SLIDING HIATUS HERNIA SYMPTOMS AND QUESTIONS

Hi I'm new to this site, just recently been diagnosed with a 4cm sliding hiatus hernia after suffering for 2 years with horrendous chest, neck, shoulder and back pain! been to A&E a least 5 times this year thinking I was having heart problems! had an endoscopy 4 weeks ago and was diagnosed! so now what? I was sent home with no advise whatsoever. been on all the PPI's for the last 15 years as I suffer with GERD and IBS! I feel bloated all the time, I burp, fart, feel sick and light headed and now I get a pulsating throb from my tummy through my chest into my throat cry If I eat the wrong thing it feels like I got a tennis ball stuck behind my sternum, really fed up with this now. I won't go the operation route, it's not got a good success rate! so it's maintenance, put the head of my bed on two blocks 8inches high, given up gluten and dairy and all spicy foods eat 3 hours before I got to bed and have a swig of gaviscon as a night cap! I take a multi vitamin and magnesium supplements. the next step is stop smoking and drinking red wine rolleyes what else can I do? the omeprazole makes me feel crap, so I've gone back to ranitidine. any advise would seriously be welcomed.........

Hi, everyone:  I have a huge hiatal hernia, but I don't know the dimentions....I take a Nexium each morning as soon as I wake up...If I feel one of my attacks coming on, I take three antacids and then lie on my left side until I can feel the pain going away...It can be quite embarrasing if you are in a restaurant or public place.  The key to my preventing such attack is to only eat a few bites at a time...let it digest some, and then another few bites...the minute you feel a burning or aching sensation, stop eating immediately, and take antacid...I keep them on me at all times...If an attack does come on, it is a good 30 minutes before it eases up...feels just like a heart attack....hope this helps...

Eddie I do not know if you still need help with high levels of stomach acid but if you do maybe you could try aloe vera juice. I buy mine at Publix for roughly $6.99 a gallon. It healed a stomach ulcer I had a coupke years ago.  I use it now when acod reflux strikes.  I had tried omeprazole but the side effects were awful. I call aloe vera juice liquid gold!   It is amazing.

I am sorry David. I do not have that answer as I greatly dislike coconut. I have heard it does great things for people and hope if you choose to try it that it helps you also!

    Hi Eddie10

i have recently switched to taking 2tsp of raw unfiltered natural apple cider vinegar and 1 teaspoon raw natural honey in 8oz of warm water in the morning about a half hour before eating. And I have had no sign of my reflux! No more Prilosec! Also it can be taken before each meal as well and as much as a tablespoon of acv in each 8oz but still 1tsp of honey each time. The benefits are wonderful with this drink. I highly recommend all on this thread read up on it! Just google benefits of ACV

Hello, How are you feeling now?  I've been dealing with the same things for a year now. Drs. think I'm crazy. I know something is wrong.  Did you get checked for abdominal anurysm?  Your Aorta?  I have three large 2 inch stomach ulcers in which they want to do surgery to take out part of stomach and re route it plus my liver is narrowed, the bile ducts are they want to widen them as well.  I also have this lump end of sternum. I do throw up a lot though. Can't eat. Lost 100 lbs. over the past year. I weigh 97 lbs today.  I take Carafate which helps but makes me sick to stomach, PPI's Protonix taking those too.  Zantac, Pepto.  I think my problems came from abusing narcotic pain meds such as Oxycontins and Percocets, plus I use to take about 20 excedrins per day also every day for over 3 yrs. straight also. NSAIDS reak havoc on your insides.  If I don't take NSAIDS I feel better but regular tylenol doesn't help with pain or headaches.  UGH.  I don't know what to do. Surgery or not???  I know it's been a while since you posted this but I need help and was wondering what you did for yurself?  Thanks.

Contact me through here or email or facebook.I feel like I am actively dying and there's nothing I can do ugh.  Tired of being sick.  Tired of this pain, lump too. Can't walk right, talk right, sit right, lay right etc....Lost!

I too am suffering just the same. I have a 6cm hernia which blights my life. I have managed for many years on lanzoprazole but this is no longer working. Have tried several other melds with little or no improvement. Latest advice is that I will have to live with it. I am like you and have all manner of distressing symptoms. I too would value any constructive advice on how to manage this and have some sort of normality

Hi I am a newbie to all of this and currently going through the system. I go next week to see a gastrointestinal doc to see what the next course of action is. I recently started with what may be a hiatus hernia. I started having shallow burps which didnt seem deep enough to clear what i felt was a huge balloon of wind in my upper tummy. I seem to be gulping air down when i drink and have a pain under my left rib which comes and goes. I get pain that radiates around to my left shoulder/back that i had thought could be gallstones but apparantly they are on the left. I cannot eat a lot at once before feeling stuffed. There are certain foods which i find hard to get down and it feels stuck. My oesophagus also feels sore when i swallow. I get excess saliva and although i dont have acid burn. The doctor i saw put the wind up me and started talking throat cancer because foods get stuck and ovarian cancer because it manifests itself in strange ways. To say i am actually looking forward to an endoscopy is an understatement!!!

Hi Carole...that is really kind of you. I have started a diary of foods eaten and reactions to see if l can find a pattern. I haven't had this for long but already fed up of feeling like l am. When l read others posts l think its going to be down to finding ways of coping. Foods that l can and can't eat etc. Does everyone have to have the endoscopy to have a diagnosis? Also would it be possible that my oesophagus has an ulcer on it as it feels so raw. Xx
