SLIDING HIATUS HERNIA SYMPTOMS AND QUESTIONS

Hi I'm new to this site, just recently been diagnosed with a 4cm sliding hiatus hernia after suffering for 2 years with horrendous chest, neck, shoulder and back pain! been to A&E a least 5 times this year thinking I was having heart problems! had an endoscopy 4 weeks ago and was diagnosed! so now what? I was sent home with no advise whatsoever. been on all the PPI's for the last 15 years as I suffer with GERD and IBS! I feel bloated all the time, I burp, fart, feel sick and light headed and now I get a pulsating throb from my tummy through my chest into my throat cry If I eat the wrong thing it feels like I got a tennis ball stuck behind my sternum, really fed up with this now. I won't go the operation route, it's not got a good success rate! so it's maintenance, put the head of my bed on two blocks 8inches high, given up gluten and dairy and all spicy foods eat 3 hours before I got to bed and have a swig of gaviscon as a night cap! I take a multi vitamin and magnesium supplements. the next step is stop smoking and drinking red wine rolleyes what else can I do? the omeprazole makes me feel crap, so I've gone back to ranitidine. any advise would seriously be welcomed.........

You seem to be doing all the right things.  Smoking and drinking are bad for h/h.  Also, I never had this issue until I became overweight.....working on that.  I am trying something new next week......chiro therapy......will report back.

If you are aware of a family history of stomach cancer, why wouldn't you run immediately to a doctor?  Waiting can be the problem with cancers. With that said not all stomach issues lead to cancer. Second opinions are always good things to have with your health. I have read a lot of these post and a lot have symptoms that are similar and I read hernia and GERD.  Some are not aware that the gallbladder can give a lot of the same symptoms and be mistaken. People often take meds for reflux/GERD  and find they do not work, this would be true if the reflux/ acid was associated with gallbladder issues because it needs a different type of medication not antacids.  Stress about what it is or isn't will not help.

Hi Melanie, sorry for the late reply but I've been waiting on some test results to come back. I'm sorry to hear you have Barrets, I'm sure they will sort that out for you. well It's been 6 months without PPI'S and all my bloods are now back to normal, my Lupus like symptoms have gone and all my bloods indicate I don't have Lupus or APS, which is great news. the Docs all seem to now agree that my abnormal bloods where Drug induced PPI'S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! However after having a 24hour PH test, Ive been told that my Acid level is severly chronic and need to go back on PPI'S to avoid getting cancer. trying to manage my Hiatus Hernia with Gaviscon is futile, my neck shoulder back and chest pain is unbearable at times. my doctor seems to think that it's a combo of my Hiatus Hernia, Cervical spondylosis (neck arthritis) and Fybromalgia. I think the jury is out on that lot!  I've got my final follow up at st thomas hospitals Lupus clinic next month where I'm going to be told I don't have an autoimune desease and that will also mean Fybromalgia, so it appears that the culprit for all my grief has been PPI'S, Hiatus hernia, Gerd and a bit of neck arthritis...so I seem to be stuck between the devil and deep blue sea! What would you guys do if in my situation?

      take care

Eddie I had severe pain in my neck-shoulders shooting down my right arm from Arthritis and had plates and screws placed at c4567 and it worked out great-I have no more pain rotating thats servere,For your Acid Levels Put a peice of lemon in your water it will bring your acid levels up and they are better high then low,Taking a teaspoon of baking soda mixing to a glass of water also cleans your entire system out,you can do it with Baking soda or apple cider vinegar-Hope you feel better Soon,Doctors now days seem like they just want to use this pill that pill to see if they work-Its best to go onto the internet and look up your problems cause I have learnt alot more then what the so called quacks have told me and just costing me thousands of Dollars when something simple can make you feel better

Hi, I am 28 years old at 12 years of age I had severe stomach problems, severe pain the doctors actually removed my appendix to tell me that it was perfectly healthy, I had a barium swallow and was told I had an ulcer and acid reflux which I have used zantac/pantaloc for off and on when I can't control symptoms with diet. At 18 was diagnosed with anxiety disorder after repeated trips to the ER for chest pain/pressure breathing difficulties, generally thinking I was going to die of a heart attack. In 2010 I started having difficulties swallowing, most often at night, I can usually get it under control but if I choke or am under any type of stress (kids crying, feel under pressure, any sort of stressor) it gets worse and worse, and it's a downward spiral I can't swallow not even my own saliva/ I'm choking/ I can't breath, I force a swallow and gasp for air/now I can't breath, and I am pretty sure I felt my heart flutter/stop, now I have chest pain, can't breath and can't swallow, I'm going to die....vicious vicious cycle. After my second pregnancy my acid reflux was at its worst and I started regurgitating, it was horrible, my doctor sent me for an endoscopy . Which only showed that I had scar tissue in my esophagus (from the gerd), after my third child and the increased acid reflux and general unwellness,

