Some pain, some bleeding

I'm 70 yrs old and 12 days since my turp surgery. Spent one night in the hospital with a cath that was removed the next morning before leaving the hospital. At times my urine is almost clear and other times it looks a dark pink. Sometimes a few drops of what looks like blood when finishing up. Most times a burning pain at the begining and end of urniation. No sex yet, haven't tried, haven't wanted to. I still get up frequently during the night and go allot during the day. I think most of that it due to the massive amount of water I drink. Was told to drink lots of water to keep things flushed out, it works. Before turp it was very hard for me to pee at night and if I had been sitting too long, I don't have that problem now and the stream is way better than it was prior to turp. I do tend to drip before and after urination, I do wear protection (depends) so not to soil my clothes. So far I am happy I had the procedure, hope I still feel that way months from now. I see the Doc in 18 days, I hope all is going as it should.

Joe - I want to thank you for starting this blog. It really helped me in preparing for prostate surgery and your experience gave me a "shining light" for what can hopefully be for myself. I had TURP surgery 6 days ago, after suffering from BPH for over 3 years. I took Tamsulosin medication for much of that time, which started affecting my sex life toward the end. Put off making a decision on TURP, mainly because of the potential after effects such as Retro. Things looked okay through last March. A recent rise in B.P. lead to blood tests that showed Acute Urinary Retention which caused by kidneys to start shutting down - a potentially life-threatening situation. Referred by my family doctor to Urologist at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, I was made to understand the severity of the situation. My urologist insisted that I check in the very next day to the Urology ward and have a catheter inserted in order to relieve the pressure on my kidneys. What I initially thought was a weekend of catheter, turned out to be over a month, initially to allow the kidneys to start functionning again (which they did) and then an added delay due to a prostate biopsy, due to high PSA score. Very tough situation that somehow I wound up living with for that time (I guess you can adapt to anything if you have to). I had a relatively large prostate (over 75 grams) which is borderline for TURP, so my urologist did a "combination" operation that combines TUVP (vaporisation) with the standard TURP. The vaporisation is done at the beginning, with the TURP coming afterward. I opted for general anesthesia during the operation, which I feel was the right decision. This seems to be the latest method used in Israel. I was very concerned about pain - but was pleasantly surprised to have very little pain when the anesthesia wore off. Was put on 3 way catheter and kept 3 nights in hospital, being flushed out regularly. Catheter taken out prior to leaving hospital (after check if I was able to pee on my own, which I could). I'm now at home and starting the road back. First two days lots of blood in urine and had a scare yesterday when I though I was blocked up again. However, last night urine started flowing again and a lot less blood. Overall feeling good - I had no leekage whatsoever so far (my wife bought a pack of adult diapers just in case - but haven't had to use them). I was somewhat worried about ED, but signs so far show that this probably won't be a problem. Regarding Retro - I can only hope for results like yours - but certainly don't know yet. By the way, I'm 68 years old, married, and important for a good sex life to continue. Hope my experiences will add to those who have written here before.

I had the surgery cause after over 10 years of not being able to pee, I had enough. Only sleeping a hour at a time at night was getting old. Tryed meds for almost 2 years. They didn't work either and the side effects were terrible. He told me I could live with it if I wanted to. Surgery was my decision. At52 years old I didn't feel trying to Cath myself the rest of my life was anything I wanted to do.

I am thinking, from what y'all have said on her, it may have been button TURP. The place I go uses all the latest equipment. He even told me he uses new stuff so I am thinking that's what he used. Have a list of questions to ask him so I know what was done, how big it was and how much he took out etc.

Hi zev, "Acute Urinary Retention which caused by kidneys to start shutting down ... "
I don't see how this can happen. Usually it is the other way around, urinary retention causing kidney problems. Hank

I believe he meant to write " "Acute Urinary Retention which caused MY kidneys to start shutting down ... ". "m" and "b" are close on the keyboard.

Yes - that's correct. I meant "my" kidneys to start shutting down. Hank you were correct in your assessment. Paul - thanks for clarifying for me.
