Socks!

Well fellow hippies I wanted to share a story from so morning. My other half has taken dog out for a walk along the beach this morning so thought I would go for a shower (with the telephone). I dried, I went upstairs and used my dressing aids and pulled on my Knicks followed by my trousers and got dressed no problem. I them came down stairs and thought other half goes back to work next week, perhaps I should try to put some socks on by myself. I had a brainwave of using my dressing aids, which I don't know about anyone else's but mine are 2 pieces of band with a safety pin on each end. So I clipped the socks onto the pins and spent 15, yes 15, minutes trying to get a loose pair of socks! I succeeded! Wahoo yay party time.

Then it occurred to me... How I am going to undo the safety pins which are now attached to my socks and to the string which they are attached to! So now I am sat here with wwarm feet but attached to 2 1 metre lengths of rope so daren't walk anywhere because I'm likely to I trip up. Luckily others half has just walked through the door to unclip me! its made me laugh my socks off! excuse the pun!!!

oh the joys of having a THR! If i don't laugh I'll cry. cheesygrin

I assume you must not be in the UK? The NHS provides a free device for putting one's socks on.  You can also buy them online (I leave the appropriate search term to use to you).  They're simple, straightforward & a real life saver: I still use mine on the bionic hip leg 7 months post op.  Cheers.

Well done for trying. I bought a sock aid but found if I lay on bed I can lift knee and put them on cause hip I supported so don't use it . 10 weeks this week

NHS don't provide sock aids or grabbers for everyone in uk rosshoreBuffUk.

I'm in uk and had to buy mine. However I did get to keep my crutches I was given.

That doesn't make much sense does it ? Crutches prob cost more than grabbers .

My crutches being picked up today . I was given a grabber in hospital .

Thats true Mary but I'm glad I've got the crutches cos I can keep them as long as I need them and if I need another op or as I get worse again I'll have them ready as I find them much more supportive than a stick.

I agree Ross, postcode lottery, how long you have to wait etc etc however I'm glad I didn't have to wear T.e.d. stockings. I had the blow up things pumping round my legs, they were lovely, I'd like to have brought them home with me, but not allowed. I'm also glad I had blood thinning tablets and not injections. It suddenly all seems so long ago, a bit like a dream and I'm only 9 weeks lol. I've been shopping in the city today, I've not been able to do that for a year. Lovely.

That's SOOOO funny Emma, you made me laugh so much, I could just picture it. My sock thingy is one I bought from  a mobility shop. Its a peice of flexible stiff plastic with a long loop of cord. You fold it in half and slip the sock on then pull it over your foot. It works pretty well with a bit of wriggling, then I just adjust the sock with my grabber. Job done. It doesn't help the cats think it's some sort of game and chase the cord around cheesygrin so helpful. x

You made me laugh Emma.  You can get sock aids easily in the UK.  If I was you I should get some boottee slippers which you can reach with a grabber and pull them up, no need for socks then, otherwise your other half better put them on before he goes to work!

You're funny emma!  The sock aid is one of my best friends still!! Do yourself a favor and purchase one on-line.  It is very inexpensive!! Thanks for the chuckle! Ginny USA NJ

Well done Emma for doing all that by yourself and for then making us all laugh 😃

Once I'd ditched the dreaded TEDs I bought a set of cheap socks (5 pairs) one size too big and cut the tops off to make the opening wider and I used my grabber to help pull them on.

    Hi emma

what a wonderf funny episode. It's amazing how our brain conjures up all sorts of cunning plans to be Independant. I have a shoe horn and grabber (which I call my James Bond harpoon) but to tackle a sock "no way!  You deserve a badge!,,,
