SLIDING HIATUS HERNIA SYMPTOMS AND QUESTIONS

Hi I'm new to this site, just recently been diagnosed with a 4cm sliding hiatus hernia after suffering for 2 years with horrendous chest, neck, shoulder and back pain! been to A&E a least 5 times this year thinking I was having heart problems! had an endoscopy 4 weeks ago and was diagnosed! so now what? I was sent home with no advise whatsoever. been on all the PPI's for the last 15 years as I suffer with GERD and IBS! I feel bloated all the time, I burp, fart, feel sick and light headed and now I get a pulsating throb from my tummy through my chest into my throat cry If I eat the wrong thing it feels like I got a tennis ball stuck behind my sternum, really fed up with this now. I won't go the operation route, it's not got a good success rate! so it's maintenance, put the head of my bed on two blocks 8inches high, given up gluten and dairy and all spicy foods eat 3 hours before I got to bed and have a swig of gaviscon as a night cap! I take a multi vitamin and magnesium supplements. the next step is stop smoking and drinking red wine rolleyes what else can I do? the omeprazole makes me feel crap, so I've gone back to ranitidine. any advise would seriously be welcomed.........

    Hello,

im in the US and have had these symptoms for years. I'm 60 years old and Highly allergic to Meds prescribed by any physician, and I've had scope after scope! I was told I had numerous ulcers on top of everything else. I was miserable!  I finally was encouraged to start taking a natural substance called Betaine HCL and all symptoms are gone, especially the ulcers! This has been by far the best thing I've ever tried. I now eat whatever I want and sleep without bloating or reflux! This is available at any health food store, it simply fixed my problem that doctors couldn't, all they want to do is prescribe medication! If you have any doubts, just try it, what do you have to loose? It made my life wonderful!

Hi Steve,do you have a hiatus hernia as well as acid reflux and how long were you on the betaine for or are you still on them I,ve looked them up at our local store and they come up as digestion pills containing the betaine with peppermint is that the same.hope all's well Graham

I order them from Amazon but they do sell them locally. Be sure to get Betaine HCL with Pepcin! I still take two tablets at each meal. I have NO problems and can eat whatever I want. I was allergic to prescription medications and suffered for years. Now I'm ulcer free and live normally! My hernia doesn't give me problems either. This has been amazing for me. I hope you try them and see the difference, it'll take about a week or two. Good luck, I hope you see the same improvements I did!

I am a year late for these post, but have been ill also gastritis from various things was the start, which gave me horrible pain oddly on right side back though I had kidney stones, possible hiatal hernia have pain below esophagus like golf ball if I eat the wrong food, have had acid reflux. The gastritis caused sores in my stomach. I sleep on wedge which makes my back hurt but keeps acid in stomach.  My ribs on right side had a lot of pain before I started nexium, now I'm better some but still ill.  If I miss a dose of nexium I'm back in pain. I've tried natural remedies they just do nothing now, years ago they helped now I need nexium. I've had gerd but with flares and was able to treat naturally, now nothing none of those therapies work. I'm nervous because I'm scared to eat thinking is this going to cause my golf ball pain which takes hours to relief. Obama care in America sucks they lie to you by signing you up and charging you a low monthly premium but for me they made a huge mistake and underestimated my income and now I owe them $7000 just did income taxes so I'm screwed. Better off without insurance just get fined a couple thousand. I now cannot afford a doctor.

Hi Eddie, it sounds like you have done all the minor things first i am afraid, you really do need to give up smoking, i did 5 years ago and it has helped a lot - still get discomfort but nothing like i used to get when i smoked. i have reduced my drinking too - would love to hear how you are getting along as i see it is a year since you posted

Have a large sliding hiatal hernia with all the symptoms mentioned by everyone.  Back pain, bloating once in a while heart palpitations, I think due to pressure on the vagus nerve, gas and burping.  But I also get shortness of breath which I understand is a symptom of a large hiatal hernia.  My cardiagrams are all fine.  The shortness of breath is sometimes just a split second feeling and after walking at a decent pace or climbing stairs it becomes an out of breath feeling.  At times I feel as though my stomach is up in my chest.  Does anyone have these symptoms.

Dorothy I too have large sliding hiatal hernia with constant burping, chronic cough and throat clearing, worsening shortness of breath and general nausea. Surgeon is keep to operate and use mesh but I am not sure . Is the operation and its effects - no burping, no vomiting, restricted diet etc - worth the risk? Surgeon said it would help burping and nausea but may not remove the cough.

Jane, I've heard sthe surgery is pretty uncomfortable. I  notice when I lose weight, eat small portions and don't have a drink before dinner every night which my husband and I like to do, I'm a lot better.  I have gained a lot of weight recently and that has really made my symptoms worse.  Don't know if you have that problem.  I wouldn't opt for the surgery.

    Hi Eddie

I have recently been diagnosed with a sliding hiatis hernia although I've been told its very small i have also had numerous issues going on. Quick history: 59 female, smoker,

With IBS acid reflus etc etc. Have had every xray ultrasound upper GI series test cardio stress and echo test. Am on omeprazole 20mg twice daily. No relief.

Symptoms: belching, fluttering feeling accompanied with a sense of shortness of breath. ( apparantly no issues with lungs) feeling of anxiousness or as always labelled anxiety. Sometimes that lump feeling in throat and always very phlegmy.

Lightheaded feeling just over all not well. I am not bothered my it once i fall asleep but upon shprtly wakening its there. I am at my wits end and have a dr appt this week to "again" find out.

      Hi Mystery

I too have exactly the same symptoms as you!!! It drives me mad as i am sure it is all down to a sliding hernia (same age as you) ex smoker.  Eventually after two years I was referred to a consultant that told me under no circumstances would a small hiatus hernia cause me problems!!!!  I too suffer from long periods of being lightheaded and upper GI pain (feels like my insides are stuck together) - all I have got is that he thinks it may be my gallbladder, after years I am sick of all this, you have my every sympathy.

      best regards.

Joanna I too am so fed up! The difference is I have had my gallbladder out many years ago! Last year i was having problems with my belly button and at that point they found i have a umbilical hernia.. again small but i was so sick and lost 12 pounds. The surgeon wasnt convinced that would be causing that type of discomfort but agreed to do the surgery. Well after waiting 3 months and the weight loss the discomfort was gone. I was scheduled for surgery all intervenis in and ready to go in when he came and talked to me and my husband and really didnt feel the surgery was necessary 😳. He said why cut me open etc

and the recovery time when i was feeling better. If i start eith symptoms again go see him and he will re evaluate. He thinks the weight loss definitely helped. Then i started with the other symptoms! Upper GI comfirmed sliding hiatis hernia. Having IBS i know my triggers. But this is awful. The everthing i mentioned before and front and back rib pain

is depressing just cant get a break. Im in canada so tests are readily available and covered. See what the doctor says on thursday as i will use arnold swartenager... I'M BACK
