SLIDING HIATUS HERNIA SYMPTOMS AND QUESTIONS

Hi I'm new to this site, just recently been diagnosed with a 4cm sliding hiatus hernia after suffering for 2 years with horrendous chest, neck, shoulder and back pain! been to A&E a least 5 times this year thinking I was having heart problems! had an endoscopy 4 weeks ago and was diagnosed! so now what? I was sent home with no advise whatsoever. been on all the PPI's for the last 15 years as I suffer with GERD and IBS! I feel bloated all the time, I burp, fart, feel sick and light headed and now I get a pulsating throb from my tummy through my chest into my throat If I eat the wrong thing it feels like I got a tennis ball stuck behind my sternum, really fed up with this now. I won't go the operation route, it's not got a good success rate! so it's maintenance, put the head of my bed on two blocks 8inches high, given up gluten and dairy and all spicy foods eat 3 hours before I got to bed and have a swig of gaviscon as a night cap! I take a multi vitamin and magnesium supplements. the next step is stop smoking and drinking red wine what else can I do? the omeprazole makes me feel crap, so I've gone back to ranitidine. any advise would seriously be welcomed.........

And foods don't bother me. It's medicine capsules that get stuck which starts the whole chest pain and arm pain and back pain mess, then it subsides but the other day it went on for hours. So scared to take pills now. Tablets don't get stuck, only capsules so I try to drink hot water with my pills.

I was rushed to the ER one day after eating two bites of a tuna sandwitch..the pain was under my left breast bone, and it hurt so bad that I felt it had to be a heart attack. When I got to the hospital they rain the tests and told me that I had a HUGE hiatal hernia...It must be huge because I stay full almost all the time and I can only eat about two bites of food at a time. The thing I did away with was all carbonated beverages. I drink flavored water, ice tea, lemonade, or plain water..decaf coffee, only or tea...I am on some medicine for it, but every day is the same when it comes to eating. I'm not losing any weight because my metabolism has slowed down due to starving mood. Surgery is out of the question because it is too risky for me. I have other health issues that would interefere...I hate these things and wish I could get rid of it for good. Lying on my left side helps a lot, plus a Prevised every morning...Hope this helps...

I know Carole, The pain can be unbearable. I have got to the stage that I can't eat anything without having pain. It is very frightening at times. I had to go to A&E one day, I thought I was having a heart attack.Sometimes pain starts 3hours after eating and other times, within minutes, found this odd. No logic to it. I'm having an endoscopy this afternoon, not looking forward to it, but need answers as to what's going on. I have other health issues too. Have had a battle with womb cancer, So hope i'm not facing any more. The more we worry, the more stress we have. Yes I find lying on my left side is more comfortable too........

Thank you, loretta...I pray that your biopsy comes out ok. If I eat just a little and lie down, I feel like all the food and gas comes back up into my chest as far up as my neck...I have to sit up until it gets digested some how. I can't eat enough to keep a bird alive...

I have found this forum really helpful.
I've had a sliding hiatus hernia for 11 years now.
I had my gallbladder removed about the same time.
I have had all sorts of tests.
I have been diagnosed with gastritis,
Gerd, gastroparesis and IBS.
I haven't been able to 'manage' my symptoms fully but find eating little and often helps.
Also no spicy food and alcohol.
Iam prone to anaemia and have re occurring helibacto pilori.
Like most people on here, I have awful back, stomach and neck pain.
I have ranitidine twice a day, gaviscon after each meal and buscupan.
I also have to take motilium to help digest my food.
Iam considering surgery privately.

I have a hiatal hernia as well. Dx'd several years ago by accident. Anyway now I have symptoms you are having. My endoscopy is tomorrow. I will let you know what doctor advise is. I know it sucks. Ive lost 15 lbs in a month or so because of the tennis ball feeling. .

Eddie10: I'm a 50 yr old Carpenter who suffers the same Hiatal Hernia & symptoms. Surgery is in 1 month after dealing with this since 2009. My best advice is simple...Eat Papaya Enzymes before each meal, as directed on bottle. It cured me of the heartburn, teaching my stomach to balance itself. Ancient Central American secret. Sold in health & vitamin stores and most grocers in pharmacy dept. I get mine at Wal mart pharmacy 300 for $4.
