SLIDING HIATUS HERNIA SYMPTOMS AND QUESTIONS

Hi I'm new to this site, just recently been diagnosed with a 4cm sliding hiatus hernia after suffering for 2 years with horrendous chest, neck, shoulder and back pain! been to A&E a least 5 times this year thinking I was having heart problems! had an endoscopy 4 weeks ago and was diagnosed! so now what? I was sent home with no advise whatsoever. been on all the PPI's for the last 15 years as I suffer with GERD and IBS! I feel bloated all the time, I burp, fart, feel sick and light headed and now I get a pulsating throb from my tummy through my chest into my throat If I eat the wrong thing it feels like I got a tennis ball stuck behind my sternum, really fed up with this now. I won't go the operation route, it's not got a good success rate! so it's maintenance, put the head of my bed on two blocks 8inches high, given up gluten and dairy and all spicy foods eat 3 hours before I got to bed and have a swig of gaviscon as a night cap! I take a multi vitamin and magnesium supplements. the next step is stop smoking and drinking red wine what else can I do? the omeprazole makes me feel crap, so I've gone back to ranitidine. any advise would seriously be welcomed.........

I am so happy to have come upon this site. I've been starting to feel alone in this. In February I was diagnosed with a sliding Hiatial hernia and it's the most painful thing I've ever experienced. Before finding it I was in and out of emergency more times than I can remember thinking I was dying of a heart attack. I was put on Prevacid. Which I didn't find help much so I went off it after three months and I'm still suffering. It seemed to go away for a couple weeks than I got back into some bad eating and drinking habits and now it's back with a vengeance. Right my my chest feels like it's caving and my hearts racing. The burning pain is enough to make me want to go to the hospital but I know they won't do anything for me. Any suggesting to help with my suffering right now?????

Have you found any relief? I'm thinking of going to a chiropractor to see if they can adjust it before is go as far as surgery

Hi Tina,
good question re Chiropracter, I think it is a very good idea, in point of fact, I lucked out and found one that understands my problem (I am also very adverse to surgery, as positive results seem to be rare.)
I have found that my HH is much less intense and to date I have only had 3 adjustments ,( I am going on a once weekly basis.)
Meanwhile, I am following the golden rules ; wait 3hrs after eating before going to bed, smaller meal portions, no heavy lifting specially after eating, a last but not least a full glass of warm water first thing in the morning followed by toe to heel lift and thumps down with arms level with shoulders, and breathing out on the down thump.....I am doing so much better., I know it will take awhile as my situation have been going on a year (possibly brewing even longer)
Keep doing all the right things until they are a habit ...and don't expect a overnight cure, it will take time.
Hope you start to feel better in time for the holidays (how PC of me, ugh!)
We have to remember not to over do theThanksgiving dinner or it's back to square one !

OK. I have been vomiting back food for over 10 years now. I have had these idiots giving me all the nexiums and prilosec crap and the throat widening, over and over. the crap didnt last a week. THEN I found that granny smith green apples worked better than nexium each night. that started my absolute distrust of ANYTHING these jerks were telling me. but I couldnt stop the choking. the acid? yes, the choking? no. THEN I was told how I have this huge Hiatus hernia thing. well I would go to the belly doc and over and over, see how my body swallows, look at the plastic model before he came in...It would seem to me, the food is getting stuck in the pouch made by the hernia, then its forced down the little ring from the stomach and esophagus. Why wouldnt it be better to address that pouch? I was always told, "oh no no, may people live with this hernia, its another problem..." NOW I am able to eat crap that I NEVER EVER could eat at all without choking. Im talking bbq...or grits...Mash potato, white rice, I can drink red colored drinks (red 40 in the drink) and yes even High Fructose corn syrup products (which I believe caused all this stuff in the first place). How did I do it? youtube. Push the hernia down with a massage technique. the massage therapists have been getting rid of those hernias for decades....BUT only ONE doctor spilled the beans that they did. So I immediately went to try it on myself, per the instructions from youtube. DO YOU KNOW I CAN EAT!?!?!? within 3 days as they said? now im not just happy...Im angry. Angry of all the times I was depressed, up late at night, embarressed in cars with friends for having to pull over and vomit....Unable to attend outside food events....THESE MONEY GRABBING AMERICAN DOCTORS AND THEIR MONEY GRABBING WAYS!!!!

Very interesting! I've dealt with all the horrible symptoms and everything else, that comes with having a Hiatus Hernia, for about 15 years. I've changed my diet, definitely no carbonation, or spicy foods, and daily dose of ranatidine, which had helped tremendously. However, I'm very interested in this technique you're talking about.
You mentioned it could be found on you tube. Could you please be a little more specific about what its listed under, or where on you tube I might find this.
Luckily, I have a great PCP ( his wife is Internal medicine) who is a great guy, very understanding, compassionate, great communication skills and open to any ideas I may bring to the table about/for my treatment.
Thanks for sharing.

Hello to all of you, I am 34 yrs old and just recently have been dealing with awful pain in my right shoulder ( which I thought I tore a muscle at first) then the pain would worsened when I moved my neck/ head a certain way, progressively it's now uncomfortable to touch my neck/throat under the Adams apple area and hurts to swallow, and I get this horrible stabbing pain around the heart and shoulder regin that stops me in my tracks! If I bend over to pick something up off the ground I have a pain in my esphogaus and I feel a constant lump in my chest/ esphogaus ?? I am not sure if it's gerd, h hernia, or what but I haven't had issues with heartburn much. I am making a dr apt tomorrow but for now I figured I would get y'all's opinion? Please don't tell me I will feel this way for the rest of my life!!! I have six children three under the age of three and don't know how I can get threw life with this constant discomfort while running after babies.... Let alone just living a pain free routine as far as swallowing saliva or movement????

Thank you for the response and I do blame the food industry for most cancer
people have these days! But I pray this ain't cancer! Today the pain ain't near as bad as the last two days. I am hoping this is just a bad case of extreme heartburn
