SLIDING HIATUS HERNIA SYMPTOMS AND QUESTIONS

Hi I'm new to this site, just recently been diagnosed with a 4cm sliding hiatus hernia after suffering for 2 years with horrendous chest, neck, shoulder and back pain! been to A&E a least 5 times this year thinking I was having heart problems! had an endoscopy 4 weeks ago and was diagnosed! so now what? I was sent home with no advise whatsoever. been on all the PPI's for the last 15 years as I suffer with GERD and IBS! I feel bloated all the time, I burp, fart, feel sick and light headed and now I get a pulsating throb from my tummy through my chest into my throat If I eat the wrong thing it feels like I got a tennis ball stuck behind my sternum, really fed up with this now. I won't go the operation route, it's not got a good success rate! so it's maintenance, put the head of my bed on two blocks 8inches high, given up gluten and dairy and all spicy foods eat 3 hours before I got to bed and have a swig of gaviscon as a night cap! I take a multi vitamin and magnesium supplements. the next step is stop smoking and drinking red wine what else can I do? the omeprazole makes me feel crap, so I've gone back to ranitidine. any advise would seriously be welcomed.........

I am very similar in symptoms to yourself. I would really appreciate it if you could let me know which side of your back you get the shoulder pain. Mine is on the right and all the drs says thats not possible with h.h.
I too have a pressure in my centre chest, a cough and this horrid back pain which is pretty bad and burning.
Have had chest xrays etc all clear. Was told my hernia is small and would not cause problems. I have all the usual symptoms but shoulder back pain is by far the worse.

I have a constant dull ache now in the centre (i think) which gets worse at times .i now know its prob acid but it amazes me how docs all have different opinions,i dont think GPs are too knowlageable on this ,but saying that i have a great doc who took time to explain things to me .Im not sure if its my diet or meds but my pains arent as bad as they were ,Ialso have barrets and the doc thinks that combined with the HH is prob the cause of my pains .you should ask for the camera,Iam still waiting biopsi results which feels pretty scary ,but theres lots of us and its good to hear were not imagening these symptons

Been having problems for the last 3 years. Upper barium chest X-Ray revealed a sliding HH.
I am overweight with diabètes II.
For the last 3 months it has been getting worst but not to the point of dying but I feel like I would have cancer because I am feeling like s****.
Last endoscopy, done 3 weeks ago revealed nothing. Waiting for biopsy results.
I have been on and off from Prevacid now trying Pantalock
I have feeling of lump in throat, bad taste in throat after eating as Eddie mentionned earlier.
I have now inflammation burning sensation in left arm starting from wrist-thumb area wich does not go away.
I have had also the sudden short stabbing pain that hits the midlle chest area. So hard that I shout.
It is panicking
It has come down to suicidal thoughts but no plans but I would consider a surgery in Ontario but waiting for stomach reduction surgery to help stabilise my diabetes 2.
One thing that seems to emerge from all discussion forums on that subject is commonly no one seems to find a way to be helped out seriously by conventional prescribed medication or professional help.
It seems three things are improving somehow for some:
1) Digestive Enzymes wich one member here and a close friend of mine strongly recommended
2) Surgery to resolve that Hiatal hernia but may give long term stomach disconfort bloating and no gas relief possibilities for some.
3) Loosing tremendous weight to let the HH returned to his proper location for good. Not proven 100% sure.
The sensation I sense from you and I also feel is that we are left on our own with pain and suffering wanting relief.
I believe that loosing the extra weight, avoiding trigger foods that cause GERD, changing ways of eating going more vegetables, grains and fruits. Leaner protein and fat Omega 3 fishes will help to better life.
One thing I have recently discovered is that for people that are aging or diabetics, gastroentologist have noticed that the oesophagal-stomach sphincter seems to lose it's firmness over time.
Combined to Fat pushing on the stomach, eventually putting everything in place for the HH to emerge.
One other encouraging thing for obese people with diabetics/HH is that one recent study pointed that insulin induced resistance with obesity/diabetic conditions had a negative effect on the parasympatic system wich has the abilityto improve or decrease the tone/force of the stomach sphincter.
What does it mean, basically the fat cells causes the pancréas to produce bad quality insulin wich in turn affects the nervous part of the system wich improves the rigidity of the stomach opening.
If your oesophagal spincter is stronger and you have lossed alot of weight it is possible that you HH will go back to it's natural location. End to alot of our problems and suffering/anxiety.
In an article called the "Townsend letter" the author looks at alternative treatment to PPI and food avoidance for getting better result in treating HH without surgery.
Hope I was not to complicated in my explanations as I am french speaking from Canada.
If you have some tips that did work out, please I beg you to share it with this community.
It is important to tell our stories but is wiser to post our success/tips also.
So Please come back and share with the world your improvements as we badly need each other to fight this disease and enjoy life to it's fullest.

