SLIDING HIATUS HERNIA SYMPTOMS AND QUESTIONS

Hi I'm new to this site, just recently been diagnosed with a 4cm sliding hiatus hernia after suffering for 2 years with horrendous chest, neck, shoulder and back pain! been to A&E a least 5 times this year thinking I was having heart problems! had an endoscopy 4 weeks ago and was diagnosed! so now what? I was sent home with no advise whatsoever. been on all the PPI's for the last 15 years as I suffer with GERD and IBS! I feel bloated all the time, I burp, fart, feel sick and light headed and now I get a pulsating throb from my tummy through my chest into my throat cry If I eat the wrong thing it feels like I got a tennis ball stuck behind my sternum, really fed up with this now. I won't go the operation route, it's not got a good success rate! so it's maintenance, put the head of my bed on two blocks 8inches high, given up gluten and dairy and all spicy foods eat 3 hours before I got to bed and have a swig of gaviscon as a night cap! I take a multi vitamin and magnesium supplements. the next step is stop smoking and drinking red wine rolleyes what else can I do? the omeprazole makes me feel crap, so I've gone back to ranitidine. any advise would seriously be welcomed.........

Poor you. I can't put my finger on any food causing the pain, but do find that if I go for long periods of not eating it seems worse. Also worse when sitting down. When I first had my IBS symptoms I couldn't keep anything down. Was sick all the time and lost loads of weight. I think my recent probs are stress related as issues at work and I am covering for a sick colleague plus having taken on other colleague's responsibilities. I need to de-stress. Hope you feel better soon.

this is just a theory but switching to a diet where you eat smaller meals and more of them everyday might help avoid problems and allow healing as well as helping you to lose weight which also might help..I put on weight recently and don't rememeber having the same pains when i was a lightweight

Teresa, Its a known fact that stress and anxiety cause the body to produce more acid! I seem to have

managed to keep my hernia under some sort of control. Stopped taking proton pump inhibitors on my doctor's advise, she is adamant that they a causing me major side effects, like achey joints, muscle spasms, dizziness, fatigue and a whole host of stuff. I just take gaviscon and avoid all trigger food's...

Thanks Eddie. Just knowing there are others with similar symptoms stops me thinking I a) have a heart problem and b) going mad.

I thought I was going mad until I read the stories on here. My symptoms are pretty much the same as some I read, pains in my back and chest ,feeling like I am going to have a heart attack.. It puts my mind at rest to hear that I am not the only one feeling like this (really relate to the not being able to wear my bra).

Hi guys, well I've been off PPI's for three months, Nightmare! my doctors, rheumatologist, neurologist

insisted I stopped taking them...for the past 5 years I've gradually become really unwell with symptoms

of Lupus, Sticky blood and various other autoimmune deceases, joint and muscle pain, CFS, fibromyalgia!

my blood anti body's are through the roof. I've also developed food intolerances and severe numbness in

left side of face, neck arm and leg. been checked for everything, had Mri scans of brain, heart checks

every blood test known to man, NOTHING! there telling me its side effects of long term use of PPI's!

so they put me on baby aspirin and Gaviscon.....I'm starting to feel like my old self, however my hiatus

hernia is giving me major grief. chest pain and discomfort all the time, sensations of being impaled through the centre of chest radiating through between my shoulder blades, stiff neck and the feeling I've got

something stuck in my throat! and the most vile taste in my mouth. So it seems I'm stuck between the devil and deep sea! OMG what am I going to do!

Eddie10 I googled my symptoms - pain in the left shoulder blade, left side of my chest, burping, gas and heart brain and am so glad that I got this feed.  my paternal grandmother had a hiatal hernia and these symptoms fit me to a t.  I am going to try some prilosec and call my doctor tom.!  Thank you.

