SIMVASTATIN HELL ?

Posted , 50 users are following.

I have been taking Simvastatin for over two years. During this time I have got progressively worse. Started with tingling and pins and needles in hands and fingers, sore sole of the feet and a little bit of joint stiffness, lumpy legs, severe lethargy, tireness and irritability.

NOW I have muscle wastage of the shoulder muscle, severe joint pain in spine, chest, hips, wrists and fingers. I have lost the grip and strength in my left hand, finding it difficult and clumsy to use. My sight is progressively getting worse, I feel as if I,m looking through a slight fog. My memory loss was becoming a real problem. Diarrohea, chronic muscle spasms - I was beginning to think I was going to die.

I have only just been made aware that the cause could be Simvastin - stopped taking them 5 days ago and I am feeling a little better having good days and bad days.

My concern is that if these problems have been caused by Simvastatin - it looks like they could be irreversable!

Oh yes, I'm on Simvastatin given by my doctor in Singapore am have been taking for a year. My fingers ache on both hands and it getting worse by the day. When I see my doctor she brushed off the problem and recommended if I need a change in another form of statin. I play the saxophone and it's painful to struggle with my fingers. I also noticed that I'm forgetting a lot of things recently.

Good morning.... And it sounds like you have indeed got problems with your Simvastatin. I suggest that you are developing peripheral neuropathy - which is a common side effect of any form of statin therpy.

If I were you and never mind what your doctor says  -

I WOULD STOP THE STATINS for a few weeks and see how it goes.

I would also take coenzyme Q 10 in the form of ubiquinol if you can find it and take that at the same time as this should expedite your recovery...ok?

In the meantime forget statins ...we've all been there on this forum and we all know what it's like... It can be poison to some people... No kidding!

All the very best and please let us know how you get on Cheers!

Thanks very much. Will get off statin for a few days. But I am sure that statin caused my finger aches

I have just watched the second documentary called STATIN NATION II on DVD. This has been a few years in the making. It so clearly shows how statins simply don't prevent heart attacks or strokes in primary/preventative use. It shows how all research and all positive results are conducted by the industry itself. These positive results, along with the acceptance of statin use by doctors and practically everyone else is quite simply the result of distortion, statistical tricks and lies. Watch it, please! You'll never have another doubt and never swallow another statin again.

Thank you very much for posting this infor Jackofall - the more publicity this gets the better for us all.  We should know from past catastrophic experiences (eg Thalidomide) that pharmaceutical companies are most definitely not the people to trust and it's always just bottom line profit influencing policy.  We are however at their mercy when they use their financial power to brainwash our medical profession.  Shame on doctors for risking our health just to keep their heads below the parapets, or are our GP's just living in a bubble and not seeing or reading this stuff?

Hear hear... well said!  It is time that more people realised the dangers of these dreadful drugs and the tricks that are involved by Big Pharma.... I keep saying it but they have a lot to answer for.

All doctors including consultants and physicians have been brainwashed by the lure of more loot into believing what they say ....and it is totally reprehensible.

I chatted yesterday in the lunch line of the hospital where I had my heart operation 2 years ago, with the cardiologist who did my angiogram for that op, providing me with an excellent 20 second video of what was going on inside my chest, so I could know exactly why I would need the operation.  We shook hands and first words out of my mouth were "I'm still kicking!" and that lit up his face.

I did say tho, that the statins are not treating me well because of my severely patchy memory that happens only when taking them.  I mean really badly patchy, I could not remember the last name yesterday of a long term customer of mine, only that his name was Jim.  For 2 days before that I had tried unsuccessfully to remember the primary appointment I had made for yesterday and failed, and finally it came to me and it was with Jim.  His last name escaped me tho, and try as I would it would not come to me.  I could have looked it up on my phone, but no, I wanted to grab it from my mind!  It finally came to me 3 hours later.  That is not acceptable to me.  Who knows what is simply not occurring to me properly???

He says that there is a drug that does what the statins do for cholesterol, but you only need a small fraction of it compared to the quantity you need to take daily with the statins. It is rosuvastatin, generic for Crestor.  He says a tiny dose of it has the same effectiveness as the comparatively massive doses of the statins, one compared to the other.

I will be asking his partner, my primary in cardiology, to put me on it at our next consultation.  They were sitting at the same table when I left the cafeteria and work in the same office, so I am sure my cardiologist has already been apprised of that by the Dr. I was talking with, who is his partner in the cardiology office.

      Hi mrbob

i found your post most interesting, I have always been informed that Rosuvastatin generic for Ctester is basically the same as all statins??

There are currently a few statins on the market and the only difference is suppliers and cost of drugs.

i know Simvastatin is the cheapest and therefore the most widely prescribed statin, but Rouvastatin is no different than the rest as far as I'm aware.

Im no medical professional so I certainly wouldn't say your doctor is wrong but I would like to say please don't expect memory side effect to disappear because you've changed away from statins as this isn't the case.

you may find that Rouvastatin suits you better and therefore your side effects subside but please be vigilante if side effect continues. Perhaps a discussion with doctors if Rouvastatin doesn't help is a slightly lower dose if possible.

good luck and keep us posted if Rouvastatin does help as many who are suffering from side effects may find it suitable for them.

    Sonya -

I know and I agree!  The FDA said all statins work basically the same way.  I told this to my Dr.  Yet he said that the significantly lower dose of rosuvostatin vs. the other statins should be considered.  He did not say he's had experience with it not having side effects, in fact none of my Dr's have once mentioned side effects except to say that every drug has them.  So maybe there's a reason for that - maybe liability or something.

