sitting on floor after TKR

Hi
I am wondering if any of you out there can sit on the floor or try to? I had a PKR 3 years ago and am able to although getting up is a little chllenging as I don't want to put alot of pressure on the knee. I may be looking at a TKR and was wondering. It seems no one ever mentions that .
I have small grandchildren and one of the reasons I had the knee done was my inability to get up and down off the floor.
some day they will grow up and I guess this wont be an issue but it is now. Thank You !

Hello I had my TKR 3 months ago and my surgeon told me that I may never be able to kneel down again, he did not recommend it. It puts pressure on the joint. So I wont attempt it. My grandchildren dont have a problem with that . My neighbour however, who is 2 years TKR on both knees unfortunately falls often she is in her 70's she says the only way she gets up off the floor is to roll onto her knees to get up but it hurts her a lot and they crunch and swell. So I think take advice before trying. My surgeon says listen to your body before doing anything.

Hi
thank You for your reply although not what I wanted to hear 😦 How are you coming with the knee and recovery. Do you work ?
Your neighbor? Why is she falling so much. Is it from the knees or something else. That is awful. Feel badly for her .

I am 20 months on and can go down on my hands and knees and crawl round the floor and below tractors, but like something to hang on to when getting up as not as fit now at 75. My Surgeon said the knee was to be used and was very pleased with my mobility and did say many cannot get down at all.

Hello Supertractorman
Guess that explains going under the tractors! Well good for you ! I like what the doctor said . You surely must have had to work hard at that though I imagine? So many diffrent opinions on things makes me batty LOL.
I would like to be like you though and have the ability to get up and down. I mean I dont totally put full pressure on the knee sort of use my hands to help.
Anyway thank you for the reply !

i had my first TKR 11 years ago and have never been able to kneel on it...only in an emergency. I had my 2nd one done 8 months ago hoping to be able to walk to school with my grandchildren but im waiting for patella realignment surgery. Currently my gait is off and I am very slow and it hurts my back.

hi ! Thank you for your reply. Why the patella realignment.? And what exactly do they do with that or for that?

i had a TKR in February 2016
and its been a nightmare ever since. i could walk better before.
he shoud never have done the operation. it was madness to say I can straighten your leg on the TKR side, appealing to my vamity as a woman who'd lived with that slightly bowed leg for 68 years. His stupidiy has thrown my gait all out and now Im having problems with my back x

I had a partial 12 weeks ago. I can get down on hands and knees but don't put full weight on my bad knee when I do so as it is still quite tender (feels bruised to the touch). I have almost full ROM but it hurts behind the knee if I try and kneel down completely. The first time I tried all fours / tentative kneeling was on the bed / soft surface.
I'm wondering how long the tenderness to the knee will last. The entire knee feels a bit tender / sore when I press on it.

HI Caitibean
thank you for your reply I love to hear from those that have had partials done like me. I am three years out and probably it took me a good two years to stop forgetting that I had the knee done of course recently now I’m having a new issue and I am waiting to see the surgeon . Thinking i may now need total but trying To not self diagnosed myself.I did have a lot of relief after the partial. I am able to do stairs and walk and an able to get up and down off the floor. Are you calling your bad knee the knee that you just had the partial done on? . I’m sorry that it’s not going well for you:(

hi,
Actually, I don't think it's going that badly as I have pretty much full ROM after 12 weeks and am able to do things ok (went bodyboarding last week and have been out cycling and walking in the hills). It's just the knee still feels tender to touch and it swells and feels stiff after exercise. But I suppose it's still early days for me. Yes, I'm calling my operated side 'bad' as I don't have problems with my other knee yet.

I had PKR 19 months ago. i can't kneel on it. knee is still very painful and gets so stiff. not felt much benefit at all. other knee needs doing, but I'm purting it off. would rather wait and have TKR as i have not benefited from the partial. my surgeon said at 46 I was too young to have a full replacement!

I am also 46 and had a partial. 12 weeks in and knee is sore and often stiff. I was praying it will improve with lots of exercise etc but it worries me that you are 19 months and still having pain and stiffness. Yikes.

Hi Deb
How is the knee failing. I still have to be careful with many things that I do. I have come to the conclusion that the partial probably is not as solid as the total would have been. I am having some issues now but it seems that for several weeks I have been icing and resting and possibly my issues are from overdoing it. So sadly it just seems that even after you have this surgery you still have to continually be careful with all things you do. my other knee is bad and probably is not a candidate for a partial but would be a candidate for a total so I am babying it because I know way want to have the surgery.
Have you possibly been doing too much? And have you been still icing it and elevating it. Those are the two best things to do for a sore, swollen knee. Thank you for your reply it is nice to hear from people that have had partials done. I hope you find some relief and answers.

I had TKR 6 months ago and have been able to kneel on it for quite a while now. My surgeon said there was no reason why it couldn't be knelt on, but many don't like the sensation.
I started by trying it out on the bed first and then, very tentatively, tried the carpet. If I'm kneeling for more than a few seconds I kneel on a cushion. I wouldn't kneel on a hard floor. If I've been on my knees for a while I am aware of a sensitivity in my kneecap, but no more than that. Getting back off the floor I tend to roll onto my hands and knees and then push my bottom up into a downward dog (inverted V shape) and walk my hands back to my feet before standing up.
Before I had my knee done I couldn't kneel anyway and still managed to get up from the floor by rolling over onto hands and feet, keeping the knees just off the floor and going into the downward dog position again. It's not the most elegant way, but it works for me.

hi Lynda,
thank you for your reply. And for the description of getting up off the floor. I am glad to hear that someone is able to do that or has pushed them self to be able to do that. I am just so concerned if I have to have a total that I would not be able to get off the floor. After I had my partial I was able to do that and I did do or I am doing a similar type thing that you have described. Maybe it’s just a matter of pushing yourself to do it.
Thank you !
