      Hello there,

I'm pain free now but it lasted over 3 months?

I went on a post nazel drip med. It seemed to do the trick.

      Good luck

Hello! Thank you for your post. I'm curious what post nasal drip mess you are on. Could you tell me? Is it still helping you?

      Thanks!

I've been suffering from something very similar for over 3 years. I've had my tonsils out, a reflux operation called a Fundoplication, and a septoplasty/turbonate reduction surgery, and none of those have eased the chronic throat pain.

    Does anyone have any advice?

Eman06971, it's so sad to here that... I'm suffering of chronic sore throat for almost 2 yeats now, had been in more than 4 GI and ENT especialists in Brazil, had been scoped twice and done 24 hour phimpedancemetry, which showed the presence of GERD, but couldn't tell if that is the cause of my main sympthom: sore throat. My GI especialist is now trying a different PPI and if that doesn't clear up the soreness, he sad that we will perform a second phimpedancemetry, this time on PPI, and than probably recommend surgery intervention (nissen fundoaplication). I confess that reading that you didn't get better even after that makes me desperate.

I've been dealing with sore throats now since I was in 6 years old, I'm now 34. 3-4 good months and the other are bad, antibiotics have hepled through out the years, but 2015 has been very unforgiving non-stop sore throats. I still have my tonsils, which might be the next step. But what I have noticed over the years is that cold temps and certain foods/spicies trigger my throat to flare up. I live in Florida and when I lived alone I had my AC off and had a fan belowing from the chest down, which greatly reduced my flare ups, humidity and no direct air blowing on my face is key for me. I now have a 3 year old, so that's definately something that could be causing it, plus the wife sleeps with the ac on 77 degrees. I have to sleep with towel or shirt over my face for relief.

Date:  02/25/2017  I seem to have some of your same problems (don55005).  The least little bit of air (cold or hot) blowing around in my bedroom at night makes things so much worse on my sinus and sore throat.  I have sinus drainage that goes down my throat causing a sore throat and I'm having problems controling it.  At night even when I don't notice sinus drainage, the next morning I have a sore throat.  Listed are some of the things that I am doing.

Take 1/3 pill of Zyrtec 3 times a day.  If take too much at one time it gives me a headache.  (Physcian Assistant also told me you can get "Re-Bound" if you use Zyrtec more than 3 to 5 days so this might be some of my problem.)

Use a chin strap when sleeping which might help you keep your mouth closed so your are not breathing air into your mouth (also might prevent snoring).

Sleep with your head elevated.  Either get you a wedge pillow or elevate your mattress head.

Re-direct your ceiling vents so the air doesn't blow on you at night.  They have plastic things with magnets (at Lowes) you can buy to re-direct the air.  If you can, just shut the vent down.

The more important thing that I have been doing is.  At night take the lightweight microfiber sheet and either cover your head partically letting in just a little air, or better yet, cover your entire head and sleep all night that way.

This last year I can't seem to get rid of my reaccuring sore throat and I've started having acid reflux on a daily basis so I'll be looking at some of these other suggestions to see if they give any relief.

      Thanks everyone for posting here.

This advice is based on my own personal experience. Take this advice at your own risk.

You must consult your doctor. Do not self medicate.

Sore throat is normally caused initially by a virus infection but subsequently becomes a bacteria infection. It can be caused by insufficient sleep or eating spicy food like food laced with chillies, jalapeno or food added with too much pepper, curry, oily fried food or drinking soup with oil droplets in them. It can also be caused by inhaling dust particles from haze or even from persistent stress at work or infection from other people.

On the initial onset of throat infection, try gurgling with salt water or listerine by

looking up at the ceiling while gurgling to dislodge any oil droplets attached to  your throat. Do not swallow the salt or listerine solution. It is meant to be spitted out after gurgling.

If this does not work, take a tablet of 1000mg dosage Redoxon vitamin C by dropping it in a glass of water. Wait for the efferversence to complete before drinking it. This is generally effective for sore throat caused by insufficient sleep and not by bacteria infection. Please note that you can only take this once a while. Never take excessive vitamin C of this high dosage daily, otherwise you may develop kidney stones.

It is better to drink lemon drink often to boost up your vitamin C requirement as it

also helps to prevent kidney stone formation. If that still does not work, take lozenges. It only works if your sore throat is not severe. Otherwise, it is ineffective. Taking too much lozenges or for prolonged period is also not good for your kidney function.

Doctors normally prescribe antibiotics to a patient when he or she is suffering from a fever or swollen tonsils or the throat becomes very reddish.

The antibiotics prescribed are normally either:

    ampicillin or

    amoxycillin or amoxicillin or

    augmentin (amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium)

    Dosage for Ampicillin or amoxycillin:

Adult dosage: 250 mg per capsule, normally taken 2 capsules at one time.

Child dosage: 125 mg per 5 ml or 7.5 ml in liquid form depending on age and body weight.

