SLIDING HIATUS HERNIA SYMPTOMS AND QUESTIONS

Hi I'm new to this site, just recently been diagnosed with a 4cm sliding hiatus hernia after suffering for 2 years with horrendous chest, neck, shoulder and back pain! been to A&E a least 5 times this year thinking I was having heart problems! had an endoscopy 4 weeks ago and was diagnosed! so now what? I was sent home with no advise whatsoever. been on all the PPI's for the last 15 years as I suffer with GERD and IBS! I feel bloated all the time, I burp, fart, feel sick and light headed and now I get a pulsating throb from my tummy through my chest into my throat cry If I eat the wrong thing it feels like I got a tennis ball stuck behind my sternum, really fed up with this now. I won't go the operation route, it's not got a good success rate! so it's maintenance, put the head of my bed on two blocks 8inches high, given up gluten and dairy and all spicy foods eat 3 hours before I got to bed and have a swig of gaviscon as a night cap! I take a multi vitamin and magnesium supplements. the next step is stop smoking and drinking red wine rolleyes what else can I do? the omeprazole makes me feel crap, so I've gone back to ranitidine. any advise would seriously be welcomed.........

Hi Eddie,  I am in the same boat and it sucks. I have come to the realisation that the only thing that seems to work is 2 tramacet when needed if the pain becomes unbearable. I have lost 22 kgs in 6 months. I hope this helps

Hello all reading, I have been reading a lot on these forums, sorry for your many issues with this. Some sound as if there is more than one thing going on and many sound like side effects.  I might say I have suffered for a while with GERD/acid reflux issues. Went to the Dr. because of chest pains, not knowing if it was a heart attack. Then the the test.  Stress test for heart, passed with flying colors.  Gallbladder, no issue, endoscopy, and so on. I have found in reading that gallbladder issues have similar symptoms but a different reflux type which do not respond to antacids for GERD related reflux.  I have medications but am not fond of using things unless it is just the last resort.  I try as many natural things as possible as well as eating real whole foods with no processing or chemicals. Some spices and herbs as well as foods are very good for issues like these. Stress management is important. I can say that my pain reoccurs or worsen during high stress times. I love spice and herbs for flavorful foods. I can't imagine eating bland, I love to cook and bake. I find that the more processed the food; example minute rice, instant oats, the worse it will be.  Because our body metabolizes it differently than say brown rice that still has the fiber and protein as well as the starch.  Some spices ands herbs are antibacterial to our body as well. I am not by any means saying all things work for all people the same, but for me I find that I can manage eating things I enjoy just being mindful about how much and when not to.  Some people mention drinking water and eating bananas, water worsen my reflux at times and bananas are a sure thing to cause irritation for me.   All in all it's a process of elimination, same as it can be with finding the issues.

Also probiotics may be helpful. Good bacteria to counteract bad in the gut. You may or may not have heard about the benefits but may be worth a try.   Just some suggestions that may be helpful. Good luck and well wishes.

I to have been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia. I have all the same symptoms as you re light headed ness, feeling sick, shoulder pain, bloated ness to name but a few. It really gets me down on a day to day basis and I'm coming to the end of my tether! No matter which doctor or specialist I see it always ends up with them proscribing some sort of PPI medication. The only one that seems to have a very small effect is ranitidine but only a little. Have you quit smoking yet and has it helped. But quitting red wine? That's sacrilidge lol. I'm having a bad  time right at this very moment. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

      Hi Spenna

I have had a HH (3 cm) for a year now and it has been a uphill battle on a daily basis. I am on a PPI for the last year but has been giving me a lot of ups and downs that you get. I know people say the operation route is not the answer but now i tend to disgree. I am strongly recommending the operation. On 30 Sept i have a 24 hr pH and bile test before op. I have not takern a PPI for 4 days now to try and see if there is a difference, yesterday was not a good day, today feel a bit beter but still stomach cramps. They say a person must not go "cold turkey" when on PPIs but i have to try something. I try to eat smaller meals and do not drink any liquids wehn eating wait a while. I take digestive enzymes after each meal to aid my stomach as the PPIs are not allowing our food to be digested due to lack of acid. A probiotic helps the stomach, each morning i eat plain yogart also to aid my stomach. Hope this helps a bit, i know exactly how you feel and our stress levels rise which is not a good thing. Good Luck.

