SLIDING HIATUS HERNIA SYMPTOMS AND QUESTIONS

Hi I'm new to this site, just recently been diagnosed with a 4cm sliding hiatus hernia after suffering for 2 years with horrendous chest, neck, shoulder and back pain! been to A&E a least 5 times this year thinking I was having heart problems! had an endoscopy 4 weeks ago and was diagnosed! so now what? I was sent home with no advise whatsoever. been on all the PPI's for the last 15 years as I suffer with GERD and IBS! I feel bloated all the time, I burp, fart, feel sick and light headed and now I get a pulsating throb from my tummy through my chest into my throat If I eat the wrong thing it feels like I got a tennis ball stuck behind my sternum, really fed up with this now. I won't go the operation route, it's not got a good success rate! so it's maintenance, put the head of my bed on two blocks 8inches high, given up gluten and dairy and all spicy foods eat 3 hours before I got to bed and have a swig of gaviscon as a night cap! I take a multi vitamin and magnesium supplements. the next step is stop smoking and drinking red wine what else can I do? the omeprazole makes me feel crap, so I've gone back to ranitidine. any advise would seriously be welcomed.........

Wow! I've learned so much in this forum and feel somewhat relieved that I am not alone with these issues.
I had my overflowing gall bladder removed several years ago. To my dismay, the intense pain in my solar plexus did not go away. That area is incredibly sensitive to touch, so much so that I can longer wear a bra. I am always aware of the sensitivity and discomfort, even if I'm not having an episode. My grandbaby can't lie on my chest and my children have to be careful when hugging me.
When I have an episode, it's as though my stomach is having a spasm. Intense, horrible pain that radiates into my shoulders and neck, accompanied by a cold sweat, nausea, and light-headedness. It only lasts about a minute and then slowly ebbs until it passes. It's horrifying and makes me feel as though I'm having a heart attack.
After much complaining to my Dr., I was finally diagnosed with hiatal hernia, but was also told I should be feeling no side effects. I have chronic reflux and jave adjusted my diet accordingly, but the pain and discomfort continues to be a daily trial. Dr's do not care. I have accepted I will have to live with this for the rest of my life, but I am only 42 and am afraid I will not be able to discern actual heart problems if they arise.
Also, I live in Texas. Medical professionals are awful here and only care about the money. Of which, I have none.

I'm sure the doctor you spoke about is a family practice doc; maybe an internist. They tend to think this is a "no big deal" issue that is swept under the rug with medication. I no longer can tolerate the pain, lack of appetite, difficulty sleeping, and nausea. Will not live the rest of my life like this. There are laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures that are available, that involve short recovery time, and are rather effective for most people. I have an appointment with a gastroenterologist in April. I hope you do the same. You will likely have to wait months for the appointment, but I know it will be worth it.

Wow! Thanks for sharing,
Im with u on the actual heart thing. As all my EKGs always show heart attack, they sent me back to the hospital juz for this once. N gave me the nitro n the abmbulance n did a Cath in ER asap!
I'm glad to have found this forum n hope to find answers.
I've been thinking all along I have an auto immune disease?
Wish functional medicine was affordable. Maybe they will become available. To all n insurance will cover them soon as all these people being cured come to the front.
Thank u, Tina

Hi, Eddie,
I'm hear for advise as well. Found another article on hear gonna share with u hope it helps.
I'm gonna check into an ENT too...as she finally saw one. But seems not much they can do for us.
In going thru all the things u say n she says...but different diagnois. Crazy...
I know functional medicine is juz starting out. Ins don't cover...I went to one first visit n was on the news. They are good, but without insurance. I could not continue. 😢
They juz open a big one n Cleveland Ohio I believe.
These doctors go thru labs until they find what's wrong n them heal it. Unlike our doctors.
That just mask the problems temporary. Payed 500.00 n could take pay the 230.00 mthly. To find out weather bacteria, parasititic or what.
Labs are expensive. N that's a problem n itselfs. I was n ER last wk per doc orders. And doctor or ER could not figure why labs were spiked. Smdh!
We'll need send the article lady wrote:

hi,
i was diagnosed with a sliding hiatus hernia 2 years ago. i am only 23 years old female, it started from feeling like there was a lump in my throat and i felt like i couldnt swallow properly. I felt bloated all the time and lost 2 stone and couldnt eat properly. I went to the doctors several occasions which they didnt know what it was and put it down to acid and tried me on three different types of PPI's to which there was no change. i demanded an endoscopy and 3 months later i had the appointment and was told i had the hernia. iv tried managing it myself since by taking gaviscon when it bothers me but only in the past 3 weeks i have an ache in my left shoulder blade and middle of my back all the time and most days i get a sharp pain from my back going deep into the middle of my body and feel it slightly in my chest which to then i panic and makes me feel worse.
Does anyone else suffer with the same problems?

