SLIDING HIATUS HERNIA SYMPTOMS AND QUESTIONS

Hi I'm new to this site, just recently been diagnosed with a 4cm sliding hiatus hernia after suffering for 2 years with horrendous chest, neck, shoulder and back pain! been to A&E a least 5 times this year thinking I was having heart problems! had an endoscopy 4 weeks ago and was diagnosed! so now what? I was sent home with no advise whatsoever. been on all the PPI's for the last 15 years as I suffer with GERD and IBS! I feel bloated all the time, I burp, fart, feel sick and light headed and now I get a pulsating throb from my tummy through my chest into my throat cry If I eat the wrong thing it feels like I got a tennis ball stuck behind my sternum, really fed up with this now. I won't go the operation route, it's not got a good success rate! so it's maintenance, put the head of my bed on two blocks 8inches high, given up gluten and dairy and all spicy foods eat 3 hours before I got to bed and have a swig of gaviscon as a night cap! I take a multi vitamin and magnesium supplements. the next step is stop smoking and drinking red wine rolleyes what else can I do? the omeprazole makes me feel crap, so I've gone back to ranitidine. any advise would seriously be welcomed.........

    Hi everyone

I came across this thread today after suffering much of the same symptoms as you all and feel relieved in the one hand that there are others with and I am not a nut job but depressed at the thought of this never going away! I am a 36 yr old male and have had chest back and shoulder pain as you all describe, bloating, burping, a feeling of something stuck in my throat and an occasional stabbing pain just below the sternum for around 4 years now. My doctor has finally agreed to an endoscopy but says it is a hh.

The symptoms seem to come and stay for days or weeks at what I would call an elevated level and then subside to something more tolerable until the next flare up. The stress of the symptoms is worse for me than the actual symptoms if that makes sense....if I know there is nothing seriously wrong with me then I would worry less about myself and my daughter missing out because of my health and am sure he symptoms would be less??

Look, I know this is an old thread but thought I would post as I feel that everyone thinks I'm a bloody head case as every blood test, xray, helicobacter test Hascombe back normal.

Listen, if you drank pop every week ? As I used to multiple times a week? If u were going to specifically McDonald's, once or mire a week? I believe we have been poisoned with allergic reactions to high fructose corn syrup. How did people learn they were lactose intolerant? A decade of violent sickness after crap was added to milk. Well this choke on food crap wasnt till the late 90s when hfcs was added to every jelly, every fruit juice, and most breads. All sodas. This crap is the cigarette industry of 2015 in scale. They have ruined us. And no....moderate eating isnt the answer because its in simple things like bread. McDonald's and coke were the forerunners of it. It is addictive. Hence long lines at McDonald's...yet low quality product, poor customer service, and crazy pricing. I suppose we wont get answers till a class action where a single lawyer gets millions and we each get a check for 18 DOLLARS

Hi healthmom, what are the morning exercises to which you refer? I've only ever heard of a technique you can try to use which you do lying down on your back, knees bent and you push under and down below your ribcage with your fingertips in a bid to push your herniated stomach back below the diaphragm. I've tried to follow this technique to no avail. I have pretty much the same symptoms as Eddie 10 and am waiting to go for a barium swallow and also an ultrasound to rule out gallbladder issues.

Actually I have a question and could not find where to go to ask questions.

I just had hiatal hernia, valve repair, and old scar tissue removed. I had a sliding hiatal hernia( the most common). I never had any pain from it just GERD, acid reflux, and was constantly spitting up mucus(cannot find a doctor yet that can explain why the mucus thing). But had anyone else ever experienced spitting up mucus with this problem? My lungs are fine.

Hi Clarice, I was diagnosed with an ulcer and hiatal hernia just over 3 yrs ago. I got the ulcer sorted but still got pain and sickness with the hernia. I got so sick of the slow progress with the NHS I went private and saw a gasto surgeon an had a pile of tests done. He said to start taking Amitriptyline (lowest dose } and that was like magic and things setled down. The surgeon said they are not quite sure how it works but does the trick in the majority of cases,  It never stopped the mucus though and every morning I have to spit out thick yuck. My GP dosnt seem particularly bothered about it, so I just carry on spitting gunge. Unfotunately the symptoms of feeling like someone has just kicked my stomache has returned and there dosnt seem to be anything to put it right apart from surgery. The problem with this is that looking at posts relating to surgery, the results are a bit hity missy. There shoul be an exclusive club for us folks!

I know this is old but how was the surgery and recovery time? Was it worth it? Thanks in advance!

I'm new to this page. Recently I've been experiencing feeling of fullness in the upper abdomen. It feels like when I eat, the food doesn't move down to my stomach, it kind of just sits there, up high. Could this be a hiatal hernia? My mom had one. Do they run in families? Thank you. I look forward to your replies.

Karen I do not know if it runs in the family or could be hereditary but that is quite possible considering it is a defect also with a hiatal hernia you you definitely have food that will sit there you have to really focus on eating small meals otherwise it will just sit up in your chest area and feels like sometimes it will never go down also will make you bloated because your food is not in your stomach digesting

    Hello eddie

i have suffering with these same feelings as you by the sounds of it.

doctor said I have acid reflux but the lansoprazole and then the omeprazole I've tried that the doctor gave me  the side affects make me feel a site worse than what I'm already feeling x

i went to my pharmacy and they said try these ranitidine  X well I've been on these for 3 days but there only 75mg twice a day not really sure if there strong enough but I'm giving them a try  the last couple of days I've been having fluttering in my stomache don't know what that could be but getting fed up with not feeling well all the time and it's making me very anxious now

      Hi Susan,

I had been going through everything you are concerned about. First of all, we all have unique body's and will experience different things. Having said that, my experience with all the "acid reflux" RX, did not help me in any way. I starting loosing my hair and my blood pressure went up to 190. Almost all the Doctors said that was unusual. So, I started reading the side effects of the acid reflux drugs. What I discovered is that it is more conman in women to have the blood pressure increase and loss of hair is conman for both female and male. If you have GERD, which I did. No matter what I ate or did not eat, I still had the same problems. My GI surgeon told me that my Hiatal Hernia caused my acid reflux. Most people think just the opposite. I have had the surgery ( repaired hernia and valve), and no more acid reflux and no more GERD, just waiting for my body to heal and of course everyone' healing time is different. I am 70 years old, so I am thinking my age does effect the healing process. Surgery was 2 months ago. I also have a strong belief in God, and faith to receive complete healing. Thank you and may your process be peaceful, because believe me, I truly understand what you are going through. Try to get a good GI specialist and a good GI surgeon. I will pray for you also.

Of course you should talk to a doctor about this but my doctor suggested that I could take RAtidine which is Zantac 150s up to 600 mg a day he says this is a common prescription amount for people who have bad acid reflux you might look into it don't forget you can also supplement with Pepcid AC or something like that they help a lot
