So pleased to have the op

I'm 16 weeks now and I can't believe how great I feel.

I tried to put off having the op but the pain and mobility was really difficult.  I was worried about my job because I'm on my feet all the time and it's a physical job. But  I can do it, getting better at getting up from kneeling, I can carry something that's heavy (not massive heavy) to the end of the aisle, I couldn't do it before my op. I can work my 7 hour shift no problem and could work longer, also go for a 5-6mile walk after it.

I got another milestone today, I walked upstairs properly, don't know if I can do it tomorrow but I know I did it, and the steep hils are getting easier too.

I can fasten my laces if I stand up,not sitting but still struggle with socks, I pulled my back a little this morningrolleyes trying to get them on.

But what I'm trying to say is the first weeks are awful, but when things start moving forward it's such a good feeling, and you will get there. It does not matter if you can get yourself into bed straight away or two weeks later like me, or if your off your pain meds, walking aids early or late, most of us get through it, though some have extra problems and theirs will take a bit longer.

If your thinking of getting it done, do it,to be out of painand have more mobility is fantastic.

Keep going everyone and take care.xx

I will hopefully get my 2nd hip done at the end of August.I had a bad knee for about a year and a half before it was actually replaced and both hips have been bad for about the same amount of time so I think when I compare myself to people who are doing great I need to keep that in perspective.I did set myself back so will have to take it 1 day at a time .Thank you for your concern and feedback

Hi Msky, try not to compare yourselfto others, I know it's hard, there weretimes when I did it.  You have a lot going on.  Good luck with your op in August, take care.

    Hello lynn

I am laid in bed feeling a bit low, thinking will things ever improve then I read your message. It has made me feel better and that I will get to where you are eventually. Had my FHR on 24 May so some way to go, and I can see slight improvements each day.

Had some of my staples removed last Thursday,, but a few had to remain in as not quite healed together and my wound leaks slightly so have to have it redressed every day. Other staples should come out next Wednesday.

A quick question, does anyone have tummy upset issues, wearimg me out.

    Best wishes, luv Kath xx

      Hi Kath

Sorry to read you are feeling a bit low. Tomorrow is another day x. So far (& I know I'm very early days) but no upset tummy but I haven't been for a number 2 since Tuesday! X

Yes, I had tummy issues! Whilst taking the stronger painkiller Dihydrocodeine, I couldn't go and had to buy something to help get things moving as well as eating loads of fruit. Once I'd stopped the Dihydrocodeine I found myself going 4 or 5 times a day. Stopping all four helped and once I finished the blood thinners and was able to cut back on the Paracetamol, it all seemed to resolve itself and get back to normal patterns. Hang in there!

For "all four" substitute "all fruit"!!

Hi Kathy.I think that some of the pain medications taken really can be very upsetting to our guts.We also have a big change in our activity patterns plus constipating medications.Im trying to eat fruit, salads and drink high pulp orange juice to cut back on constipation. If you take pain medications then you might try to eat a couple of crackers to prevent nausea.Hope you feel better

      Hi Kath,

It will improve, the first thing I said to myself when I got home, was what the heck have I done and burst into tears. It feels like things are so far away, that we will never get there, but you will.

I had vomiting while in hospital, the morphine, and had to have senokot and stool softeners twice, double dose, second time round to get things working, luckily I had no more trouble that way on.

I had my staples all out at once but I had weeping from the wound and at three weeks had to go back to hospital to get it checked, he told me it was normal.  Hopefully yours will calm down when you get the last ones out.

      Take carexx

How lovely to read this Lynne.  I had my hip replacement a week ago today .  I'm a bit tearful to say the least.  Everything is such hard work and such an effort.  I think I'm doing ok though, it's early days.  It's great to read your doing so well.  It gives us hope. Xx

Hi Jennifer, it's my first full day at home today & I agree that everything is such hard work. The smallest things that we take for granted make a huge difference when you can't actually do them. My husband helped me to have a shower & wash my hair tonight (all before the football started)! I feel so much better just for washing my hair! My husband said putting my new TEDS on was like a workout on its own! Keep thinking positive Jennifer & always remember a good tip that Kate posted on here a few months ago & I'll never forget it - 'Time is an illusion' our whole lives are ruled by the clock (Kate was referring to lack of sleep), but it really doesn't matter when you are recovering from major surgery. There's no work to get up for, no-one demanding our time - just chill, rest & go with the flow. Sending you big hugs x

P.S Where in the world are you? X

I am Shaftesbury Dorset.  Yes, The sleepless nights are a killer.  Getting in and out of bed is such a chore.  I had my last drink at 7pm tonight hoping I won't have to get up so often for the Loo.  Xx

Well I'm in Leicestershire so a bit far away! I was going to suggest we could have a coffee & chew each other's ears off! Hope you sleep well but if not, don't worry. You can get up, have a cuppa, read etc. & then sleep again when your ready. It really doesn't matter what the time is x

Hi Jennifer, thank you.  The first few weeks are the worst and sleeping on the back, a nightmare. The only way I eventually got off was to use a pillow under my calves, to stop pressure sores on my heels and bum.

Frustration is a big thing, you just have to remember you have to give yourself permission to take it easy and sleep whenever you need it, because it is hard to start with. It is a major operation after all and it does mess things up a bit lol

You need to cry, just let it out, I did plenty.

      Take care xx

Hi Fernlady, I know exactly what you mean by getting a hairwash, it does make you feel better, I had to strip wash but even that helped, but I was lucky I didn't have to have them awful TEDS to deal with.

Keep going and have a good recovery. xx
