something feels stuck on tongue, loads of small papillae middle back tongue, yellow coating

Hello,
Please have a look at the picture and tell me if you see something weird going on.
It's now been 3 months of tongue/throat hell.
3 months ago, I started feeling that something was stuck on the back of my tongue. I went to the hospital one week later, they found nothing.
Now for the last 3 months,I keep needing to swallow as I feel stuck is stuck on my tongue.
Along with the feeling of stuff stuck on tongue, I have some dryness back of throat, the need to keep swallowing food as it doesn't go down easily, lost 4 kilos in 1 month (eating properly), extreme tiredness & neck pain (maybe due to the constant swallowing)
I would never try and get a diagnosis from the internet, but I have been seen by many doctors and still waiting for more tests.. maybe someone out there have seen this type of issue before and can help out.
Anyone who has a clue, please let me know.
Thanks,
Tess

Hi,
Just wondering if you have anymore news on this? My tongue looks identical to yours, also started out of the blue one day. First, doctors treated me for oral thrush with no success until one GP connected all my symptoms with this tongue and said it's acid reflux. I'm on 30mg lansoprazole and most of my symptoms have improved including the tongue but not fully. The abck of my tongue still has that coating and feels like something is stuck on it!
Thanks a lot for sharing and looking forward to hearing mroe
Magda

Hi Tess!
My tongue looks exactly like that right now (an ongoing candida infection that doesn't completely go away) - I had a swab done and they found that I had oral candida. It spread to my esophagus and caused infectious esophagitis and esophageal thrush. For 4 weeks, I couldn't eat any solid food and was sensitive to anything aside from water and ensure drinks. Right before I discovered it was oral thrush, I could barely drink water - that's when I had enough and went to the ER (which is how I got on stronger anti-fungal medication). It was the worst month in my life TBH. I also felt like a bunch of liquid pooling on one side of the throat, which went away once on anti-fungal medicine. I was determined to get better. I had lost 10 pounds in 1 month (weighed 98 pounds) and knew I had to get better so I could eat solid food again (I now weigh 106!). So, I researched online some of my symptoms, and noticed my tongue looked weird (it was white at the time, now it's yellow from the medication) and I easily found oral thrush. The doctor took a look and diagnosed it just by the visual (at the time it was white before I got on medication for it). I got a swab for it a day later and it was confirmed to be thrush. Scary thing was that it showed up in a blood test as well. It was so weird that doctors didn't catch it when I went in earlier for issues with swallowing. They caught it when I inquired if that it was. I've currently been on anti-fungal medication since July 25th. The anti-fungal medicine prevents it from getting worse and I can eat almost everything again (although I permanently have damage on one side with swallowing due to the shazki ring that formed from the esophagitis which required dilation). I knew it was the candida infection causing my issues when I could eat solid food again not right after the dilation, but after I got on anti-fungal medication that worked enough to allow me to eat like a normal person again. Candida is no joke - I can't believe there is not more research into it. I am going to see an infectious disease specialist for fungal infections since mine hasn't gone away fully despite the thrush treatment (just maintains it/prevents from getting worse which allows me to function at least).

Any updates on your condition/diagnosis? My tongue and throat look identical to yours. I've had this problem for three years. I had no idea what it could be, and then Covid happened, so I waited to see a doctor. I went to urgent care and they had no idea what it was. I don't have a primary doctor because my insurance is crap. They gave me antibiotics which took the pain away in my throat for a little while, but it came back. I changed my diet. Cut out sugar, bread, and yeast. After being on that diet for a year, there was no change in my symptoms. My throat still hurt. It was so, so painful, and not just when I swallowed, but all the time. I talked to a Teledoctor and they gave me Nystatin for five days. I swished and swallowed. It didn't help at all. I went to urgent care again and I saw a different doctor there. Still, they had no idea what it was, and suggested it could be allergies. I'm not sure where to go from here. Nothing I do seems to matter, it just won't go away.