Which only showed that I had scar tissue in my esophagus (from the gerd), after my third child and the increased acid reflux and general unwellness, I went back to my doctor because I was still having stomach issues/pain sent for blood work and uultrasound. To which I got a diagnosis of IBS And recommended to eat a gluten and dairy free diet to relieve symptoms. This did help quite a bit less bloating, and belching. And I felt alright for quite awhile. Until recently I separated from the father of my children, which has been shrouded stress and drama, back into the workforce, as lot of stress physically emotionally and financially. Went back in to the Dr.s after a few ER "heart attacks", ultrasounds and egg's that showed I wasn't dying. Time to go back on the anxiety meds. But this time around they are not really doing much, in fact I have been on them 3 months and I am having worse and more frequent "attacks" then ever before, and now with more symptoms in the last month I have had the regular chest pain, and shortness of breath, but now the chest pain is accompanied with a feeling as though something is pushing up against the bottom of my lungs making me struggle to take deep breaths, I have had an capability to yawn, which is both annoying and frightening. I take heaving breaths that indraw all around my collar bone and neck, to which I use my ventolin thinking I'm having an asthma attack. Which makes my heart race and makes me really think I'm going to have a heart attack. My left shoulder in the front gets shooting pains, and my left forearm, (went to a walking about my arm and was told I bruisedvthe bone, it only really bothers me when I'm stressed and ha es been happening almost 2-3 months), as well as a shooting pain in between my shoulder blades, more towards the left side as well. Now how would a person not think they were going to die of a heart attack? The last few weeks on top of all that my swallowing issues have gotten exponentially worse, to the point I can't swallow my saliva I choke and gasp and feel like my heart has stopped, I get so short of breath randomly that I can't complete an entire sentance without stopping for a breath. I try my hardest around friends and the public to not stumble through conversations, usually just by nodding, saying mmhmm or laughing, anything that can get me through without gasping for air and needing my inhaler every hour. I finally got the nerve, I had an appointment for test results with my doctor for something totally unrelated to this, we went over that, and then he was getting up to go and I looked at him and said, I had a barium swallow, an endoscopy, multiple tests and procedures for a number of random symptoms and pain, and never have I gotten a real answer as to what is wrong with me, it just gets brushed off as anxiety but I am still in pain it doesn't just go away because the tests didn't show anything. He looked through his computer at some of the tests and got his nurse to pull some xrays, came back to me and said, have you ever heard of a hiatus hernia.

    So we shall see.

I am wondering if anyone else ever gets a tight feeling in their throat/neck and collarbone area.  It's really scaring me.  I thought maybe the PPI's were causing it and when I stopped them, it got better, but not completely.  I don't want to go to the dr just to get an "I don't know" or auctomatically chalk it up to acid reflux without anything else. Losing faith in the medical field overall.  As it is I think we treat these acid issues wrong, but we all get in this PPI trap which I feel made us worse to begin with.  Maybe I will feel a bit better if anyone knows what I am talking about and has been through it

hello eddie, I was diagnosed with hiatus hernia in 1985 and suffered with it until 2001 when I was advised to have an operation it's called a Fundoplasty which I had it's not very nice but in my case it was a success, it lasted 13 years but unfortunately it has now come back but it learned me a lesson I would have died if I had ignored it and I know now how to keep it in check, you cannot drink any wine or smoke, no fizzy drinks, try to avoid oils and fats, omeprazole made me ill so I stopped taking them, Manuka honey 10+plus helps have a teaspoon in the morning and evening and try putting it in porridge and toast, and try to avoid green veg that bloats you, also having a glass of water before you go to bed helps with the acid. There is a theory that you may have have too little acid in your system, you should try and check that out. Eat small amounts of food over the day and don't eat after 7pm, keep taking Gaviscon Advance your GP should provide you with that also make sure you don't get hungry because that creates acid. The best of luck to you hope this bit of advice helps.

Thank you Margaret, I'm trying to give up smoking, very hard! I love red wine and I know it causes me acid, so I've given up the wine. I've cut down on tea and coffee, one cup each a day. Try and eat 3 hours before bed and have been experimenting with foods. I've now discovered that rice, potatoes, salmon and wheat makes it worse! My bed is on two house bricks and I drink gaviscon during the day and before bed. I to can't take PPI's they make me so ill. I'm also trying to lose some weight as I've been told it will help. Thanks for your reply Margaret x
