SLIDING HIATUS HERNIA SYMPTOMS AND QUESTIONS

Posted , 184 users are following.

Hi I'm new to this site, just recently been diagnosed with a 4cm sliding hiatus hernia after suffering for 2 years with horrendous chest, neck, shoulder and back pain! been to A&E a least 5 times this year thinking I was having heart problems! had an endoscopy 4 weeks ago and was diagnosed! so now what? I was sent home with no advise whatsoever. been on all the PPI's for the last 15 years as I suffer with GERD and IBS! I feel bloated all the time, I burp, fart, feel sick and light headed and now I get a pulsating throb from my tummy through my chest into my throat cry If I eat the wrong thing it feels like I got a tennis ball stuck behind my sternum, really fed up with this now. I won't go the operation route, it's not got a good success rate! so it's maintenance, put the head of my bed on two blocks 8inches high, given up gluten and dairy and all spicy foods eat 3 hours before I got to bed and have a swig of gaviscon as a night cap! I take a multi vitamin and magnesium supplements. the next step is stop smoking and drinking red wine rolleyes what else can I do? the omeprazole makes me feel crap, so I've gone back to ranitidine. any advise would seriously be welcomed.........

Hi I'm new to this forum. I too have been having a lot of Heath problems, these have been going on for

Several years. I saw a few too many clown drs in my community and now travel hours to find quality health

Care. Found I have a small sliding hernia, gallstones, cyst in right armpit, growth in uterus, cysts in uterus.

The entire right side of my body is in pain. My right nostril is blocked. Lesion on right side of skull. Can barely touch my head. Strange taste and smell. Right ear is ringing and throbbing. Right side of face hurts. No

One is doing nothing except throw a multitude of pills at me. I have become very frustrated with the lack of care and quality of care I have been receiving. I do everything I am supposed to do either no relief.

This sliding hernia and gallstone attacks are horrible. I have no idea how I make it through each day?

My stomach is sore and swollen due to all of these problems. Take all kinds of medication with no relief.

I did finally find a dr who said surgery is my only option for the gallstone and sliding hernia, but don't know

How long I will have to wait. Walking and talking also aggravates these problems.

    Frustrated

Sharpie I'm very sorry to hear of your problems you should do some research on hiatal hernias and the vagus nerve I have a mate who lives abroad who's dr gave him a shot of Botox into his vagus nerve somehow which help a lot of his symtoms I'm still researching how that is possible but he is in a Asian country so I'm not sure but when your hernai slids up up or you esophagus is inflamed it can put pressure on this vagus nerve causing a host of issue this according to my GI dr I'm not sure that it can cause all the symptoms you are having

But it's a thought also in regards to your gallbladder my GI dr sent me in for a Hida Scan and found that mine was not working properly also that I had sludge in it he suggest to me to drink beet juice three times a day about a shots glass worth and what a difference it had made although I did not have stones so perhaps this will not help everyone also finding ready made beet juice was quite hard but I did find some made by Biotta ready made at a local Heath and wellness store

Good luck I hope you find a solution for what ales you day by day to start

Hi  I think on an old thread you commented about hiatus hernia and pain left of belly button? I get this pain and my only diagnosis is HH. So just wondered more about your symptoms. I also get constant strong fluttering around belly button are, which is driving me, mad!  So any advice appreciated.

    Hi

I was on Omeprazole and the side effects were horrendous so I had to give up. Im now on

Lansoprazole which I feel might not be so effective but causes less side effects (just dizziness and

    tiredness).

Did you lose weight through your illness and was their a change in bowel movements? This is worrying me.

My weight has been like a yo yo and I have really put on the weight and I try to watch what I eat, I have a lot of issues that are not being properly addressed.  But the weight gain is because I no longer partake in any physical activity.  Once all of my issues are dealt with properly I'll start exercising again.

Hi Andrew, I was on the same PPI (20yrs), all the time I was on them I had Really bad Diarrhoea, constant loose stalls, feeling lightheaded, sick and fatigued! been off them for 6months (doctors orders) and my stools are now normal. unless I eat something that seriously upsets my hiatus hernia and my tummy. and yes I did lose weight, but not now! I'm trying to lose weight but seem to find it hard, even though my diet is very good. was diagnosed last summer with a 3cm sliding hernia and fibromyalgia! trying to control my symptoms with gaviscon, waste of time. I could go on and on about PPI'S and all the grief they have caused me taking them long term but I won't, just read some of my posts matey. Good luck and chin up, I know what you are going through, trust me.

I too have been going through a lot and it's not fun.  Doctors don't understand how debilitating a sliding hernia or gallstone attacks, they just don't care.  I am on so many pills with very little relief.  I Aldo have a strange smell and taste.  Even my lips have a strange taste to them.  If I become too warm it's as though something is cooking in me and the smell becomes stronger.  Ugh. A dr said that I will go for surgery still waiting.

Go for the surgery. Every one is different and you might start feeling a lot better.  I was told years ago that I had slight acid reflux a gastroscopy was done twice, another test said I had significant acid reflux, I have taken all kinds of antacids with very little relief.  I'm still waiting for a call back from a surgeon.

Ok just giving an update  from what i wrote earlier...

I HAE SOLVED MY ONGOING TEN YEAR DIGESTIVE/HIATUS HERNIA problem....

I AM extremely lucky and this solved my hiatus hernia, pain between the shoulders blades, burping a lot, trapped gas, cramps, depression, mood swings, weight loss, anal liquid discharge, diarrhea, constapation, beo, sweats , bad breath, blood blisters on my tounge and cheeks, blood in my stools -  And all within 1 day of this diet!

