Some pain, some bleeding

I'm 70 yrs old and 12 days since my turp surgery.  Spent one night in the hospital with a cath that was removed the next morning before leaving the hospital.   At times my urine is almost clear and other times it looks a dark pink.  Sometimes a few drops of what looks like blood when finishing up.  Most times a burning pain at the begining and end of urniation.  No sex yet, haven't tried, haven't wanted to.  I still get up frequently during the night and go allot during the day.  I think most of that it due to the massive amount of water I drink.  Was told to drink lots of water to keep things flushed out, it works.  Before turp it was very hard for me to pee at night and if I had been sitting too long, I don't have that problem now and the stream is way better than it was prior to turp.  I do tend to drip before and after urination, I do wear protection (depends) so not to soil my clothes.  So far I am happy I had the procedure, hope I still feel that way months from now.  I see the Doc in 18 days, I hope all is going as it should.

Just got back from the uro for my first followup.  He took blood for a psa, 2.5.  I did thank him for doing such a great job and how good it was to get a good nights sleep.  I sleep about five hours now till I need to get up and pee.  Takes about a minute or so till I'm back in bed and back to sleep.  During the day it's about three hours now between trips to the bathroom.  I also have to say that sex is good again, no retro.

Joe, did you ever figure out why you had trouble peeing when awaking up at night but better flow during the day? I have the same symtoms. Ive noticed if I sleep sitting up I pee fine all night. Maybe its because I don't sleep as soundly sitting up IDK

I was like that at first. Then it gradually got so it was tough to pee all the time.

To answer your question my problem was because of an enlarged prostate that would swell a bit more while sleeping and sitting too long.

Before TURP I had a horrable time trying to pee when awaking at night.  Sometimes I wouldn't be able to go at all without walking around the house for 10 minutes or so, then I could trickle out a bit.  I would try and go back to bed getting up to try to pee again within the hour, what a PITA.  Daytime when I was up and about it was some easier but not much.  If I had been sitting watching a movie for an hour or so peeing was next to impossible without standing and / or walking for a period of time.  I was on several different meds at different times that would help at first, after a few months I was back to square one not to mention the ED caused by the meds.  After several test, prostate biopsy, scope and the finger something else had to be done.  My doc and I talked ablut several different procedures and TURP was decided on.  I guess I decided on the TURP procedure was because my uro has done so many with good success now I'm happy I did.  Went to bed last night at 10:30PM.  Got up to pee at 5:15AM and went back to sleep, took all of 15 seconds to empty my bladder.  Got up at 8:00AM for the day and had another good bathroom go.  Have had sex with my wife a few times since turp, everything works as it should.  Shure am happy to be off those meds and happy with my decision.  It may not be for every man, talk it over with your doc.  One more thing, my uro told me that the prostate continues to grow, problem may return in 10 - 15 years.  Heck, I'm 70 yrs old.  If I make it another 10 yrs or so and the problem returns I will consider what is available at that time with TURP at the top of my list.  Good luck to you uncklefester

Hi Joe Thanks for that info. I take it you are satisfied with turp surgery?

at 87 years  i have retention and my URo wanted to do turp? I turned it down,i guess i was afraid to do this. Did your dr do bipolar turp?

How long did the pain last, and how long were you in the hospital?

Thanks  a lot  Joe for this info.

I had TURP done. The only pain was from the Cath. It stretches a bit. Other than that didn't even need pain meds.

Frank, I may be wrong but I think TURP is a more generic term. tTere are many ways tissue can be removed during TURP so be sure to find out how they're removing the tissue. . I was considering HOLEP which seems to have a very fast recovery time low bleeding. I'm now leaning towards a procedure called gocal laser ablation but I have some hurdles to get over if I go that route.

10 weeks post turp and something I did not expect.  Last night for the first time in a several weeks I was up three times peeing.  Most nights I get up only one time, several nights not even once.  Back to last night.  Not only was I up 3x during the night but the third time around 5:00AM I passed two scabs.  I thought I was finished with that.  I don't think anything is wrong, I was just surprised.  Today was a pretty normal day so far.  Since 5 AM I've peed 3 times, that's been pretty much the norm.

That's pretty normal Joe. Pieces will find there way out for a while. I was surprised when that happened to me after months of nothing. Doc said it was normal. The scabs fall off. Another smaller one may form. You don't see the blood cause it's very little. I didn't think I was bleeding at all til I gave a sample at uros. It was orange.
