SLIDING HIATUS HERNIA SYMPTOMS AND QUESTIONS

Hi I'm new to this site, just recently been diagnosed with a 4cm sliding hiatus hernia after suffering for 2 years with horrendous chest, neck, shoulder and back pain! been to A&E a least 5 times this year thinking I was having heart problems! had an endoscopy 4 weeks ago and was diagnosed! so now what? I was sent home with no advise whatsoever. been on all the PPI's for the last 15 years as I suffer with GERD and IBS! I feel bloated all the time, I burp, fart, feel sick and light headed and now I get a pulsating throb from my tummy through my chest into my throat cry If I eat the wrong thing it feels like I got a tennis ball stuck behind my sternum, really fed up with this now. I won't go the operation route, it's not got a good success rate! so it's maintenance, put the head of my bed on two blocks 8inches high, given up gluten and dairy and all spicy foods eat 3 hours before I got to bed and have a swig of gaviscon as a night cap! I take a multi vitamin and magnesium supplements. the next step is stop smoking and drinking red wine rolleyes what else can I do? the omeprazole makes me feel crap, so I've gone back to ranitidine. any advise would seriously be welcomed.........

I'm pretty ill today have been having a lot stomach issues over last 9 months, GERD is how it started, then gastritis with ulcer pain. Everything looked good for awhile no gallbladder, stomach and rib/back pain after a treatment of Prilosec, nexium, Zantac and Prevacid. I was eating all my favorite foods again, but today I ate ravioli and yes 3 pieces of bread and butter, about 1 hour later I had pain at my lower esophagus to my back, increased dizziness which I have never got rid of the whole time I've been ill.

I took several things which helped, went to bed and just got up I feel ill I've been sneezing, have cold chills,  no temp 98.8, and my bladder has been hurting plus urinating a lot but took a test and have no infection of my bladder,  I think I have a cold though.

One thing that is I've been have post 2 year ovary pain on right side I have history of ovary cyst, but I'm now menopause for 2 years why would I still get cyst.

I was diagnose nose with a sliding hiatal hernia and I also was bending a lot this morning, so I don't know it seems like all my problems are full circle today.

I'm a bag of raw nerves just thinking about it all.

I too have had a really bad day! Upset stomach, rib pain , bloated and fed up with this fluttering that feels like it starts at the top of my stomach and flutters into my throat and I feel like i need to take a breath. As strange as it might sound its the fluttering that is making me anxious etc. The other things im aware of and have dealt with for so long but this feeling is new for the last 3 months

hi all, my god this is all sounding sooooooo familiar, I am plagued with IBS symptoms although ironically when I mention this to my consultant he is furious and says that there is no such thing as IBS!!! All of my pain is upper GI, same as you guys always resulting in rib/back pain which feels like its squeezing the life out of me, I always seem to have gastritis which is miserable, I really do try and keep my diet bland, don't drink coffee or alcohol, I try and keep chocolate etc to a minimum.  My partner knows that for me all of this is hell I feel it is stealing a large part of my life, I just don't know the answer.

Have you been tested for Celiac? It looks like you might be allergic/sensitive to gluten. Hernia symptoms aside, you mention sneezing, chills and frequent urination, which sound to me like an allergic reaction.

    Dear Eddie.

Im not a doctor but your swallowing problem could of course be a Hiatis, but it could also be a nawwowing of your food tube whch is an easy op it could be stented or a balloon could be put  in place and open up the narrowing part of the tube, i had this done many years ago.

get it looked into mate dont suffer for nothing.

as for a sliding hiatis it just means your tude slides through your diapham and forms a loop this can be stitched back in place with a small op, keyhole surgery possibly,

anyway good luck and dont suffer in silence, see a doctor at a hospital and have it checked out, i did and its caued no more trouble for over ten years now.

    Regards

    Hi E -

I don't know if you're still following this forum; my chiropractor has a manuever he does and it shifts that hernia back into the correct position and takes my symptoms away. I know this isn't the long term answer; the long-term answer is you're having these symptoms as a result of poor eating habits.

You should do a three day juice fast (vegetables - juiced not smoothies). Follow this up with a one month raw food diet. This would be the minimum amount of time to do that. After you try this for a month I'd bet money that you'd notice your symptoms are disappearing. After a month totally raw, I'd go to 85% raw and 15% cooked. Eliminate all dairy, softdrinks, crappy american food from your diet. Replace these types of foods for over a year and I bet you'll stand a good chance of totally reversing this. That's my opinion based on all the reading I've been doing - I'm not a doctor.

I have struggled with a hernia for about 5 years now. Let’s of indigestion and pain after eating. I have begun taking supplements from a company called plexus. It has cleared up my indigestion most completely and it has helped with the inflamation. I would strongly recommend it if you are looking for a natural way of handling it!

go for the op Stella, its quite simple they put you under and inset a apparatus to the point of narrowing in your esophagus and it stretches the food tube, that allows food to pass through.

if you have alternatively a sliding food tube that allows much tube through the diaphragm the doc just stitches it in place to stop it sliding you go under of course but thats no problem you wont feel a thing.

hope this puts you at ease.

      Jim.

I was so distressed after many years of eating related issues, ppi's endocopy's, trips to the a&E etc etc I (with surgeon) took the drastic surgery route and 7 weeks ago had hh repair and a Nissan fundoplication. I can honestly say that I was terrified but also desperate., now I have no reflux at all and life is heaven, also it has bought it home to me just how much pain and discomfort the hh really caused. Love and peace everyone and don't loose faith! Do keep pushing for a good consultant etc. these symptoms are so miserable.

    hi Eddie

twenty years ago I tried all these things you are trying now to alleviate your symptoms of a 4cm hiatus hernia  which means you have 4cm of stomach in your thoracic cavity which should not be there  due to the tear in your diaphragm  which  can cause severe symptoms respecting your choice not to go down the surgery route and opting for medication to alleviate your symptoms  . your diaphragm which is only a this sheet of muscle with a present 4cm tear  can tear bigger i.e 10cm  with subsequent increased symptoms and can prove more challenging for any surgeon to repair . larger tears may require a patch to strengthen the larger repair(10cm)   I hope that your symptoms improve  my reply to you was just to inform and make aware that  there are risks of the tear in your diaphragm increasing

On some days, I feel the the stomach contents hovering at some critical level, and it causes a frantic, almost painful tickle in my throat.  I cough and cough.  However, I bought one of those OTC sprays that numb up sore throats.  Now when the tickle begins, I spray my throat, and swallow the spray.  Very quickly, it stops that tickle, and I can rest for a long time.

Pizza, mexican  food, fried foods kill me.  I have found that it’s not the quality it’s tge quantity. The less I eat, the less pain I have.