    Hi Guys

Only been suffering for last 9 months but my life is hell - Had ultra sound , ct scan , x-ray and endoscope but doctors cant actually find anything. I get pains in the sternum area but worst is the middle of my back and up to my lower neck - Dread sleeping at night or after nightshifts as i usually awake with breathlessness and a panic like sensation - The omeprezole doesnt seem to work but gaviscon advanced does seem to help - Had 3 hours sleep last night before work - Been in hospital 3 times now each time doctors have diagnosed something different (HH or GORD or angina) - Pretty sure ive got a hernia wether sliding or Hiatus or diaphramatic - Would give absouletly anything to feel normal again - Anyone had surgery and felt normal again or am i doomed to suffer in pain the rest of my life

Hi just been reading your posts,I was diagnosed with HH nealy 2 years ago but also diagnosed with AF and irregular heart beat so put on omeprozole and then left while they sorted my heart problems out. There was alsorts going on in my chest at the time so I didn,t know which problem was causing what.I have had a pacemaker fit and an ablation so the symptoms I,m left with I take to be HH problems which mainly seem to be nausea in the center of my chest and neck ache and a bit of breathless ness.Is this what you are feeling. There is an operation done by key hole surgery, but the Dr told me they don,t like doing this as the HH can slide back so they say it,s not worth the time, have you heard anything about this argzxoni

how are you doing now??are you still taking ppi drugs??i too have a hiatal hernia

    Hi Guys,

I'm so happy to have found this site. I have always not had the best GI tract and have had some acid reflux. However, in the last week, I have had intolerable chest pain that radiates up towards my left shoulder, some pain in the left side of my neck, pain in my upper back and shortness of breath. I had an EKG yesterday because I thought I was having a heart attack and it scared me even more because I actually do have congenital heart conditions. My EKG was just the same as my last one, nothing had changed, good news. But my doctor said I need to get an upper GI done because she's thinking I have a hiatal hernia. Besides the pain, everything I have been eating feels like it's coming back up. I realized recently that I just noticed a pattern that I feel like crap after every single time that I eat. I felt like I was dealing with things just fine until the intolerable pain recently. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

      Hi Jen

Sorry to hear of your illness - Like you i had heart issues whereby they installed a reveal stick to monitor my heart to see if i need a pacemaker . So when i got pains in my chest in january i went to A&E - was told that i probably had a HH - Since then i have had 2 more A&E visits and several episodes. I Have tried to get the NHS and private doctors to find the root cause and although they cant find anything after several scans - cameras and xrays i suspect a sliding or hiatus hernia based on the coments of others on this site.

Would give anything to have an op an go back to feeling normal again.

In the meantime i have HAD to make many life style changes

Stopped smoking (not such a bad thing although i miss the odd spliff now and then) - I have lost about 2 stone (again not such a bad thing as i was overweight) the diet i am still working on - I was drinking alot of milk as i thought it might fight the acid but have also been told that dairy is bad - So im drinking alot of water now - Eat regulary but small ammounts no spicy or fried foods try to cut out fizzy drinks alchohol and dont take asprin or ibruprofen as pain relief (use paracetamol if u have to) - I have also been advise by my doctor to take Gaviscon advance which seems to help - I take a big dose before bedtime which seems to help - never eat before sleeping and try to raise your bed or sleep up (which i just cant do) - I you see your GP tell them you think you may have a HH they should prescribe omepretzol though how good it is - is questionable.

Hope this helps and i hope you get it sorted

Try eat smaller portions, don't eat near bedtime and sleep upright with pillows, I have given up bread, tomatoes, broccoli, tea:coffee - I only drink herbal now, heavy style foods and spicy, I feel better for this and the attacks are getting less, I have avoided red wine and only have odd white now I find some water takes the acidity Away! I find if I eat bad and have a bad day this worsens how I feel! Good luck Alison

do u experience chest paint and palpitations with your hernia??r u still taking ppi drugs..

They are now few and far between after changing diet, I stopped taking all meds at one point I think what doc put me in was making me worse, I have one attack this month so far and that's been the first so fingers crossed ( I take occasional rennies or gaviscon at bedtime if I start to feel chest pain) and sleeping upright helps

for how long have you been living with this condition?how long has it been since you stopped taking medications?and is your hernia small or large?