About this most recent post.  When I was 20 - I am now 36, i had muscle aches, nausea, light headedness, etc.  I was diagnosed with CFS and Fibromyalgia as well and spent most of my time in bed and was very depressed.  When I could, I advocated for CFS and Fibromyalgia and was interviewed for a column in a big newspaper about CFS.  A woman who read that article called me and insisted I see a Lyme Disease specialist.  I told her I had been tested.  She assured me that she had lived the same way i did for 11 years before she finally saw a Lyme Specialist..not just a Dr. who knew little about Lyme.  Sure enough, I traveled 4 hours - 3 months and intensive blood tests later I was diagnosed with Chronic Lyme Disease.  Please seek a Lyme specialist...it can't hurt.  I am 85% back to the person i was but will always have symptoms..and I get sick VERY easily.  I catch some weird stuff.

I wish you luck in your journey and again, thank you for your help.

I too have a hiatus hernia which is giving me a lot of pain at the moment. I've just been prescribed with a larger dose of omeprazole so I'm hoping it will help. I was interested in what you wrote about Lyme Disease, as I had it two years ago. I was given 6 weeks antibiotics and told this would get rid of it. Its now two years on and I have never really felt well since.

I have found too many doctors don't know anything and would rather be pill pushers. I've had two surgeries in three months. With the first surgery it was unexpected but glad it was done.  I had started to complain about back aches, doctors told me it was my spine. No it wasn't, my bowels were in my back. A hysterectomy was done, since this surgery I don't have the severe back problems.  Second surgery was for gallbladder, one stone (1 inch) was creating a lot of problems.  But I still have other on going health issues, it's trying to get doctors to believe you and do anything.

Hi.   In despair at how I feel and hoping someone can thow some light on whats happening to me.   I'm 59 now and dont want to live for what ever time I have feeling so poorly.   I have been suffering with all kinds of worsening symptoms since 1981 - numbness, acid, aches, stomach problems, tinnnitus, sore throat, incredable tiredeness.    I have had all sorts of testes and surgery and. like others on this site, have developed food intolernaces.    I have had an operation on an Hiatus Hernia, and take omperprazoli twice per day as well as antiacids.      I have read about Lyme desease beofore and thought my symptoms mirror many of what are listed.   How do you go about finding a specialist in this area just in case

      Hi John,

i too too thought it might be Lyme for a while. Had a usual blood test at my go surgery and also paid to have a different screening privately at a small clinic in Winchester by the only expert on lames in the UK.  All came back clear.  Have you spoken to your go about the side effects of long term antacid and PPi use at all? I would suggest asking for a blood test for vitamin and mineral deficiency. Taking these medicines stops you body being able to absorb nutrients properly and the side effects of this can be severe, especially a lack of b and d vitamins which can cause extreme fatigue, muscle and joint pain etc etc,

Hi Maria, I know it's been a while three years but I am really interested in how you are doing. I was diagnosed with CFS in 2002 so had it a long time. I recently just by chance & having a MRI scan on my head been diagnosed with Hypothyroidism & Hashimoto thyrioditus as well as last year a mild form of Crohns & Ulcerative Colitis, two Hiatus Hernias & a stomach ulcer. I believe that my CFS was misdiagnosed due to nothing ever being ruled out & you can not diagnose on just symptoms alone. I have only just started last night to have such a bad bout of being sick & now it feels like I have something stuck in my throat & my throats been stripped. Seeing the Hospital tomorrow about the Colitis & Crohns so hoping they can help with this as it's the last thing I need with all the auto immune diseases.

Hi Guys. I have had a sliding hiatus hernia for the last 2 years. It has taken me all this time to work out what works for me. Anyone with chest pains, acid issues and really bad gas causing other pain that feels like your heart is relocating outside your body can give this a try.

For 2 weeks 1) Only drink water - No fizzy drinks or booze. 2) Dont eat pizza, chocolate, tomatoes, colly, onions, bread, biscuits 3) Eat 2 Kiwi fruit each day. 3) NO Booze at all ( cant stress that enough). 4) Im on 30mg proton pump inhibitors 20mg wasnt enough. Give it a try - Hopefully this will help.