Baby or toddler dosage: unknown or could be 50 mg per 5 ml (check with your doctor)

Ampicillin or amoxycillin is normally taken thrice a day for a period of 5 consecutive days.

Augmentin comes in 650 mg dosage and is normally taken twice a day for a period of 5 consecutive days.

In terms of strength of the medicine, augmentin is the strongest, followed by

amoxycillin and then ampicillin. These medicines are normally obtained through

prescription only. However, for some countries, you can buy them over the counter from pharmacies.

For other countries, they may be controlled and can only be bought with a doctor's prescription. The objective is to prevent abuse of medication or to prevent new strains of bacteria from developing resistance to them if misuse.

You have to complete the course of medication and do not stop taking them until you finish the course of antibiotics in 5 consecutive days otherwise any surviving bacteria will build resistance to the drug.

Normally paracetamol (panadol) and serrazyme (topal) are prescribed together to lower the fever and reduce the swelling of the throat respectively. If your sore throat causes dry cough later, doctor may prescribe dhasedyl cough syrup for you too. Dhasedyl cough syrup may cause drowsiness or sleepiness. Please do not take this cough syrup if you are driving or manning some factory machineries as you may doze off and endangers your life.

You must have enough sleep and drink enough water. Eat enough fruits daily.

Your medication will not work if you do not have enough sleep or you do not drink enough water daily. Avoid oily, fried, spicy food like curry, jalapeno or chillies. Do not take the medicine and Vitamin C or fruit juice concurrently as the vitamin C or fruit juice will dilute the effectiveness of the medicine. The medicine is generally alkaline in nature while the fruit juice or vitamin C is acidic. Both when combined will neutralize each other to some extent, thereby nullifying the effectiveness of the medication.

How to prevent sore throat from recurring:

Take vitamin C e.g. Redoxon every 2 or 3 days once. Dosage depends on age e.g. 250 mg for adults and 100mg for children. Do not take excessive of it.

Have enough sleep. Drink 7 to 8 glasses of water a day, spreading them out.

Drink fruit juice every other day .e.g lemon or other fruit juice if you do not wish to take vitamin C. It is in fact a better and healthier option. You can buy concentrated fruit juice. Then dissolve it with water in a glass. In that way, it is more economical.

Remember no amount of medicine can cure your sore throat if you do not have enough sleep or water.

And lastly, do not abuse antibiotics.

From my diagnosis of what you say about your symptoms, it looks like you are lacking in vitamin C. Drink fruit juice daily but not excessively or take vitamin C every other day. Hope this helps.

I think, for such a long time, the only real cause can be some sort of reflux. I have LPR, laryngopharyngeal reflux for four years. No virus, no bacteria. Just 24\7 365 inflammed, red throat and difficulty breathing.

This condition is hard to diagnose and even harder to treat, cause docs seem to be so unaware.

This is really interesting. I have been suffering from recurring poor health ever since I had my son (3 & a half years ago). I seem to catch everything and never fully get rid of it. Mainly colds/flu but also recurring coughs and sore throat. Currently I have such a sore throat can hardly swallow. Been to GP who told me just to "ride it out!". Ive been constantly choking for a week now and cant keep food or liquid down and have had very little sleep. After insisting the GP is going to do bloods but done this last year and found nothing wrong - again like others implying that it in my head. One GP actually put me on antidepressants for these recurring coughs and colds!

I have a small cut inside my ear, its been there for over 2 years and have been wondering if this has anything to do with my sore throats as it is mainly this side of my throat that hurts most. Also my ear is really sore at the moment too - can't lie on it to sleep.

    Any help gratefully appreciated

It is very likely from symptoms you mentioned, you suffer from LPR, a form of GERD. It is difficult to diagnose and probably even more difficult to treat.
    • Posted

Hiya! I would persuade your GP send you to see an ENT doc.

      Blessings

    • Posted

I was diagnosed with LPR by an ENT today was told to take antiacid once a day and elevate the head of my bed at night. Were you diagnosed with LPR and have you improved.
    • Posted

Elevating the head helps only in classical GERD, symptoms of LPR occur during the day, no matter in what position your body, neck is. In fact, people with lpr have the most problems while sitting, it might be due to pressure on stomach.

Antiacid might be totally wrong for this condition, the excactly opposite of what you should take. In more than 90% the problem is low stomach acid and poor digestive enzyme production.

    • Posted

And no, i havent improved yet. I just found that out what i told you months ago. I didnt even get diagnose and i lost too many years with this miserable condition.

I ordered probiotics and hcl with pepsin.

I only got probiotics, hcl lost somewhere shipping?!

Probiotics fight bad bacterias that cause lack of stomach acid. If there is not enough acid, esophageal sphincter doesnt work properly and read it as there is no acid, so thats why it doesnt close and let this low acid to all your ent areas.

I am not a doctor, but i made a reasearch on my own, since all my docs were useless.

Thanks for the reply.I am buying the Probiotics and the Digestive Enzymes today will try the local CVS store.
