SLIDING HIATUS HERNIA SYMPTOMS AND QUESTIONS

Hi I'm new to this site, just recently been diagnosed with a 4cm sliding hiatus hernia after suffering for 2 years with horrendous chest, neck, shoulder and back pain! been to A&E a least 5 times this year thinking I was having heart problems! had an endoscopy 4 weeks ago and was diagnosed! so now what? I was sent home with no advise whatsoever. been on all the PPI's for the last 15 years as I suffer with GERD and IBS! I feel bloated all the time, I burp, fart, feel sick and light headed and now I get a pulsating throb from my tummy through my chest into my throat cry If I eat the wrong thing it feels like I got a tennis ball stuck behind my sternum, really fed up with this now. I won't go the operation route, it's not got a good success rate! so it's maintenance, put the head of my bed on two blocks 8inches high, given up gluten and dairy and all spicy foods eat 3 hours before I got to bed and have a swig of gaviscon as a night cap! I take a multi vitamin and magnesium supplements. the next step is stop smoking and drinking red wine rolleyes what else can I do? the omeprazole makes me feel crap, so I've gone back to ranitidine. any advise would seriously be welcomed.........

Hello, I hope your feeling much better. I'm also having the same symptoms and also taking omeprazole. I went to the ER for painful burning sensation on the upper left side of my stomach and they assume it's acid reflux. Although, I can also feel a lump on the left side of my stomach underneath my chest. Sometimes it's there and sometimes it's not. I notice my left side of my stomach is slightly swollen. I'm trying to cut back on white wine. I have changed my eating habits (no spicy, no red meat, cut back on diary and so on). I have an upcoming appointment with the gastroenterologist. I'm nervous but I know it's needed.

Hi Michelle. I had a Gastroscopy over a month ago, since having this done I have lost 2 stone in weight, now weighing 7stone. I am now forcing myself to eat as I get very tired and have no energy, but my most concern is the pain I have in my back all the time. I have a less than 5cm sliding hiatus hernia. Before having the Gastroscopy I was fine, eating whatever I wished.  This has completely messed me up, I just do not know what has happened. The medication from the doctor is not helping. All I can advise to you is go back to the doctor or telephone the hospital direct. I have another doctors appointment just over a week away and I keep leaving messages with the hospital, awaiting a return call.

Omg I'm suffering from the same things. I've been driving myself crazy thinking I've got esophageal cancer or something. I'm still scared I might have it but you calmed me down a little. Have you been relieved of your pain? I know I still need to check myself out but without health insurance it's hard. I have an appointment for an endoscopy but of course the next available spot is in 3 months (are you kidding me!). Please givee some advice to calm my nerves. Thank you

Well I had an endoscopy and I had a small sliding hernia, didn't said how small, inflammation in the duodenum and small intestine possible cause by Motrin and those type and the back pain and neck didn't know could be related

Hi Aimee, do you have back pain too?

Mine all started after the gastroscopy, until then I was fine.

I have been having back pain in the middle to left side for a while and they did test for pancreas, kidneys, liver you name it . So maybe is the hernia . I did drink enough water one day and I kind of jump a step and I feel better

Aimee you can try Mastic Gum for inflamed duodenum look it up and your GI dr should have given you a size so you have a point of reference

We bought a Sleep Number split bed. I can elevate my side and that helps my reflux so much. I have a large hernia and one half to 2/3 of my stomach slides into my chest and feels terrible. CT scan showed my stomach was somewhat twisted after it slid into my chest. This is very dangerous since the twisting can cut off circulation and cause death. Saw a specialist and he said I need surgery. My brother also had reflux really bad and died last summer from esophageal cancer. Really dread surgery but afraid not to.

Hi Shirley, do you know the size of your hernia? I am trying to establish how big mine is. Do you get the back pain in your back too? Glad the bed is helping.
