SLIDING HIATUS HERNIA SYMPTOMS AND QUESTIONS

Hi I'm new to this site, just recently been diagnosed with a 4cm sliding hiatus hernia after suffering for 2 years with horrendous chest, neck, shoulder and back pain! been to A&E a least 5 times this year thinking I was having heart problems! had an endoscopy 4 weeks ago and was diagnosed! so now what? I was sent home with no advise whatsoever. been on all the PPI's for the last 15 years as I suffer with GERD and IBS! I feel bloated all the time, I burp, fart, feel sick and light headed and now I get a pulsating throb from my tummy through my chest into my throat cry If I eat the wrong thing it feels like I got a tennis ball stuck behind my sternum, really fed up with this now. I won't go the operation route, it's not got a good success rate! so it's maintenance, put the head of my bed on two blocks 8inches high, given up gluten and dairy and all spicy foods eat 3 hours before I got to bed and have a swig of gaviscon as a night cap! I take a multi vitamin and magnesium supplements. the next step is stop smoking and drinking red wine rolleyes what else can I do? the omeprazole makes me feel crap, so I've gone back to ranitidine. any advise would seriously be welcomed.........

I forgot to said is very important to stop, as much as you can STRESS because alters the digestion and affects the entire body. Also I helps a lot a one or more green blends in the morning and or trough the day (like spinach - broccoli with papaya and some fruit you like with honey) and less processed and greece foods

      Hi Maria,

I see this is from over a year ago. But I was wondering if you ever figured these symptoms out? I suffered from the same debilitating pain and it turned out to be gallstones. Strange how some parts of the body can complicate and affect other parts that seem completely unrelated. Anyways, I hope you are doing better now. God bless

Yes pain in my right side of lower shoulder directly behind the pain in my chest.

The only thing that helps with the heartburn is the Omeprazole and I always have Gaviscon liquid (the tabs don't do anything for me), in fact any Heartburn liquid helps.

A lot is stress related but life is stressful no matter how hard you try not to let it affect you.

The more pain I have the more stressed I become so it is a vicious circle.....

My pain is in my back, the left shoulder blade mainly, but also I get sharp pains on the left side of my chest.....scary as never sure if it is my heart or not.

I have given up trying to wear underwired bras and stick the new soft (exercise type ones that you pull over your head).

Months go by with no symptoms then it hit me for a week or two for no reason.

I am glad that I am not going mad and hope all you out there can reduce your suffering.

    All the best

I am going through the same issues. I had my gallbladder removed last year and I seemed alright for a while. But lately, just the past couple of months, I have put on an extra 2 stones! I thought it was initially because of the contraceptive I have using, however I never had this problem before. But I always feel ill and now I have started regurgitating anything I put in my stomach, solid food to liquid. But I have to stay hydrated bc I suffer from horrible constipation if I get dehydrated. But I cannot even keep down water. It is simply unbearable. I just feel sick all the time. And I am so drowsy all day. I haven't gone to see a physician yet. I haven't even told my mum what's going on. She has too much on her plate as it is. I wonder is there anything I can do, homeopathic or anything without a trip to A&E?

    Hi,

I am not from the UK. I live in Canada, but I am going crazy and I found this forum. I was hoping if I post what's going on that someone has either experienced it, knows someone who has or maybe knows something about it. I know from a scope that I have a "small" sliding hiatus hernia, most sites say they're asymptomatic, but finding others that say they are not. I get itchy between breasts and a bit lower and it's almost like an internal itch. I also get stomach rashes and I know it has something to do with eating, but I am wondering if it boils down to the hernia causing the itching. I can't find anything. I tried to bring this up to the GI doctor and his answer was rude. "That's a dermatologist, why are you asking me?" I said, "because it happens after I eat, that's you." Just for the heck of it, I asked the dermatologist and was told "I don't know and the rash has to be present while in front of me." I have been going through this for a year and I am scared.

I've tried everything it seems. No dairy, no gluten. That doesn't seem to be the problem. I've eliminated and added things back. I am at my wit's end.

    Any thoughts or ideas?

    Thanks,

    Sami

    Hello all,

New to this site but I love ALL the info I have received off of it. Been having digestive issues off and on for

months now. Started with bad acid reflux which had me popping Zantac 150 2x a day until I took Digestive

enzymes for a few days and that problem seemed to go away. Also I will have left sided abdominal pain (like a dull, burning ache) that comes and goes. It sits right under my lowest left rib. The latest problems are a sudden sharp pain in my back (Upper left side behind my shoulder) for about 3-4 seconds. It will

go away and funny thing, I will then have to pass wind making me seriously suspicious that gas is the

culprit of my woes BUT I won't feel the gas travel...I have had my heart checked out by a cardiologist and

blood work. ecg and EKG look fabulous except for the occasional PVC flare ups, so I don't think this is

cardiovascular. If I press lightly on my middle below my sternum it's kind of tender. Also, I regurgitate

involuntarily at times, especially if I am in my recliner, slightly leaned back. I wonder if it's a hernia. I do have Anxiety in which I take Lorazapam 1 mg for as needed. I am overweight but have been losing weight slowly and steadily due to diet changes and drinking way more water than I was.

If anyone has any advice, I am all ears smile

    Hi Sami,

WOW, you sure are having your issues with these clown docs, huh? I am sorry you were treated like that...The itching you describe sounds like some "nerves gone wild" and as Eddie 10 said, if anything presses on that Vagus nerve, it causes all kinds of weird stuff to happen to you. I have anxiety and Acid Reflux and I believe a lot of it is caused by that vagus nerve being under-stimulated. There is a GOOD article on the Vagus nerve. If you want to read it, send me a message because I don't think we can post links in the forum.

Hang in there; we are all here for ya!

      Hi Stacy,

I did send you a reply via private message about sending me the article, but I haven't heard back from you.  Are you still checking the forum?

Could you also please share the address about the Vagas Nerve please.

Hi Holly, I dont think I can send you a link on this forum.  But if you Google "Hiatus Hernia Vagus Nerve" you will get lots of information, and the cassiopaea site article is interesting.

I have a 3 cm sliding HH was placed on a PPI July last year, these drugs have really made me feel really sick most of the time. Not sure if anyone else has had a bad experience with PPI's? I am trying to wean myself off of these drugs. Yes these drugs are useful for a short period of time to allow for healing but not for the rest of your life as I was told.

I am under the impression that surgery is the only solution to the pain of a sliding HH/acid reflux.

I was not aware of the dangers of PPI's in long term use and there are many of them.

    Regards

Your narration is taking me back in time. My father had hernia some years back and he had similar symptoms. He had unbearable pain and it was a difficult sight to watch. But now he is perfectly alright after the hernia surgery. He had his surgery from the best hernia clinic in Ontario.

But the months before that surgery were a nightmare. So I suggest you meet a hernia specialist as soon as possible and get the surgery done.