Fact is rosuvastatin is a statin like the others, but with a significantly smaller dosage, like 1/5-1/10 the dose per day vs. the other statins.  I'll know more when I get it.  At present I am going to stay on the Atorvastatin until I have my next appt. with my primary cardiologist, after I turn in the heart monitor I am presently wearing, and will keep wearing till the 48 hours is up.  At that time I will request a new appt. with him and will get these questions answered.

So nothing is certain yet.  I simply see a chance for a little light at the end of this tunnel.  I suggest anybody who has to take statins at all check out this new info with their medical professional and see if it might help them.  I'll check back in here when I know more -

I also want a second lipids panel before I stop taking the Atorvastatin.  I want to see graphically how much less cholesterol is in me from the lipid panel I took a couple of months ago, after a year of not having any statins in my system.  So I will get that done as well, before I go off the Atorvastatin.

I finally got the results yesterday of the latest lipids panel, so I could compare it to the one taken several months ago.

Original stats after a year off of them are listed: After a year off of them, then Currently as of April 29 2015 (after 2 months ON them), then Targets/Ideal (this is American of course):

    Total                                 146                          99                            125-200

    HDL                                    40                          44                                  >40

    LDL                                     77                          38                                <130 ratio=""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  3.7=""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  ="" 2.3=""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""><5.0 triglicerides=""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  143=""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  85=""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""  =""><150

hdl went up 4 points to its target minimum, which is a slight improvement, but ldl was cut roughly in half. way too low imho, when your cholesterol is not out of line to begin with.  imho being put on them "just in case" is a formula for disaster over the long term, which is what he wanted me to do.  his words were, "for the rest of your life".

this is on protocol from my cardiologist after my triple bypass/aortic valve replacement in june 2012, and obviously made my total go way under the target minimum!  starved my brain of essential fats to work with and send signals in.  not sure what it did to my dendrites up there.

i did not experience the bad things others here have experienced physically, but if your brain does not have the fats it needs to be sending the proper signals to the rest of your body, those organs get starved of the impulses they need to function properly, like a pinched nerve cured by a chiropractor adjusting your bones and getting rid of it so the nerve can resume sending signals freely, like it was designed to do.  "subluxation"!  (only took me 20 seconds to come up with that word, which was escaping me - my brain is definitely getting better!)

correct me if i am wrong but i think this is what happens when a person becomes diabetic - critical parts of his body do not function freely like they are supposed to because of too much unused sugar floating around in one's blood, that has not been delivered to blood cells because they are already "sufficiently satisfied", as my dad woulda called it, and the cells reject that sugar so it stays in the blood, where it's not supposed to be.  this is from all the straight sugar being eaten and not enough exercise to burn it off and make the cells hungry again, and relieve the blood of those sugars.  that sugar stays in the blood, where it should not be, and eventually causes problems elsewhere in the body.  domino effects happen.  (this is roughly how my gp described diabetes to me at last visit, as i am 1 tick over the line on being pre-diabetes, so i needed that counseling.)

i figure that fully explains my memory losses, with critical fats my brain needs to function being cut in half.  who knows what long term effects coulda happened to my body and my mind had i stayed on them?  from what i have been reading here, i am totally glad to be off them!  eating whatever it takes to maintain good, non-starvation levels of cholesterol will be where it's at for this boy in this body, if changing from today's norm ever becomes necessary.  (no pills - anybody want the eight 40mg ator's that i still have left?  i'll send them to you free!)

as of now i am what my cardiologist calls "perfect".  when i read my stats off to him (from having been off of them for a year, which is way more than enough time for them to leave your body) over the phone he said, "you're perfect."  i told him that i would be going off of the statins now.  he didn't say a word.i am staying that way.  normal.   ="" hdl="" went="" up="" 4="" points="" to="" correct me if i am wrong but i think this is what happens when a person becomes diabetic - critical parts of his body do not function freely like they are supposed to because of too much unused sugar floating around in one's blood, that has not been delivered to blood cells because they are already "sufficiently satisfied", as my dad woulda called it, and the cells reject that sugar so it stays in the blood, where it's not supposed to be.  this is from all the straight sugar being eaten and not enough exercise to burn it off and make the cells hungry again, and relieve the blood of those sugars.  that sugar stays in the blood, where it should not be, and eventually causes problems elsewhere in the body.  domino effects happen.

(no pills - anybody want the eight 40mg ator's that i still have left?  i'll send them to you free!)

as of now i am what my cardiologist calls "perfect".  when i read my stats off to him (from having been off of them for a year, which is way more than enough time for them to leave your body) over the phone he said, "you're perfect."  i told him that i would be going off of the statins now.  he didn't say a word.

i am staying that way.  normal.>

I was on them for only a few weeks but four years later and i am over four stone lighter and no muscles. I take CQ10 which is the enzyme the statin attacks and magnesium. Do you have any digestive problems as there is a link with sugar and diabetes. I try to avoid sugar, which isn't easy but I don't get the exhaustion, breathlessness and muzziness when I do. From my research the problems are not reversible but ther's a lot of info out there which can help,

I had the muscle weakness, leg cramps, night sweats, and got pre-diabetes.

I am still pre-diabetic a year later but the other problems were gone within a few months. The arm Weakness took the longest. Statins are poison to me.

I have done lots of research on heart disease, cholesterol, diet.

I changed my diet no more sugar or refined carbohydrates. No processed foods, Just organic healthy foods. Not worried about my cholesterol levels. From new research it looks like docs have had it wrong for 50 years.
