise toilet, just be careful lowering on and getting up. I think it's called enhanced recovery and is working.I can only say you need to follow the advice given by your health care team as they all seem to have their own guidelines.

    Sending good wishes

Is it possible to have the sofa raised? I did that to mine and only had 1 arm and used my crutches to get up but it was fine. The nurses weren't too impressed about me on a sofa but I was comfortable and happy and still sitting in correct position too. As long as you don't kean forward or sit lower than your knee height you will be fine.
