Sleeping after hip replacement

Posted , 114 users are following.

I'm 44 years old and had a hip replacement 10 days ago, I'm having real difficulty sleeping on my back . My recovery has been good , my wound is healing well ,I'm walking on 1 crutch now and doing exercises regularly. I'm just so tired from not sleeping at night and find that in napping in the day . Any ideas on sleeping .

RACH I WAS THE SAME AS YOU BUT I NOW SEEM TO HAVE TRAINED MYSELF TO LIE ON MY BACK AND AM ASTOUNDED THAT IT SEEMS TO HAVE HELPED MY BACK!!! I HAD TROUBE WITH SWELLING - ITS BECAUSE WE ARE YOUNGER = THE OLDER ONES RECOVER FASTER.....THATS A FACT!!!! BECAUSE THEY DONT EXPECT MUCH. I GOT AN UNCEMENTED HIP AND SOCKET - DID YOU GET HAT AT ALL - IT LASTS LONGER AND KNITS IN WITH YOUR OWN LIGAMENTS - TAKES A BIT LONGER TO HEAL.

Hi Anne i had an uncemented thr 2 weeks ago. I don't see my sureon for follow up vist until the 6th week. I can't manage a crutch so have a wheelie walker. I'm still leaning quite heavily on it and walking is still painful and slow. Cannot put full weight on operated leg when walking but am standing alone fine. I'm doing a few laps around the lounge room and kitchen and doing the lying down exercises and homing into the bench ones 4 times a day. I have no one to measure my progress on. From your experience do you think i am doing ok. Thanks for any feedback

That's interesting anne, I have a uncemented hip and socket. Knew they used it if possible in younger people but didn't realise it takes longer to heal.

Yes Delina, Im 58, I saw it on internet its slightly different than the standard one, some say you shouldn't weight bear for 3 days have you noticed some stabbing pains and twitches and a bit more swelling? its normal, I think its a more expensive hip - my surgeon had to order mine in!!!!

I have a ceramic hip joint, as surgeon I have uses it in younger people as supposes to last longer for activity. I was weight bearing straight away, only in hospital for 2 days so think I've hit the tiredness now as pushed myself quickly , being young x

10 weeks down the line I still have discomfort around my wound site although the actual scar is fine no problem healing. I suppose it's sensible and cost effective in the long term to give us young things longer lasting hips. We should use them well.

I did that too, ive been walking a mile a day and exercising and my hip just said..pack it it I need a rest now!!!! I just did not get support at home at all so did not know what I was suppose to do.

I didn't get support at home either and like both of you, I just carried on as I thought best. But yes, you're hip and body know best and soon let you know if you overdo it.

I'm taking part in a trial for a new version of the Furlong prosthesis. It has a much shorter stem, and the head is pink ceramic! The joint nurse specialist said they should last me out! I'm 63 , and they are very expensive compared to the other ones. Apparently the ache you can get in the thigh is the bone fusing with the stem.

Thank you for sharing this info, it has put my mind at rest as almost two weeks after my THR I find my thigh is stiff and aching. I was fitted a ceramic hip so I guess it's similar to yours....although I see yours was done a year ago....how's it going now a year on?

      Regards

Good luck with the trial Judi.

16 days since op and hubby has just taken me for a drive & walk in local park. Took both crutches, but I found I could walk part of the way with only 'good leg' crutch . Things are looking up at last.

Very brave doing the trial judi. Good luck.

Well done marg, it makes a big difference using only one crutch, even for a while.

It's good to feel you're progressing isn't it? But don't be discouraged if you pay for it tomorrow. Just keep trucking! I'm 4 weeks and try to do 30 minutes walking a day. Trouble is the weather has been so awful we've been walking round different supermarkets and it is costing a fortune!.