Yes had ended up in a & e 3 times, awful but results all came back clear ( ecg) I had my last attack around 1 month but was able to try and calm myself down after an hour so something I ate didn't agree with me - funny think was that night I walked 5 miles so not sure if that had helped bring it on? After 2 rennie's the pains eased, I do still take off rennie's and always have them with me ! Best of luck it's a horrible thing to have and has a huge impact on daily living

    HI Eddie,

I was wondering how things have progressed for you.

I seem to have had a similar experience to you.  About a year ago, I started getting what I thought were heart palpitations and pains in my chest.  I felt out of breath when this happened and exhausted.  A few trips to A&E due to suspected heart attacks but nothing found.  A few ECGs and two visits to a cardiologist also found nothing.  By January the symptoms were getting worse with severe pain in the left of my throat, jaw, left arm etc.  I was also VERY stressed.  I then had an endoscopy and found I had the hiatus hernia.  I immediately started eating better and started to take Omeprazol.  Quite quickly the chest pains, pains in throat and jaw went away, as did the palpitations.  However, at the same time I quickly developed severe neurological symptoms - CONSTANT muscle twitches all over my body, confusion, problems getting my words out, getting my words mixed up, depression and anxiety, tremors, muscle cramps, pins and needles in my hands, dizziness etc.  Saw a neurologist three times and had an MRI head and neck scan which found nothing.  By the time I had my third appointment with the neuro, my symptoms were improving.  At this time, I guess it had been a month after I had finished my course of Omeprazol.  The Neuro said I definitely do not have any scary things like MS, a tumor, motor neurone disease etc, which was a massive relief, and referred me back to my GP.  Although I had improved enough to return to work in May, I still did have lingering neuro symptoms and had a series of private tests for Lyme disease (including some sent to Porton Down), which were all clear.  I did discover I had been infected with Scarlet Fever at some point in the past and the GP suggested I had CFS/post infection syndrome.  Over the next couple of months my symptoms continued to improve slowly but surely.  At the same time, I probably started to slip back into some bad habits with regards to my diet (big portions late at night, chocolate, coffee, spicey foods etc).  In september my chest pain, sore throat and palpitations came back and I was put back on Omeprazol.  Only a week or so later, my neuro symptoms started creaping back and after five weeks, I had severe muscle pains and twitches again.  I am now convinced that it was the Omeprazol causing the neurological symptoms.  I stopped taking Omeprazol last saturday.  I still have the symptoms at the moment (4 days later), but I hope that over the coming weeks the neuro symptoms will reduce again.  If so, I think I can be pretty sure it was Omeprazol that caused the problems.  I know that these side effects are rare, but I am a little anoyed that my GP didn't consider this as the cause of problems back in February, which led me to think I had a degenerative neuro condition, had to have three months off work and at one point could barely get out of my bed.....  I will update you all on progress over the next couple of weeks.

      Hi lee

i was amazed to read all you wrote. I have had exact symptoms, convinced it was heart, several trips to a&e several ecg,s and even stress test and 24 hour monitor test all normal. Had endoscopy showed extreme inflamation in duodenum. Nothing re hernia but still believe it all similar. Everyday is a battle, chest pain arm shoulder and back pain. Hard to believe all linked to stomach. But after reading yours is all so similar , been on so many tablets, currently taking cimetidine, do nothing... So no further forward, feel like life is just all crap atm. So no how u feel. Steph x

Just a quick update.  I have been off the omeprazol now for over a month and the strange muscle twitches etc have now pretty much completely gone.  Very relived and now pretty certain that I was having sever side effects from the medication.  Being off the Omeprazol though has meant that my acid reflux and hernia symptoms have returned (palpitations, cough etc etc....).  At least now I am getting to the bottom of what has caused all the different symptoms.

The official silence over the side effects of PPIs is very worrying. Several years post menopause and a week odd into taking these I started getting tingling breasts swelling and the unmistakable cramps of a menstrual cycle followed by a bleed. My GP refused point blank to attributwe this as iIdid to the Opeprazol and Iad to got for an invasive scan to check for ovarian cancer et al. Of course it was all clear and once I stopped the Omeprazol (my GPfound evidence of Helicobacter and so sumitted me to an antibiotic regime instead, more on that elsewhere) the bleed and associated menstrual symptoms went away.