Hi
I've had these type of symptoms for 2 years now! it's been a rollercoaster of a journey.
mine all started with an aching feeling in the left side of chest, this soon turned to a stabbing/ squeezing feeling. I had so many trips to the hospital in the first 6 months thinking I was having a heart attack. I'd have a chest xray everytime, ecg, blood tests all come back normal, must of been 12 separate occasions at least. then the stomach pains started after about 2 months, a band type feeling round my left side, couldn't eat for 3 months, lost over 3 stone. I also get really bad back pains, between left shoulder and centre of my back, also severe, burning pains in stomach and back and chest. I've had CT colonoscopy done, 2 endoscopy, ultrasounds, blood tests, CT of abdomen and chest, loads of chest xray, barium swallow test, 2 PH and manomerty tests, MRI of spine and brain. after all these tests and 2 years I finally today have more answers than I ever have. so my PH levels are really high, supposed to be 14.7 mines 21.7. also I have a sliding hiatal hernia, 6 cm. I've been diagnosed with gord. my gastroenterologist has said that he thinks all my symptoms may not be caused by this but alot of them could be. hes referred me to the surgeon I was previously under and I'm finally going to get the hernia fixed and have the nissen fundoplication done. it's crazy to read through all of these forums and see how many other people are going through this same problem. I think when you try and explain and talk to your family, friends, ect, they just dont understand how you're feeling. I sometimes think do they think I'm making it all up.
good luck to everyone on here! hopefully you all get fixed soon!

I also have a sliding hiatus hernia 6 cm and have awful problems. I don't get the stuck in your throat symptoms, but what i do get i wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.
Got told i had H pylori , did the triple therapy treatment and after that my life changed. I no longer have reflux in my throat but the burning in my stomach is another level, i have back pain just below the shoulder, makes my whole body ache and tingle , i have headaches every morning which slowly ease as the day goes on, I cant eat hardly anything so my diet is lots of veg and fruits manuka honey ,sauerkraut, nothing to acidic this doesn't help neither does dairy, caffeine or anything fatty some days are better than others, but its always there, it has flare ups, sounds mental but you learn to live with the pain and it becomes normal life after a while. My left side is tight like someone has a vice round it and my blood pressure is through the roof i've had to be put on tablets for it.
I've had 2 chest x rays as i had chest pains, been to a&e 3 times, had every blood test done you can imagine had an endoscopy had an ultra sound as well, I'm now awaiting the cat scan.
I was on 60 mg of lansoprazole , Ive reduced this down to 15mg a day, i've done this slowly not all at once as the higher dose was causing awful headaches.
I've been tested for H pylori again it came back negative but i was on the meds still and they tend hinder getting a proper result. You have to be off the PiP for 2 weeks before they can test properly which atm seems an impossible task.
Due to the pandemic i've had to put my Cat scan on hold, hopefully won't have to wait too long.
This thread has helped me no end, i've felt like i've been going mad since all these things started happening, seeing the posts from other people and the similar symptoms a lot of us have brings me comfort as also these things trigger huge anxiety issues, after all the stomach is classed as the second brain 😃.
Keep safe .

I feel bad for you! I had heard that chiropractors sometimes can push the stomach and oesophagus back where they belong. I was skeptical, but one day, after researching this online, I tried this procedure on myself. I heard and felt a pop, and there was some relief, but not complete. The golf ball in the throat sensation, and pain in the back, had decreased. Once, I had to prepare for that test, and abstain from PPI for 2 weeks. I was afraid that it would kill me to do so, but shockingly, after one day without the drug, my nausea and lack of appetite disappeared. My doctor said that because PPI's sometimes allow "bad" bacteria to thrive in your gastrointestinal tract, sometimes these drugs can actually cause nausea and diarrhoea. I had the testing to see if I was a candidate for a certain surgery here in the States, but I was not, since my stomach empties too slowly. But that's alright. My flare ups are minor now, compared with years past. I just have to live with it. Interestingly, I've seen many people in the UK sadly talk about this condition on various forums. It seems that in the US, doctors are willing to perform the various operations, rather than say, "It's just something a person has to live with."