understand what your all going through
correct me if I'm wrong but it's not the acid reflux and bitter taste in our mouths on a daily basis that's the
problem, its all the other symptoms that scare the crap out of me! chest pain, neck and shoulder pain, the
feeling of something stuck around my sternum and throat, bloating constant burping, muscle spasms and
contractions in the oesophagus, breathing problems caused by ingesting acid into our lungs, the list goes
on and on, nightmare! then anxiety sets in for fear of getting barrets! I stopped taking PPI'S 4 months ago
as they were making me feel very ill...so now what? put up and shut up seems to be the consensus from all the doctors, because really no one can help us except ourselves...I'm not sure if my HH is responsible
for my neck, shoulder and chest pain as I have cervical spondylitis and fibromyalgia...I would like to hear
from you guys if your HH gives you neck, shoulder and chest pain. anyway good luck to you all and keep
your chin up!

don't bad about pips intolerance...too many long term negatives. There is a lot you can try...myriad natural substances - slippery elm; drink aloe Vera; DGL, Apple cider vinegar, etc. also chiropractors have special exercises for h/h. Diet modification is important - nix coffee, soft drinks, alcohol, fried foods. Being overweight is especially bad for h/h because of the pressure forcing your stomach up. I am doing all of the above along with grazing instead of eating 3x per day. Feeling a lot better.......

I have the same problem, pain between the shoulder blades which radiates through to the centre of my chest, vile taste in my mouth 24/7 never lets up! I can't tolerate ppi's either and been off them for 5 months and I'm getting worse. had a mri of my chest and lungs two weeks ago and they found two nodules on my lung, great! they seem to think it's scarring or a previous infection also could be down to ingesting acid in to my lungs! my follow up is Monday. got a 24 hour PH test on Wednesday also. I've also got cervical spondylitis (arthritis of the neck) when the both of them flare up I'm in big trouble. been really STRESSED this last week or so and both have flared making my life a total misery....
It seems that Hiatus hernias come with a wide range of nasty symptoms, what size is yours? mine is 3cm sliding, at first I was told 4cm but in fact it's 3cm....anyway I wish you all the best Maria and try to stay stress free, because you'll be surprised what that silly little word can do to your body....

You certainly seem to be going through it. My hernia I was told was small the consultant was so dismissive even though we paid 1400 pounds for the endoscopy. Did not even want to see me again and I was still so drowys I did not ask what I wanted to. I also have had numerous tests x rays ultradounds but no answer.
I would think the nodules are quite a common finding on cts as I have seen severzl people say it had appeared on their cts but was benign. Especially as you suffer from fibro plus the acid in our lungs does not help.
I too have cervical spondylosis and bone spurs but its the feeling of being so ill, nauseated etc that is getting me down.
Please post when you have all your results.

I got rid of it once for six years and now it's back. Last time I got rid of it by living off rice and veg for a month. Little fat and no alcohol. No wheat.
I went back to normal and could eat what I liked.
About two months ago went to s America and ate a shit ton of bread and few veg. They do t eat much veg. Came back, broke out on hives, had horrible diarrhoea with mucus in It. A month later and realised the hernia was back as well. Chicken and the egg. Dunno what came first.
I've cut out all gluten and corn including sweet corn, tomatoes and meat. Back to my rice and veg diet. Hernia seems to caused by certain foods that don't show themselves upon eating that meal I.e bread. But cause problems for everything I eat after that. Trickey. Same with alcohol.
The problem I have is my stomach and intestines cramp and tense up. They then don't let air out either way. This then builds and slowly pushes my stomach up through to the left and under my rib cage. Quickest way to tell is to poke the gap in between where your rib cages meet and just below it. If it hurts your stomach has moved there.
Calm your self and push it back down. (Watch youtube videos on this). This doesn't solve your problem though. Eat the wrong food and it goes straight back up a lot easier then it went down trust me. Apple cider vinegar tablets, apples, bananas all seem good at de cramping. Will try kiwi as someone said that worked. If you feel depressed its the nerve. Move stomach down and you will feel better instantly. I'm gona live off rice, veg and potatoes, humous and lots of fruit. Will let you know how it goes... Best alcoholic drink is gin and slimline tonic. Avoid alcohol if you can though. My mum has this problem and now has ulcerated colitis... I'm determined to fix it again. I don't want to the same way.
Cheers

Can you give an update?
I have this currently, and wanted to know if your temporary diet fixed this and/or if you can identify the particular foods that caused you issues.
I've been watching for an update, but haven't seen one and want to know if this worked for you - I refuse the surgery, not a fan of unnatural processes unless the only other option is loss of life, limb or eyesight.
