Hi there,
I'm sorry to say that there is no real cure other than surgery.
It's probably not what you want to hear.
I have suffered with L3-4, L4-5, L5S1 for more than 20 years.
I've had surgery twice, the latest two weeks ago on L4-5and L3-4.
So far so good but that's because I sought a second opinion and truly believe my second surgeon was fantastic.
Over the years I have tried everything, you name it, I've tried it.
The only thing I can suggest that alleviates the pain in an inversion table - I found out about this when it was too late, you might want to try it.
Good luck.

You didn't say...Orthopaedic Surgeon or Neurosurgeon. Your information doesn't mean anything to me..because I live in Canada & I'm not familiar with the location you mentioned.

An inversion table - difficult to explain but it work with gravity from your own body, stretching your body, like torsion, to alleviate the pain.
I have friends who have not had surgery and they use it every night for 15-30 minutes. Look it up on Google. You can get a cheap one for around £70.00.
It's still too early to say if my surgery has been successful but I feel less pain than before. I will keep you updated.
21 is very young and I sympathize with you because my first episode of back pain was when I was 18.
Have you tried an osteopath? My osteopath helped me for more than 20 years.
Where do you live?

I feel your frustration, to get an appointment with a neurologist seems to take a very long time.

sar2017...I don't know about where you live, but here in Canada one can see an Orthopedic Surgeon or a Neurosurgeon for spinal problems, especially when it comes to surgery. The Neurologist certainly would perform the usual neurological physical testing...bloodwork, & order an MRI then go from there. They always seem to look for nerve impingement but in my mind, when discs are deterioriating, osteophyte formation, etc.etc..there is pain. No two ways about it.

I have just been allocated a cancellation appointment with my allocated Nurosurgeon, little nervous!

sar2017...don't be nervous!!! You likely have thoughts going on in the back of your mind. "What ifs" really don't do us a whole lot of good. Take it from me, I'm the king of 'what-if". However, this is a good thing that you're seeing the Neurosurgeon. He/she is the pro here...& likely will tell you if you need surgery or not. If you don't feel medications are the answer, then say so. To me, when one has been suffering...yes suffering...medications just mask the problem. Be frank with the Neurosurgeon...write down questions before you go. Don't depend on trying to remember them. We all think we know what we want to ask, yet when we get into the office, we forget, then remember when we leave. Don't allow yourself to be 'blewn off" either. You have a right to ask questions, & express how you feel.
