Sleeping after hip replacement

I'm 44 years old and had a hip replacement 10 days ago, I'm having real difficulty sleeping on my back . My recovery has been good , my wound is healing well ,I'm walking on 1 crutch now and doing exercises regularly. I'm just so tired from not sleeping at night and find that in napping in the day . Any ideas on sleeping .

I am six weeks post op and finally sleeping in bed. I have been sleeping in my recliner since my surgery. Some is it is more comfortable and you don't have to worry about turning over wrong in your sleep. I moved back to my bed a couple of days ago and am pretty comfortable. I sleep with a very small pillow between my legs I am so used to sleeping on my side in bed this helps, on my back I have to have a pillow under my legs. I am walking with  no aids but I am still a little wobbly. A few weeks from now you will be doing a lot better sleeping in bed. Hang in there!!

Hi, new to this group. Been active with knee replacement group. So much help in learning th ropes, as it were. The consensus that we aren't given very much information or help for recovery. So now, I'm faced with a THR in February. Looking here to learn what expect. Thanks, I advance.

I have an electric recliner which we had been wanting to purchase and finally did the week before surgery. I have been sleeping in the recliner as my bed is high and I can't find any comfortable position. The recliner goes almost all the way flat so this is good  especially since I get out of bed several, times a night for The bathroom.  The recliner does the job of getting me up. Even so I find myself sleeping in spurt of two, hours or,less and then apping during the days   Sleep is sleeepl. Liz

hi .... I am six weeks tomorrow with new hip. After a couple of painful nights when I returned home I found that using a backrest and a few thick pillows to lean back on enabled me to sleep .... I have just been lying flat on my back for the last two nights but not all night. It is still more comfortable using the backrest and pillows, I love it.  I found this info on another forum and it worked immediately, just prop yourself up at night and see whether this works.  After about 3 weeks I adjusted the slant of the backrest so I am not so propped up.  This relieves all the pain I had been experiencing in my operated leg. (mainly the thigh muscles right across and into the groin)

Hi, I'm, four and a half weeks post THR. I've had an awful time on my back too. The pillows helped quite a bit but the most glorious was finally getting onto my side. Approved by doc and PT, of course. I've read both ways-on the non-surgical hip and on the surgical side. The main thing is to keep the knees from not crossing over, remain parallel with pillow between. I can do the surgical side but not for long as it gets uncomfortable on the hip. But at least it's a change from being flat out. Good luck.

    Hi

im new to this site, im having replacement surgery in 1 week.  They said I'd be in the hospital for 2-3 days, then either rehab or home.

i don't want to go to rehab , mainly because my husband just had rotator cuff surgery  fell on black ice at work, his surgery was 6 days ago, he's starting to get around good, but being 70 he is use to being taken care of. Now I'm not planning on doing the work I just want to be there in case he has any questions.

did any of you have home health care come in ?

i didn't get to go to the class (that was the day my husband had his surgery), so I have to find answers on the web.

did any have leg length problems?

    kind of nervous

    thanks,

Hi Linda , you will be pretty self sufficient when you go home

You won’t be allowed to bend over more than 90•but you are able to wash yourself and move around on your crutches

You could make some meals to freeze so you don’t have to bend down.

Your given exercises to do at home which are quite easy.

Good luck for your op, it was the best thing I’ve had done. No pain at all in that hip now ❤️

I was the same. I still need the other one doing but I’m only 45 and I feel like I’ve got my life back. The surgery is no where near as bad as I thought it was going to be. The area is painful but not that arthretic dull ache that you have now. ❤️

Most people I spoke too were exactly the same!

I would wake with pain in my lower back that woke me up 😩

I bought a wedge for the first 5 weeks so I wasn’t flat and after that I bought a special pillow ( slumber pillow) off the internet that Velcro’s around your middle so the pillow dosnt slip while your asleep.

It’s not forever and it’s all worth it. It starts to get easier about 10 weeks in xx

Hi. I had my hip op on Wednesday and today is Sunday.  I am 58.  I am having trouble sleeping it is getting worse as time goes on.  Swelling is up to my knee and at the moment I am unable to put a pillow under. Unless someone is in the house as I live by myself.   I can’t sit for long and do have to get up and walk around for a bit.    Sleep depravitie is the worse    I have tried the exercise but with everything so swollen I have found it hard but now reading this I know I must persevere and stop being a softie.  I was let go after day of operation think another day and n I might have learnt a bit more and could have received some more advice.   It seems to be on here though.  I am going for my first stroll to the end of the road tomorrow see if helps knock me out a bit longer.  I only hope I get back to a normal sleeping pattern soon. Miss my sleep.

Hello Ann , it’s seems like it’s never going to end at the moment but it will and you’ll feel much better.

Have you been given enough medication ? You shouldn’t be suffering too much.

I had swelling when after I did my exercises but that went as the day wore on.

Just take naps as and when you feel.

      Take care ❤️