Problem - FRUCTOSE MALABSORPTION had been causing gas in my intestines from a bacterial overgrowth for ten years! I ate chewing gum and got two blood blisters, googled it and this came up straight away.  Cut out all fruits, onions, garlic, all carbs apart from rice and potatoe and all fake sugars And voila! im fixed! I told my sister who had cysts on her ovaries and my mum who has the start of ulerated collitus and their symptoms have gone with in two days!   Turns out my dad has it as well but his body can handle it and it just make him fart.  Anyway i hope this reaches people nad saves them the agony i have been through.  Google fructose malabsorption and give it a try!

      GOOD LUCK!!! xx

I don't know if you saw my post, but I spoke about the random stomach rashes - After a year, I finally figured it out too.  I had elimated everything one by one, including daily strawberries and blueberries, but separately.  One day a thought came to me wondering if I could suddenly be intolerant to fruit - Bam! Sure enough, I too googled it and found fructose malabsorption - Rashes stopped, but I still get the internal itching in the esphogus.  Still trying to figure that one out, but it is likely a reaction too.  I am thinking daily cinnamon in oatmeal.  Anyway, congrats!

ah cool, well apparently oatmeal has 1 % fructose and definetly effects me and my mum negatively.  Id suggest cutting it out as well! Milk definitely effects me badly.  Cant handle the lactose either!  Trying to find a soya milk that has no sugar or inulin.  Just skipping breakfst and going straight to lunch personally. Thanks and congrats to you too!

Hard to find something quick to eat for breakfast, so oatmeal usually works for now. I was doing smoothies for a while, but I was getting the rashes from those too.  Not so sure I could do a smoothie without fruit. Blah!  I am not a big fan of quinoa, so definitely don't want that as a breakfast option.  I don't seem to be lactose intolerant, but other than cream in my coffee, I don't do much for dairy. I use almond milk for most everything else that you would use milk in.  I have tried the fasting and going straight to lunch, but it doesn't work well for me. I end up getting a headache.  My almond milk doesn't contain sugar.  If you have any ideas for a quick and easy breakfast, let me know.  I have also suddenly developed an intolerance to eating eggs on their own.  Sigh! I think all of this has to do with poor digestion/leaky gut or whatever you want to call it.  I think if the proper person can help you get back on track with digestion, a lot of the intolerances will get better.

Yeah breakfast is annoying. Sugar fee peanut butter and rice cakes? Free from rice cereal is ok.  Egg and rice?  Yeah breakfast is annoying.  You could always go fry up and chips.  Might get fat though!

I would recommend staying away from fatty fried food when having a HH.

This only aggrevates the hernia. I am speaking from experience as i have a HH for 9 months now and still trying to see what works and does not work.

Can't have the eggs - Rice cakes and peanut butter might taste like cardboard with peanut butter lol

I definitely agreed with the no fat think until I realised it was fructose and fructans causing the problem.  It was almost like if I had no fat or meat the fructose would move so fast through my system it wouldn't cause too many problems. Now I have no fruit, less veggies and no sugar I can eat more fat. Eg peanut butter mostly. No problems.  Not sure if anyone else has had this problems as well but I stopped farting.  Gas would build up in my stomach and then the pressure would push the top of the stomach through my diaphragm.  This would ensue a cycle of more problems.  Acid, more bacteria building up in the stomach, more gas, more pressure, more hernia etc.  last night by massaging my stomach I burped all the gas left.  My stomach returned back to it normal position after some manual adjusting.  I ate some lacto free cheese.  Turns out I can't have that... Gas started to build big time.  I noticed it was building in the stomach and then not passing through to my intestines and out the way.  I know from experience when I'm farting things are good.  My dad had fructose malabsorption but farts all the time and doesn't mnd.  (My mum isn't too keen) anyway I started thinking what if my intestines and stomach had twisted and we're blocking the normal route?  As my stomach was in place I started massaging at my belly button and below my stomach to the left.  Holding my right hand up against the left of my belly button and with my left in a swiping motion pulling the bottom of my stomach and intestines to the left also.  I did this for five minutes sitting on a chair and arching my back slightly. Then I felt everything settle into a far more comfy position and I farted.  I have been farting all night like the good old days. To keep everything in the right place during the day you need to hold your stomach in just very slightly with your stomach muscles and the muscle you push to poo just very slightly have that tensed to push also.  This will send air the right way through your system.  5 years ago I fixed all these problems and it all went away for four years. I ate what I liked.  I'm hoping that day will come again soon! Hope this can help someone and I apologise for the graphic detail of my bowels! Haha

Thats eVERYTHING. I live in the usa. Breads, jellies, sodas, EVERYTHING has high fructose corn syrup in it. Im screwed. only a handful of products offer non fructose versions.

Hi stu17930 - I have been having stomach issues for years.  It didn't occur to me that my lack of farts was a bad thing.  I tried what you suggested about rubbing the bottom of your stomach, and it really worked!  I farted a few times, and my stomach felt so much better!

My GI doctor told me that burping is not a great thing to do when I have GERD bc the acid spills back into my esophogus.  But it didn't occur to me that I should help the air along through the intestines and that if it got caught in there, that it could be putting pressure back up into my stomach.

      Thanks for the advice!

One thing I did differently -- instead of sweeping to the left, I sweep to the right.  I tried it both ways, and sweeping to the right worked better for me.  I suggest anyone reading this should try it one way for a day, then try it the other way, to see what works best for you.

In regard to tensing your lower stomach muscles - I actually started feeling better when I relax that muscle.  It helps my HH come back down.  I used to hold in my lower stomach muscles (read on an exercise blog that it helps to tone the muscle), but that made it hard for the HH to relax and come back down.
